This live version is really good but Mikael’s growls on the Ghost Reveries studio album is just the best ever! It’s the Opeth album I come back to. It has so many memorable riffs. Ghost of perdition, the baying of the hounds, the grand conjuration are all masterpieces!

Seen them play a few times and Mikael Akerfeldt the vocalist and guitarist is hilarious and has a fun time interacting with audience unlike any frontman ever. Once, he ate a Big Mac on stage while the band improvised a song...a fan brought it to him during the show and he sat and ate it!!! Thanks, Opeth! In these crazy times, you are the light AND the joy!!!

As Mikkael (the mastermind/vocalist) did put it, when I last have seen Opeth live, back in December 2019: 'Harlequin Forest... difficult to play, a nightmate to sing" still one of my favorite songs ever. I do see a lot of recommendations, and I easily would sign them all, especially Ghost of Perdition and Delivwrance. But for me, beeing into Opeth for way too long to still be sane, the journey Opeth have had made through musical styles and even genres is way more interesting. I am in the sad and pittyfull situation, that the opeth songs I love outweight the songs, that I, well, don't have on repeat 🙃😇🤣 so I also would love to highlight newer Songs, like the devil's Orchard, Sorceress, eternal rains will come, all things will pass, lovelorn crime or next of kin. Those songs, I believe, do show some sort of evolution in the thing we call Opeth. Thanks a lot for your reaction, it really felt like my own firstreaction to this very song.

The album that got me into this band (for good, and I do mean I'm gonna be listening to them for the rest of my life) is Blackwater Park. opeth is more addictive than crack. i can't even count how many times i've listened to an opeth album for weeks on end, then tell myself i need to listen to something else, only to go back to the same opeth album after 1 or 2 songs from something else. it is very. very difficult to cleanse opeth from your pallet and enjoy other music.

The whole Opeth catalogue is amazing. Harlequin Forest is one of my favorite, the atmosphere and progression of the song is something special. I don't know what to recommend because there are so many amazing Opeth tracks. You need to listen to quite a few tracks to get what this band sound is. Earlier Opeth is heavier, recent Opeth is more straight prog but I like both haha.

Opeth has gone more toward the prog end of the spectrum over the last ten years or so, they were originally much heavier. Mikael the vocalist has really stepped up his game on the clean vocals, but unfortunately his harsh vocals have sounded really forced and grunting since 2012 or so. I don't think he growls much at all anymore. To really hear him in peak form I recommend "Deliverance" from the Shepherds Bush Empire concert in London, 2003. This is classic Opeth and classic Mikael.

Yeah I like the earlier stuff better. They were more driven and creative then. I find Prog boring. Always have since it started (Yes; Genesis, etc) Never did anything but bore me. The weak drug free boozed up version of Acid Rock which I LOVED. See The Doors, Zeppelin, Hendrix, Velvet Underground, P Funk, and the Grateful Dead 1968 to 1971 and then again Blues for Allah (75) to 1979. The second era is actually pretty proggy but never dull. I preferred Captain Beefheart and Zappa, (Hot Rats '69) to mid (Bongo Fury, 76). I LOVE Bach and Mozart but that is not Rock. Rock needs energy! I prefer 1st decade Slayer to Prog any day and it was they who inspired Opeth at their start!

Glad to see you finally getting to Opeth. One of my favorite bands though I prefer all the albums from Watershed and earlier. I'm not as much into their newer sounds. This is my favorite song though they have so many great songs. EDIT: They are not as technical as Dream Theater but I think their composition is superior. Dream Theater is one of my top three favorite bands. Opeth is another one. I describe Opeth like eating a 5 course meal. The song is broken up into different flavored entrees that tell a story when combined together.

Opeth is my favorite band, and you're going to get great requests that can last for months to come. Since that community takes care of itself I'd like to take the chance on suggesting Caligula's Horse. Much like Dream Theater but I'd like to say much less cheesy and adapted to the modern musicscape. They have many great songs, most of their fans would suggest Graves, which is a brilliant track, maybe one to build up to, but for it's runtime, I think Dream the Dead is one of the greatest composed songs in recent history.

