It's a combination of planning things out really well before hand, doing as much as they could do affordably and practically, making sure the lighting was spot on. You would be surprised how much lighting can make something look real or fake regardless of the model. Having more shots in darkness can help hide things and enhance believability but even the shots during the day look great so, overall they put a lot of fantastic work into the modeling, texturing, animation, and rendering of Davy Jones and his crew.

theres a deleted scene in one of the movies that mentions the reason jack was branded a pirate was because he stole cargo he was supposed to deliver for beckett, with jack replying "people arent cargo mate". its a fantastic piece of dialogue showing that jack was only branded as a criminal because he freed slaves from the british navy*, i have no idea why it was deleted, it adds a lot of depth to his character. *Edit: east india trading company not british navy

The Liar's Dice scene is actually very clever. There's a video that analyzes it and how the game flows and helps tell us things about the characters. It served an interesting narrative purpose, on top of introducing many children to an old game that is actually very fun. To add to the origin of that game, it's actually from the Incan Empire and became popular in Europe when the Spanish brought it over. Obviously, a lot of dark history there, but it is cool that such a popular game comes from a Mesoamerican culture.

To give you some context, as the movies don't go into it, Beckett had Jack under his employ and told him to transport some cargo. (That cargo being 100 slaves) Jack refused and set them free. Beckett then branded Jack as a pirate then burned and sank his ship. Some time later, Jack jad come across Davy Jones and struck a deal with him. Jones would raise the ship from the depths of the ocean and Jack would captain it for 13 years. When the ship was raised it came out black, hence the name The Black Pearl. I say this for 2 reasons. The first being that at the end of the movie, you see the slaves that Jack freed at Tia Dalma's hut, morning his passing. The second reason is that Jones' deal to Jack in the movie was for Jack to trade 100 sould for his freedom. (The same ammount of souls he had freed before losing his ship to Beckett) Jones basically told Jack to deliver to him 100 people who would become Slaves to the Dutchman. (Something that Jack is completely against as he constantly talks about how much freedom means to him.)

Fun Fact: nobody on set knew that Geoffrey Rush would return as Barbossa, so their surprised reactions to him appearing at the end were real! Also, Davy Jones is kind of like the Grim Reaper of the sea, so the original deal that he made with Jack was to raise his ship from the depths of the ocean after he was burned and sunk by the East India Trading Company. Another fun fact, the "Black Pearl" was originally called the "Wicked Wench", but Jack renamed it when it was restored since the ship turned black from the fire.

Davey Jones is still recognized as the best CG character ever in film. It's actually insane how well he's held up and how much Hollywood has failed to replicate him. If you want to see Bill Nighy (Davey Jones) and Johnny Depp face off against each other again, I'd reccomend watching the animated movie Rango. Absolute classic and their on screen chemistry translated so well to animation. A lot of people mistake Elizabeth in this movie for being in love with Jack, but it was always a red herring. She was fascinated with Jack yes, he represented the freedom of piracy she was fascinated with since a girl, but she never wanted him romantically. The compass pointed to him the first time because he had the letters she had just begged him for in his pocket, and the second time because it was pointing to where the chest was buried. Only flirted with him to vex him and kissed him to kill him. And I love the little detail that when Mr. Gibbs says Jack's honest streak won out, even though Elizabeth feels guilty because she believes Gibbs is wrong, he's actually right, Jack had the time to survive and chose to go down how a Captain should. I like the trend of the tall one of the dumb pirate duo being surprisingly smart, he could've easily been a one-note stooge but he's got a lot of reflection in him. Barbossa coming back is a highlight of the series, and he finally got to taste that green apple. The next one is probably my favorite of the series, it gets even darker but they managed to up the epic scale of it. The Magic Conch is never wrong.

To answer your question at 15:24-ish. They did miniatures for the big full pulled out shots battle pieces (and explosions). They half built ships for the close ups (like on the deck type of shots) during battles and others. They had it in a special building where water would be sprayed and it would rock back and forth!!! I 1000% recommend looking up the behind the scenes for these movies! It’s really cool and interesting!! Technically the girl (I don’t know the actress name) who play Elizabeth was technically under age for the first movie. She had to have her mom with her on set. She also was really scared to jump off the ship in the first movie, it took literal days before they got the shoot that they ended using.

39:10, If you haven't already, I highly recommend you look up the extended version of this scene. It is CRIMINAL that it wasn't included. To sum up, Will bets 100 years of service against his and his father's freedom and wins. Jones does a sarcastic little clap by hitting his pipe against his claw and as he walks away Will demands another game. Jones stops and tells Will, "You can't best the Devil twice," to which Will replies, "Then why are you walking away?"

