Thanks for a very good reaction. You have a great capacity for empathy, because you resonated with the deep emotions that were the source of this work of art, even without having documented yourself beforehand. Yes, it's about depression and suicide, and finally the support of the family, which helped him move on. New subscriber here, because you have decided to continue the journey of discovery of Nightwish. I hope you will continue. Greetings from Romania!

I have read where other people touched upon what inspired Tuomas write this song. When the band lost Tarja their first vocalist, it was very public. Even the President of Finland was commenting on it. Tuomas was very depressed over what was happening, and started to think about suicide. His parents is what saved him. The end of the song represents his parents giving him the love and support that he needed.

Impressive how ,without knowing the backstory of this song, you managed to grasp the most important themes of the song. The first part of the song was not Floor singing by the way, but rather a boy soprano (recorded).

@@SarahDengler Apparently when the band first spoke about doing this song live with Floor, she said that she was happy to sing all the treble parts (technical term for boy sopranos) if needed. Tuomas thought about it but felt that it needed some of the treble parts left in for the emotion of the song.

Great reaction, you caught the essence of the song quickly. I cry almost every time I listen to this song. The journey through depression and suicidal ideation is so well done by Tuomas not only in the lyrics but also the music itself. Floor puts so much emotion in her singing. Her "ah's" at the end reminds me of a mother who has sung a lullaby and is quietly moving away, her child feeling loved and now asleep.

When I heard this first, I knew little about the band (just names) and nothing about the history of this song. I listened three or two times in a row, then found lyrics and listened several times more. After that I walked for many days trying to answer the question whether it is appropriate to be so open about ones feelings ... And then I learned the history. Not that it changed my opinion that song is a masterpiece.

What a wonderful reaction. Considering you didn't know the back story you picked up almost everything. There seem to be a large number of Nightwish fans who have been helped through depression by the band and there are many factors in that. For me, two of the big ones are 1. the love these band members have for each other (both Marko and Emppu go over to Tuomas for moral support at points and both together at the end; while Floor waits several seconds looking across to check on Tuomas before she says her usual humble" thank you"). 2. This song in particular, documents depression in its various stages and ends (when it reaches "the beginning") on a note of hope having been saved by his mother. Other songs also talk of depression, with one of the most notable descriptions of it I have heardcanywhere : "sometimes the within is piano black" in another of my favourites, Song of Myself. Dead Boy's Poem is yet another that I think you would bring a great reaction to.

This song was all about the backlash and blame that Tuomas faced after firing their 1st singer Tarja. "Everyone" had something to say about it, and mostly not in a good way. Thus followed depression and a subsequent suicide (luckily not in real life), hence the hand sliding across the throat just before the last movement of this song. This song deserves some homework beforehand to get the full story, although some say it's not necessary.

Aw you’re reaction to this is normal for absolutely everyone who watches ! It’s the most powerful experience that music can offer. There is a theme of loss but not as plain as you think. It’s a very deep emotional song about the ...(fireing)of the previous singer, Tarja , from the band who was singing since the start. It involved a letter. The leader nighwish, Toumas ( keyboardist) made the decision with band members support and sent the letter. In this song Toumas felt like committing ( virtual) suicide, hence the , 3 minutes and counting until ...he cut his throat ! It’s just a masterpiece of music. I’ve listened to it for years and every time, I’ve a tear in my eye. It’s just beautiful. Sorry for the long banter 😎🤦‍♂️

Greetings from Finland & thank you for your reaction to this masterpiece, the album version of which is sung by Anette Olzon before she was officially replaced by Floor in 2013. However, it's Floor that really hits you with all the emotional turmoil that inspired Tuomas to compose the song instead of killing himself. P.S. To demonstrate his precision in composing this song, it takes exactly three minutes from the young boy's voice saying "Now I only have three minutes..." to when the pendulum swings & Tuomas makes a gesture of cutting his throat with his right hand.

You've got that quite much right, without knowing the actual story behind it. Kudos 👍🌹you're a clever young lady 🤗 glad to join you on your Nightwish journey. And depression, yes, many more suffer it than we know our would believe. I did fall into that pit too and didn't want to accept or see it. But at some point it affects you as a whole, and you can't ignore it anymore. I think depression needs to be discussed more openly, so those who suffer from it see that they're not alone and that there's always a way out and forward, even if the mind wants you to think that all is dark and unbearable. I loved your honest and heart felt reaction ❤️🌹

The rest of the band checked on Touomas every time they played this! Unfortunately I don’t think they perform it anymore because it’s just too hard for Floor & him, it brings up too many bad memories.Touomas was suicidal when he composed ALL parts of this song. Very sad story! The “Shoulder” that cries more is the rest of the band. He didn’t feel he could go to them because he didn’t want to upset them more.

