Martha Graham the world famous dancer said “a dancer does twice the first when they stop dancing the first death is the most painful”. This idea of no longer being able to make your art is a quote they included in the official art version of the song. We all need more Jimin . His dancing is unmatched in kpop. It’s got that fluidity of contemporary but with the strength of his martial arts background. Plus he’s so soft and empathetic the caring one worrying endlessly about his members and Army. We have had so many messages from him about “stay warm don’t get sick”. Shout out to whoever decided to put Jimin and Jungkook into black leather corsets.

basically the song is abt burnout, they've been experiencing it on and off after their biggest international breakthrough up to that point towards the end of 2017 not all of the members and def. not all at the same time, but they have said so (it's mentioned also in the Beyond the story book). Understandably it scares them! they've been very open with us abt it.

There is a very popular quote in the fandom for this MV "A dancer dies twice, once when they stop dancing, and this first death is the more painful." by Martha Graham, a famous dancer of 19th century. If they loose their passion for music, it'll be more painful than their death which was what Suga's and RM's first verse was about.
@Mark-vj7zd
@Mark-vj7zd 4 ай бұрын
20th century, not 19th. She died just over 30 years ago and was hugely important in the development of the style of dancing that Jimin trained in. When you watch Jimin or Taemin dance, you’re looking at her influence, which makes Black Swan all the more poignant.

This is the MV that yanked me down the rabbit hole. I worked in theatre for years and there is something so special about a bare theatre to me. And the lighting! They actually had someone who knew how to light dancers. And a “boy band” doing contemporary choreo? Who were these guys willing to do an MV like this? My mind was blown. And then I was done for. I have a whole theory about the progression of the shadows in the MV. At the end, I took it as JK finally accepting his shadow as a part of him - the only way to self realization. One thing that I try to keep in mind is that MOTS 7 was supposed to be the last album before they took their break before enlistment. This song breaks my heart in a lot of ways. There is a behind video of Jimin’s solo shoot. You’ll love it. So much of his work didn’t actually make it in. I was so looking forward to your reaction. You loved and appreciated it even more than I thought you would. I really enjoyed watching you watch this for the first time.

Things to note: The MV was filmed at the Los Angeles Theater in L.A. California. The constricted sound production on the vocals is almost like they are singing underwater. Lyrics reference being on the ocean floor, meaning in the dark and under pressure and also talk about their feet being stuck in a rut. There is even the foot dragging dance Jimin does. This all references them feeling like they are stuck in the dark and under pressure. The corsets on Jimin and Jungkook are also a reference to feeling constricted and under pressure. Also notice how when they start, they are on stage in the darkness with a large space of darkness above them, as if they are on the floor of a black ocean. They also do multiple swan-like moves, referencing the title theme. The film Black Swan is about the dangerous line between passion for your art and obsession and perfectionism that eats you up. But a Black Swan as a concept means something unexpected and sudden, an unpredictable event that has severe or life changing consequences, which would be the case for a burnout that leads to writer's block and a loss of love for their art. Both meanings apply. Being barefoot is in keeping with the contemporary style of the choreography, but it also has the effect of making them seem more vulnerable, naked in a sense. Jimin dances with a chaotic abandon on a dark stage and collapses in despair and exhaustion at the end. The shadows represent their fears, which are large, looming and animated, seeming not under their control. Even Jin's reflections do not turn with him, being not under his control. Their clothing goes from white to black as they embrace the shadows and accept their fears. The shadows grow smaller and less animated, more under their control. Yoongi touches his shadow and says "I see myself." At the end, Jungkook's shadow folds in and disappears and he carries it out with him. BTS got far bigger than anyone could have imagined, and they had no idea how to navigate it all and no one to turn to for advice and support. No one in S Korea has ever had their kind of success. Few people in the world history could have even related. Perhaps the Beatles. Michael Jackson. There was just no one for them to lean on. They had to figure it all out on their own and they were so young. Their pace of work from their trainee days until Map of the Soul was just relentless and breakneck. By that time they had 17 albums as a group, 4 solo albums among the rap line, many OSTs, collabs and singles, tours, shows, their variety shows and specials and just endless work. They almost never took breaks and they pushed themselves so hard. By 2017 they were struggling under the crushing weight of it all and they almost didn't make it through, discussing breaking up at that time. But they leaned on each other for support and got through that crisis only to find themselves so exhausted they were losing their inspiration for their art and it started to be painful to try to squeeze out more music. Wringing blood from a stone. Still, they prepared a world tour and worked so hard on their performances for Map of the Soul, only to have the pandemic crash down on their heads and bring a whole new kind of suffering as they realized how much they loved touring and concerts and being with ARMY, and tried to understand who they were without it all. This MV and ON: Kinetic Manifesto were filmed in L.A. just before the pandemic hit. Their crisis in 2017-2018 of almost breaking up brought some heart wrenching and stunning music out of their experiences, and this legendary MAMA acceptance speech where, true to their honest and open relationship with ARMY, they shared their feelings and the crisis they had just passed through. (Have tissues ready) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rLyjapRhx67PfnU.html The next year, 2019, was the one where they were the first group ever to sweep all the grand prizes at both the MMAs and the MAMAs.