Bro, do some more Opeth reactions and I will gladly subscribe. Funny that you mention that you haven't heard anything this tight musically since Dream Theater, Opeth and Dream Theater are my 2 favorite metal bands. Both very progressive but totally apples and oranges in comparison. Opeth is heavier and darker, very moody, more bleak and anguished sounding while DT is vibrantly bright and flashy, oozing technicality on their instruments. More Opeth songs to check out would definitely be Blackwater Park & Deliverance, both are title tracks off their respective albums. I have a feeling you will find many of Opeth's songs to be "masterpieces".

From their later work I would recommend their latest album 'In Cauda Venenum,' but I'd suggest listening to it AFTER a few of their other classic albums like 'Ghost of Perdition', 'My Arms Your Hearse,' Deliverance and Damnation and definitely the aforementioned 'Watershed' albums (honestly they are all amazing in their own way. It took a very long time for me to connect with Opeth, around 10 years, but when once the click happened, I didn't hear a sound of something slotting into place but of flood gates opening and a torrent of understanding rushing in. Opeth are incredible! The frontman, Mikael Akerfeldt, is best friends with Steven Wilson (formerly of Porcupine Tree) and the two immensely influenced each other's work over the years. Steven produced 5 Opeth albums (Blackwater Park, Deliverance, Damnation, Heritage and Pale Communion), while Opeth strongly influenced PT's later albums (In Absentia, and Fear Of A Blank Planet, to name a couple). Another band worth checking out is KATATONIA, whose frontman Jonas Renkse is another best friend of Mikael's and Blackwater Park was actually partly recorded at Jonas' house. In fact, Mike filled in for Jonas on vocals in 1996, and recorded "Brave Murder Day" (their second album) with them. That era of Katatonia's career though is radically different from everything else they've written since because Jonas fucked up his voice so much from screaming badly between 1992-1996. The third album "Discouraged Ones" showcased a permanent switch to clean singing on his part, and Mikael also provided backing vocals on this album and vocal production on their 4th album "Tonight's Decision". Anyway, one Katatonia song I recommend (out of the many great ones that they have lol) is "Forsaker"

KZfaq served me up this video probably because I listen to a lot of Opeth on here and I'm so glad to hear you enjoyed this track! It's one of my faves, and I'd say is kind of like the ideal form of what Opeth has to offer; rollercoasters of fast and heavy, mixed in with chill bluesy interludes. That whole album (Ghost Reveries) is what got me into them in the first place and it's fucking amazing. Their album Blackwater Park is comparable, and probably most folks will tell you its better and it's got some bangers for sure but taken as a whole I think is a little bit weaker. Don't let folks tell you that their new shit is not as good either! It's different in tone, Mikael doesn't do the growling vocals anymore, but they are still putting out excellent albums. Listen to the song "Cusp of Eternity" or "Heart in Hand" and then tell me they don't still kick ass!!

Great choice. From the greatest Hard Rock band of all time (Led Zeppelin) to perhaps the best of the past two decades, Opeth. Good work man! Great musicianship. At some point you MUST do Parliament Funkadelic who were rightly Zep's favorite band at the time (see 'The Crunge'). Check out the 1976 Texas Gig. (I have the entire gig saved on my PC but it is on U tube asl well. We want the Funk with the Jackson brothers and Sly Stone on stage at the end. It is the only concert as perfect as good as TSRTS by Zeppelin or Woodstock. That's how AWESOME it is. No filler just thriller. Not one weak or even meh tune. just driven perfection. Opeth at their best are also driven perfection!

Ghost Reveries is a good album to check out. Also the 3 preceding albums from Blackwater Park up I feel is their best run. Coincidentally those albums are produced by Porcupine Tree mastermind Steven Wilson. Another band you should check out, if haven't already! Best Opeth tracks from that era include: Bleak, The Drapery Falls, Deliverance, Beneath The Mire, The Baying of the Hounds, Windowpane (non-metal)...