1:06:21 Those people were indeed holding a vigil for Jack. According to supplementary material, they were slaves, whom Beckett tasked Jack with transporting on the Pearl (then called Wicked Wench). Jack instead took them to Tia, and set them free, resulting in him getting branded. Beckett's fleet eventually hunted him down, and sunk the Wench, which is when Jack called upon Davy Jones and made the deal. Since the ship was burnt by Beckett, when Jones raised it, it's wood remained black.

SPOILERS for the next movie: That's not true? The entire crew resemble sea creatures because Davey Jones was not doing his duty of transporting souls to the afterlife. That's why the curse lifts for everyone when Will takes over. Davey Jones love Calypso WAS the manifestation of the sea.

Funny there was a theory of how Jack keeps being lucky getting out of trouble or seemingly escape every scenario. The theory is that Jack's hat brings him luck every time he puts it on evaded issues. Kinda funny how he kept outting hats on throughout this movie and was constantly unlucky. In the first movie he took off his hat a couple times to save Elizabeth but evaded getting hanged by intertwining with Elizabeth and Will. Just a theory not confirmed

if you didn't know already, fun fact: there is a deleted scene explaining the whole Jack - Davy Jones origin. Jack had prior dealings with the east india trading company, was transporting cargo for them on his ship "the wicked wench". some time into his work for them he was ordered by Beckett to bring 100 slaves from Afrika to America. Jack set them free instead because "people ain't cargo". as punishment he was brandmarked by Beckett, his ship set aflame and sunk to the bottom of the ocean. Jack then struck a deal with Davy Jones to raise his ship - burnt now, that's why the black pearl is black and so "run down". The deal was he could have his ship for another 13 jears as captain. then the mutany started and Jack lost the Pearl. that's the backstory which for a reason I will never understand they cut from the movies - and that's also why Davy Jones is asking for specifically 100 souls, 'cause that's what Jack lost his ship for once before.

They did, in fact, build ships for these movies. Fun fact: I was queueing with a friend to get the autograph of one of the people who went to the moon. We started talking with the person behind who was also queueing. Turns out it was one of the designers of the black pearl + others, and their initial design was rejected immediately by the builders. They'd apparently based it on the Vasaskeppet (The Vasa Ship) (we had just been to that museum). That ship sank before even leaving port. So yes, in the most roundabout way, they did, actually build the ships and this was how I found out.

Okay, so let’s break down the game of dice for everyone that needs to know. The rules are such: all players roll dice in a cup and then have to place bets on how many total of a certain number there are under the cups. For example: A player can wager 5 ones, this means he is betting that out of all the cups in play, there are five dice that rolled 1. Now to increase the bet you can go one of two ways. Increase the number of dice, or increase the value. For example, a player bets 5 ones, your bet could be to either raise it to 7 ones, or maybe raise it to 3 threes. This ostensibly changes the wager from “How many ones are under the cups.” To “how many threes are under the cups.” The turn ends when the next player challenges the bid. So Bill betting “12 fives” after Will is essentially him falling on the sword because HE knows there is no way there 12 fives in play, the Dutchman knows it, and Will knows it. He is challenging the Dutchman to call him on it. This puts the Dutchman in a situation: if he calls, then he doesn’t get Will in a debt. If he doesn’t, it makes him seem weak to the crew. It is a wonderful catch 22.

The most unbelievable part of this movie is that the water wheel sequence was done practically. They were actually on/in that fuckin thing sword fighting (with a lot of safety lines and a very carefully controlled roll-speed, but still)! Edit: Large portions of the sequence were done practically, there are obviously still some portions that are clearly CGI, but most of the wide shots and closeups where it's not like, tumbling off a mountain were practical.

Every other reaction I've seen of this movie someone always blurts it out before the reveal happens and it pisses me off so much lol. That reveal when I watched it for the first time was nuts! So good! I hate when one person makes a correct prediction and ruins is. Let the unexpected happen lol

So the backstory of Jack and the Black Pearl is he was part of the navy and Beckett told him to transport 100 people to slavery and he said people aren’t cargo stole the wicked wench with the 100 people on board Beckett then had the ship attacked and sank and branded Jack as a pirate. Jack then made the deal with Jones to raise the ship from the ocean although it had then been burned black so Jack renamed it to be known as the black pearl. Jack would captain the ship for 13 years then join Jones Crew for 100 years which is why when Jones asked for 100 souls it shows how Jack changed as he lost the ship trying to save 100 people and was then willing to sacrifice 100 people to save himself