Since their art is open for interpretations. I'll tell mine : The first I noticed about this MV are the plucked strings sounds at the beginning and each pluck their hands move as if being controlled & they are in a center stage of theatre which reminds me of puppeteering. And the first lines are 'Do your thang' as if it's already expected of them what to do. This makes me think that they feel as if their passion which is creating & performing their songs becomes like a job for them & something they have to do instead of want to do. Since this song is supposed to be in Map of the Soul:Shadow Album which in Carl Jung's term is your dark conciousness, such as fear. This is literally saying their greatest fear is when their hearts no longer vibrates for their music. Like while performing they could no longer feel fear of messing up nor the enjoyment, it's like numbness to what they do. So that would be their first death, losing their passion. Which is more painful than the actual death is when u no longer feel alive. Multiple songs of theirs already talked about the shadow. They compare it with the amount of lights they receive. The more famous, the more blinding the lights are at them & the bigger their shadows become. They are actually afraid of their fame, if you look at their story they didn't expect the fame they got and often feel overwhelmed by it. The higher they got the higher they could fall. But this song actually ended on a positive note though, in jhope's verse he was in trance but decided to just face his deepest fear & that's where he found himself that why they'll never gonna go back that down again. That's why at the end of the MV the shadow disappeared because they faces themselves.

Hi Lory, Black swan is the most beautiful music video I can think of but in close competition with Blood Sweat and Tears. Which I highly recommend. Jimin is my bias so I totally agree with you that he is the best dancer, his movements flow like silk and even when doing hip hop choreo he moves are always a little different, extra accentuated. It's just beautiful to watch. And then his voice completes his allure of heavenly grace. I love him.

The lyrics to this song are probably due to RM who is a great reader and intellectual. The MV is inspired by the movie Black Swan and the lyrics are based on thoughts expressed by a famous dancer, that a dancer dies twice, the first time being when they can no longer dance. The guys were feeling overworked and depressesd at that time and feared losing their love for performance etc.

This song hits different after they said in their recent documentary that they were supposed to go on a break/do their military service in 2020 after their world tour. Ofc the pandemic happened and plans changed, so they went in 2022/23 instead. With that context I interpret the song as one of the last ones before they were supposed to go on break, and therefore questioning their purpose and the fear of losing passion for music. Black swan is part of the album Map of the soul: 7, and one of the main theme is shadows within our selves (as seen dancing in the mv). I highly recommend watching the mv for 'interlude: shadow' by suga, its in the same album and has similar themes to black swan, that there is always a shadow following us. 'ON' is the title track for the album, i also recommend that song. :) +freaking out about jins long hair in the live performance 😩😍

