Speaking of Anthony Beevor: The Mystery of Olga Chekhova (2004) is one of the most captivating biographies I've ever read. Her life is like a history lesson in itself. Not heavy reading at all! The actress Olga Chekhova (often spelt "Tschechowa") was the niece of Anton Chekhov's (the brilliant Russian playwright) wife Olga Chekhova (a magnificent actress herself). Her life was filled with stories, stories too strange to be true, and true events stranger than fiction - a mystery indeed! She was, or might have been, many things; one of Hitler's favourite actresses, a femme fatale, a formidable liar, a highly accomplished and intelligent person, a survivor, a propaganda tool in Nazi-Germany and a clever Soviet spy... A strong human being, who did what she had to do, only she did it her way...!

Paulus was actually promoted to Field Marshal, the highest rank in the German military, days before the surrender. Since no German Field Marshal had ever been captured up to that point, Hitler was clearly implying that Paulus should commit suicide rather than allow himself to be captured. He didn't and ended up being the highest ranked POW captured by the Soviets during the entire war.

My grandfather was in the 2nd Hungarian royal army as forced labor at Voronyezs near Stalingrad where tthe whole Hungarian army 200000 strong was destroyed. He walked home thousands of kms to home on foot in minus 40 celsius. He always loved Italians because Italian troops gave him food which was a house cat. One of the Italians went under the table and started to make cat noises this way he knew what he was eating.

Sabaton: don't touch Russia! - The first time we came to you in 2011 with the Scorpions, then we played 8 or 10 shows. Then... In general, in my opinion, this is already our second Russian headlining tour. And so we also came as support for Iron Maiden. - Were there any problems with the organization of concerts? I remember that in 2013 your performance on the bike the show in Volgograd was canceled due to complaints. Allegedly, one of the inhabitants of the city saw the Nazis in you. - (Laughs) No, since then there have been no such problems. And he was a local politician who decided to impose his erroneous opinion on everyone. But it wasn't like that anymore. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hLaWbLuntJOpep8.html

I get it, this song is absolutely not for everyone. When I had a CD player in my car, I would skip it and go straight to "Into the Fire". But you have to admit, it is a heavy, grind-y song. And with lines like "Play the score of the damned" (easily the best line of the song) it really conjures some scary images. And then just the thought of the battle of Stalingrad in general is horrifying. A lot of people got thrown into that fight; we're talking millions on each side. So I think every word of the lyrics is appropriate.

I also have mixed feelings about this song. On the one hand, it's one of Sabaton's heaviest songs with also very strong lyrics from a historical source. On the other hand, I find the mishmash between the cadence of the lyrics and the rhythm of the music quite jarring. It's one of those songs that I would love to enjoy but I just can't... BTW, after Touchy's comment about his colonoscopy, I just NEED to recommend him to listen to "Uranus" by Nanowar of Steel.

The patreon pull really put Stalingrad before Purple Heart... Either they're saving Purple heart for last or well I can't think of any other reason that might make sense. You started off with a song that's close to you. So why not save the other song that would be for the end. While it might not be a medal you have received. It's unfortunately rare to serve without knowing someone who would.

This is definitely lacking on the lyrical side. "It's colder than hell" and "And when your time comes you will know that it's time" sum the lyrics up fairly well lol I like the heaviness of the music though. The thing with the lyrics is, they don't have much to do with Stalingrad. Some of the lyrics are weird, some are pretty cool, like the symphony of death part and the part about a single violin. I like the song, but on this one I can see why some might not like it.

Preach! EDIT: Ok, upon further contemplation, the music isn't that bad, but it's like the lyrics and music don't match. I can't put my finger on it, but it's such a mess. And in a way, the dissonance is effective, as it paints this picture of utter chaos, but even if that was their intent I still think they went about it in a weird way.
