Hi all welcome back to another video Dereck Reacts back at it again! This time around we take a look at another New Order reaction made possible via PATREON with "The Perfect Kiss." New Order brings on the heat with this super synthy track. Although the vocal execution isn't sully there, the song makes up for the blunder with it's powerhouse sounds. See my reaction now!

I think Bernard's singing is supposed to reflect apathy and anti-social influences. Most of his singing tends to be similar. It's his style. And I love it. Great song, the 12" extended mix, as with all New Order songs, is incredible!

The weakest part of the band imo

Remember that the band’s original singer left this world at the age of 23 so they had to decide among the remaining members who would take over the vocals as they renamed themselves New Order from Joy Division. Bernard was a reluctant singer who took several years to find his style and gain confidence in his singing- by the time of Low Life he was improving but he was still inconsistent as a vocalist. By the time their next album Brotherhood came out he had worked it out and was more relaxed and confident in his vocal delivery. Still, I like the tension in his voice on this album, especially on Love Vigilates and Face Up and I think it suits the mood of the album. What is clear is that he is not a conventional, trained vocalist and he had to work it out himself.

For me, their best song, SUBLIME INSTRUMENTATION, INCREDIBLE BUILD UP, just... PERFECT... But about this version, I think the best is from the Substance album, a very must

This extended mix is a masterpiece, it's a journey... that is their best work, in my opinion. This version seems cut up and incomplete, but it' still a good listen. True Faith is also a close second.

Unfortunately, you have reviewed the US version of the vídeo that was shot live and is 10 min long. This version was shortened for MTV in US. For a live take, it is really a bummer. They did that live take because they did not want to mime in videos and, as the received pressure to appear on video, they said they would do it only if it was a live performance in studio. A piece of history!

Bernard was originally just on guitar but stepped up to singing after New Order reinvented themselves when Joy Division's singer Ian Curtis killed himself. He did later take singing lessons ;)

One of my favourite bands of all time - and I agree with Dereck 100%. Bernard was never a good singer, but what New Order do amazingly well is layer their sound with infectious melodies that are perfect for the dancefloor.

Derek, I've been a New Order fan since 1985, and I agree with you completely. This is one of my favorites musically, but they really should have given Bernard Summer some more takes to sing the lead vocal better. As most people know, Bernard was a guitar player in the background during the Joy Division days, until Ian Curtis's untimely passing forced Bernard to front the band. To his credit, he has since developed greatly as a singer, but in '85, he was a little off-key, and that was way before Autotune existed. Despite the issues with the lead vocal, "Perfect Kiss" is still one of this New Order fan's favorites.

New Order - ground breaking. One reason - for many songs the bass player becomes the lead guitar for many of their riffs. The first to do it. Bernards singing is like that on purpose - flat, monotone - melancholy.

Remember that this was 1985 and it was at the dawn of digital synthesisers and samplers. This was a groundbreaking piece when it was released and it absolutely blew my mind and those of my friends when we first heard it in high school. It ranks as an important step in synthesiser music hitting the mainstream with their next major single Bizarre Love Triangle blowing them up right around the world. This was only a modest hit at the time but it came out around the same time as other important ’80’s synth albums such as Jean Michel Jarre’s Zoolook, Kraftwerk’s Electric Cafe and Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark’s Crush. It was very innovative at the time and nothing else had really sounded like it before. Almost 40 years later it still holds up well when a lot of the more popular songs of the time have dated badly.

MORE NEW ORDER!! The unique guitaring in New Order is not spoken of enough = totally underrated. I know them INSTANTLY by the sound of the guitar. A modern band called Cut Copy uses the same guitar rift/style and was one of the first "Next Wave" or "Synth Wave" modern bands to introduce me to that modern interpretation of New Wave.

Bernard's vocals today would be totally squashed , quantized and re-tuned to death. And nobody would ever have a chance to hear what the band really sounded like. . In the 80's, a band with a DIY approach could make it to the charts, provided the song was good enough.

I've been listening to the 12" version of this song forever and had no clue this one even existed... wish it was still that way. What a way to ruin this amazing song, that. Still a great reaction from Dereck, hope you get around to listening to the 12in at some point!

He is not a great singer, but yes he is almost always lead as far as I know. I still prefer to hear a real live vocal than an electronically manipulated, processed voice, and we very rarely get that anymore.

Ha!! I knew you were going to say that Derek! Bernard’s voice is not that good, especially on the early years, but that’s what makes these songs unique and special, without that voice it wouldn’t be New Order. It is part of the post punk attitude, they didn’t care about a perfect voice or even a perfect live performance, that’s what makes it real, not like these days.

Bernard is not the best singer. This version is a bit different than the album track on Lowlife. I actually prefer that one, but i'd shake it at the club if this came on.

Hello *Dereck,* It was very advanced musically, but the singer sang really out of tune! 😅 It starts with a hip-hop rhythm and then switches to a surprising electropop rhythm. The keyboard clusters are pretty spectacular, with constant changes. I bought the extended version when it came out. Fortunately, the studio recording made the vocals sound more pleasant and in tune. Peace, folks. ☮😉