Hi I am back. Good reaction, ty. This one has beautiful deep meaning of their lyrics. As you notice like lines " It would be my first death. That's what I'm afraid of ." It has that emotional theme of an artist fear for losing their passion for what they do. With this song BTS dives deep into their inner selves as artists and faces the shadows they had once hidden. The song lends voice to their fears that one day music will no longer be able to move or touch them. The very moment they come face to face with the ‘Black Swan’ within themselves, however, they are stricken with a paradoxical realization that music is all they have. It is a confession of an artist who has truly learned what music means to himself. It's also inspired from Martha Graham, who said “A dancer dies twice once when they stop dancing, and this first death is more painful.” With the band on a break from group work and focusing more on solo projects (solo albums). We know this was also a hint to us that they were struggling. I hope u watch all the performances for this song. =0] Stay safe. - 2019 ARMY NY USA 💜 Jen W said on 6/7/22 Black Swan ballet: changing from white to black swan - growing up, losing innocence. Black Swan movie - sacrificing mental and physical health to reach the top. Shadow/mirror images - self reflection. Black Swan: Mainly written by RM, the one you like, is about their fears of losing all passion for music, either writing it or performing on stage. It's also based on a quote by Martha Graham who was an important figure in the world of modern dance, "A dancer dies twice. Once when they stop dancing and this death is more painful." They've been doing this for a long time now and for some of them it's all they've ever done from a young age but realized music is their life. MsBeatrice_81 said on 3/19/22 Fun fact: Before BTS began doing it, it wasn't normal at all for Korean idol groups to release songs with deeper meanings, discuss serious topics in their songs, acknowledge issues of vulnerability like burnout, depression or mental illness. It wasn't normal for idols to open up about their personal troubles at all. In fact, doing so got some idols thrown out of their companies. It was also not normal or common to have a running storyline/theme that is carried through multiple albums and/or MVs and songs. But BTS did it all so successfully, and broke those stigmas, to the point that now many other Korean idol groups have started trying to do those things, with varying degrees of sincerity and success. This song, its lyrics and MV are part of the "Shadow" portion of BTS's Map of the Soul era, in which they released albums and songs based on Carl Jung's theories regarding the Persona, Shadow, and Ego. This track is an exploration of their "shadow" selves' fear that they may someday lose their passion for their art - they ask if perhaps they are already losing it- and they wonder what comes after that "first death" of the loss of passion. In the end, they continue to fight for their passion and their art, claiming they won't be swept away by these fears again. I would encourage you to think about how counter-cultural BTS is being in songs like this: Not only are they dealing with topics that were taboo only a few years ago, but they're being unbelievably personally vulnerable, sincere and open. Lory, you just *have* to watch the stage performance of Black Swan from their Permission To Dance concerts. It's very different from the usual choreography and omg it's SO stunning! Also, at the MMA 2020 they performed a dance version *in water!* It's incredibly beautiful. The first taste we got of Black Swan was actually an art film that they released ahead of the MV where a Slovenian dance company performs a gorgeous contemporary dance version of the song with a different musical arrangement. Definitely not the standard for K-pop but then again neither is BTS. 😂 Regarding the shadow... If you notice in the beginning of the MV the shadow is huge and domineering above them but as they face the shadow they become of equal size (Suga's scene) and in the end Jungkook accepts that it will always be a part of him but now he knows how to balance it out and you see the shadow shrink and become one with him. The entire Map Of The Soul album is an absolute masterpiece centered around Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung's Map Of The Soul personality model which includes the persona, the shadow and the ego. Persona by RM, Shadow by Suga and Ego by J-Hope are also a trilogy of songs by the rap line on the album (you've already heard Persona in the MMA 2019 performance but there's an MV as well). It's a really fascinating and well thought out concept for an album. 💜

Having looked through the comments i think almost everything has been said already. I am sorry i am so late to your most recent reactions. Work took over for a bit, but I am catching up today. I would only add the following: They are seen in white outfits with just a hint of the shadow on them when viewed from the audience's point of view on stage. They are showing their persona. When they are in black clothing, they are behind the scenes or looking out at the audience. From this point of view they are conveying their shadow, their fears that they sing about. In this instance, they are singing about their fear of losing passion for their art, and they fear this "first death" as it will be more painful than their actual physical death. Great reaction, loving your videos 💜

Black Swan ilustra a morte como uma etapa da vida, como o fim de um ciclo. Como se algo que se tornou ruim, morresse, para que o que ficou de bom pudesse renascer de forma mais brilhante e intensa. "My heart no longer accelerates when I hear the music play, It's trying to stop, it's like time has stopped, oh This would be my first death, which I was always afraid of.” Nesse trecho a seguir: "Deeper Yes, I think I'm going deeper I keep losing focus No, let me go Let my own feet guide me I will dive into myself In my deepest interior”...aqui o BTS nos mostra que é necessário ficar vulnerável, estar disposto a mergulhar para acessar e trabalhar em seu autoconhecimento.