Hello Sarah Dengler. The song "The Poet and the Pendulum" is a 13 Minute journey through the mind and turmoil of Tuomas Holopainen after the year 2005. It was in that year the band parted with their long-time singer Tarja Turunen and had a personal falling out with her. The pain of the separation was big on both sides, and shown in this song. There is guilt for what happened, there is the responsibility that the band and Holopainen had to show towards the fans,. It was the End of an Era for them, and reason for Holopainen being lost as described in these lyrics. We can only of course to a certain degree suppose how much of these are truly Holopainen's feelings, wishes and pains - but we do know that the lyrics of Nightwish have been up to then very personal. Other songs on the album also digest this separation and falling out of the members with Turunen. However personal and "real" these thoughts are, I feel like this song definitely takes us not only on a journey with Holopainen but also into ourselves. The music underlines the emotional gravity of the song extremely well. And I believe a lot of people can actually relate to a sense of guilt and being overwhelmed that all they desired for is the safety of home and innocence. While being personal, the song can still ring true to it's listener. That's a quality Nighwish possesses in many, many more songs. The emotional journey is one we can all share and very few bands know how to put that journey into song and especially into sound as well as Nightwish does. The band remains through all it's shores and Oceans, one of my main favourites and I hold special place for the band in my musical heart. I hope you have enjoyed reading my analysis and share some of my thoughts. If you do have any comments, please feel free to let me know. And remember the beauty of interpretation is that it is subjective; we can see all and feel different things in the same song and continue to love it endlessly. Lyric analysis by Annika Hausen Greetings from the Netherlands

The Poet and the Pendulum was written after firing Tarja the original singer. She was the face of Nightwish at the time, and dear in all their hearts, especially Tuomas who considered her a muse to many of the songs he had written at that point, they had also grown up in the same city and knew each other since early childhood. All the band members decided together to fire her for acting too much of a diva. According to all the band members, Tarja was missing lots of rehearals and would not even travel with the band anymore. Tuomas was painted as the devil by many fans, and went through a deep dark depression. He even considered ending the band and committing suicide. He wrote The Poet and the Pendulum at that time, and actually kills himself in the song. He said he killed himself in the song, as to not do it in real life. To this day every time he plays it, it takes him back to those feelings, and shows on his face. In the last part, Mother and Father, words are sung to him that his real mother said to him at the time of this darkness in him. One part that touches me at the end when the guitarist Emppu and bassist Marko, the only other two involved with firing Tarja (that were still active with the band)were standing with Tuomas at the end in solidarity and love. Nice reaction.

Bleib gesund, Andrea

In the Nightwish Lexicon, The Poet is Tuomas. He writes as a way of expressing his emotions.

Tolle Reaction, danke.

WOW you did great considering you didn't know the story. In 2005 the band fired there 1st singer Tarja . Tuomas (Founder & Keyboard) was life long friends with her he wrote a public letter and his friends, fans, media blamed him and he became depressed , so he wrote this to commit suicide on stage to help put in behind him , the last part were words from his parents to help him. then at the very end the two members that were there when this went down Marco & Emppu stand next to him to show support even after all these years. this song is rarely performed.

Honestly real reaction, I felt your pain and sadness. If you did not feel the pain and sorrow followed by the hopeful "It will be alright" you are not really listening to it. Ultimately, it was eventually alright for Tuomas and the band, and everyone is in a much better place now. btw, Nightwish does an emotional strong, really good tribute version of Pink Floyd's High Hopes you should listen to. It was during the last tour with Tarja but she is offstage on a mid show break and Marco sings the song, with everyone giving a great performance. As a Pink Floyd fan I really enjoyed it.

If you like this group, you'd probably dig Queensryche. But, if you do anything from Operation Mindcrime, please know that it's a "concept" album. Much in the vein of this particular song's construction, one would think it's a musical "score" for a movie or a play (which if memory serves, that's how it was initially intended. But, for whatever reason, such never came to fruition). Also, their lead vocalist is world-class. You'd enjoy it played from the starting song to the end in order. Their first five LP releases are insanely good.
