This one had me smiling the whole time. Today was my first time hearing David Gates and the band Bread. Not only are his vocals silky smooth, but the song "Make It with You" is such an endearing piece.

I grew up listening to the soft rock music of Bread in the 70's & had their albums. Love David Gates voice. He has one of the most soothing & mellow voices. They had so many hits such as "If", "Everything I Own", "Baby I'm-a Want You", "Diary", "Lost Without Your Love", "It Don't Matter To Me", "The Guitar Man", "Sweet Surrender" & "Aubrey". In 1978, Gates enjoyed success as a solo artist with the hit singles "Goodbye Girl" (from the movie The Goodbye Girl) & "Took The Last Train".

For most of my life, I've been attracted to music just off the beaten path...I prefer Waits to Dylan, The Misfits to The Clash, Bauhaus to The Smiths, and Tool to just about everything else. But Bread is an exception. The songwriting is so spot-on, the message so clear in a genre like easy listening, where so much is lost in the muck. Imagine in your mind an eighteen year old kid sharing a trailer off campus his freshman year of college (1989), and imagine music blaring out of that trailer, songs by Danzig, Slayer, The Cure, Depeche Mode, The Violent Femmes,...and Bread. Love these songs...

Larry Knechtel was an amazing multi instrumentalist who arranged and played the piano on Bridge Over Trouble Waters. Bread also had James Griffin as the other guitarist/vocalist/songwriter. David Gates mom is from Lyman, Wyoming. After his mom and dad married, Clarence Gates, moved his family back east so David's dad could teach music at the college level. They eventually settled in Oklahoma. David's maternal Rollins family come from Western cattle ranching and farming scratching out a living in the Bridger range of Wyoming... David's uncles and aunts were wonderful singers many moved into the professional college and sciences. I recall attending Rollins family reunions where they would gather around the piano and was so impressed and can still hear the rich tenors, baritones and sopranos and full voices of my great aunts and uncles singing together. It was a blast to attend Bread concerts in the 1970's. David's generation is fast slipping to the other side of life. David is the youngest of that generation. David and Jo Rita's children are very well grounded despite their Dad's hard fought eventual success in music. His children reside in the greater California area working in law, medicine and business. David and Jo Rita, now retired reside in the Pacific North West. I'm blessed to be an extended cousin and family member..

Yes, he hails from Tulsa, Oklahoma and is an incredibly likable and humble guy. This is a live version (no lip synch) that's very faithful to the album version. This song always brings me back to waiting for a flight at Honolulu International Airport back in the 70s. It was one of my earliest memories of seeing my parents in bellbottom jeans, lol.

Thanks for the video. I also like Gates’ GOODBYE GIRL. Bread’s songs AUBREY, IF, DIARY & LOST WITHOUT YOUR LOVE are also beautiful.

BREAD has been a part of my wife and I's life. Played their 'IF' at our wedding 49 years ago. Saw the Bread tribute band last nite called 'Toast'... yes really. Thanx for reviewing... wonderful... nice to hear / see someone knowledgeable react with goosebumps like we do.

His voice SHIMMERS at just the right moments, and he can hold and let go-control and release-to create the maximum meaning. There’s almost no separation between the words and the music-perhaps the very definition of a great song sung beautifully.

Thanks for doing one from Bread. David Gates is from right here in Tulsa. That's why I love their music so much-- they played so much of it on the radio here back in the day. You're right, his voice is very intact and smooth, I always thought like silk. You should also try 'If' and 'Diary', and you MUST listen to 'Aubrey'!! Oh-- and 'Guitar Man' too.

Your reactions were priceless! I had similar reactions when I heard these songs for the first time back in the 1970s.