I feel like the other guys can dance well, but Jimin just is so expressive in his dance and he just embodies whatever emotion they are trying to convey. He moves in a way that the others try to but can’t convey. They are all great dancers but there’s just something about Jimin. You can’t reproduce that type of talent and stage presence. He is an amazing dancer and I also love his voice. It’s so unique but amazing.

Been watching your vids since yesterday. I just want to tell you that you are very beautiful. Your make-up is so on point and I absolutely love your eyes! Bangtan really gives the best performances, their story telling is insane. You will feel, hear and see the song and the message they're conveying. I think this is also what elevates them from other performers. They don't just perform but instead take you on a journey with them. You experience their sadness, happiness, angst and whatever emotion they have on their songs. I'm subbing and Borahae!

@@lorydannagr That's why I'm sooo in love with their songs. Yeah they've got a few songs that aren't really great but that's a few from their huge discography. As you dive deeper, I'm sure you'll understand more why Armys so huge and made up of people from all sectors. You'll get to see why professors use BTS as examples in lectures and even make their works inspiration for papers etc. Enjoying your reaction. You can talk about their lyrics if you want to. love your reactions blackswan is the bts song that i heard a while back before knowing them at the time i was a blink (blackpink fan) so i had no interest in them and i actually hated them just because they where number 1 and BP where number 2 i thought they were overrated a year later (in the summer of 2021) i was at my aunt house and she was playing some bts music and i found out she was Army (not gonna lie i was pissed off) but i said nothing i tried to tell her that their music isn't that good (at the time i only heard blackswan/dynamite/butter i have to admit i did not give them a proper listen cuz i was against them for no valid reason now i hate myself thinking about it ) and she told me that she loves their music (btw she was 43 year old) and even shown me their PTD music video i told her that the song was fine but not the best so she left the room without saying a thing ( i don't blame her) but one thing stayed in my mind when she showed me the mv is Jimin (guys i am not joking i am telling you a true story ) at the time i did not know his name when i went home i watched reactions to the mv just to hear someone say his name then i fell in love with him watched every content related to him (i was a solo stan at that moment) a few weeks later i discovered the other members and became a huge army (and as you can tell also a jimin bias) if you read the whole comment thanks for taking the time to hear the story of me becoming an army hhh💜💜💜💜

For me was similar. I was hearing Butter everywhere. I started hating the song. It’s not my cup of tea. 🙈 So I though all BTS songs are similar to Butter, so I said it’s pointless. I did not hate them at any point, even though Stray Kids kept loosing to them. I respected them for their work and Stray Kids were looking up to them, so it must me a reason why.

@@lorydannagr I want to say something about Butter. Some people think BTS's English songs (dynamite, butter and PTD) are simple, but that's not entirely true. Yes, they do not have double meanings and deep lyricism, in which BTS is strongest, these songs were created simply for positive emotions, for an attempt to perform at the Grammys, just to bring lightness and joy. BTS suffered a lot of unfair hate because of these songs, despite the fact that they have a huge discography of masterpieces. For many, it was as if their entire career had been erased and reduced to just these songs. Their secret is that it’s BTS who make them hits, I’m sure no one else could do it like that. Few people even dare to cover them in K-pop, because the songs performed by Bangtan only seem simple. Yes, they can be sung, but their charm only shows when BTS does it. This is my view. By the way, sometimes a live performance makes you look at a song differently. Of course, the most legendary performance with Butter was at the Grammys, it was included in the list of the best performances there of all time according to the Rolling Stones. Jimmy Felon also seems to have a great performance, although I may be wrong about the show's title. I understand that the song is not your style, but I think this will allow you to look at it differently. Their energy in it is amazing and very positive)))). I wrote through a translator, sorry if there are mistakes and thanks, if you read this stream of thoughts to the end)))). I'm glad that you decided to open this wonderful world of Bangtan, they are the most incredible artists I've ever seen in my life.

@lorydannagr In my mind, I think of the two groups like this: BTS are like the Beatles and Stray Kids are like The Rolling Stones. Two very different bands and type of music but both are very good. It's just a preference for some. I'm an ARMY stan but can appreciate the talents of other bands. SKZ music catalog just isn't quite to my taste, but that doesn't mean they're 'bad'. And many many people like both groups.
