I'm 63 and watched all this go down in real-time. Bird was my hero but where I lived people loved both those teams human magic and It was the best time of all the years of the NBA for me which I still watch. Michael Jordan was my hero in the 90s for a while until I found out how bad he treated everyone and then I learned more about birds game by watching film. @@DailyCT VASTLY different leadership styles. Robert Parish played for the Celtics and for Micheal Jordan's Bulls. He called MJ a bully. Always yelling. The Chief answered him back about "The Celtics still stomp you" and Micheal wasn't happy. Thus Robert (who was at the end of his career at the time and a bench player) barely got minutes. Larry, on the other hand, would chide his teammates (Sissies comment comes to mind) but mostly led by example. He wasn't demeaning or cruel. The only times he was selfish was the last quarter of a close game and he leaned on his clutch abilities. He just wanted to win, same for Micheal, but Larry didn't NEED the ball to win. Micheal did. Also, Larry had the ability to elevate his teammates MJ didn't. If MJ did, he would have won more games his first year on the Bulls. Larry did.

I'm taking bird as "The Goat". mj is in my top 3 but the Bulls dynasty didn't start until bird literally beat it into mj's head that basketball was a team sport. In the 80's early 90's every time mj got the ball he went for the hoop while bird got the entire team involved. mj had some impressive individual stats (so did bird) but bird walked away with the W's. It wasn't until bird retired and mj understood that it takes the whole team to win that the bulls started dominating. bird entered the league has a rookie with that mindset after his undefeated Indiana State college team was schooled by magic's Michigan State team who won the game by simply double teaming bird the whole night.

@mr.invisable6919 I couldn't agree more. That is what Jordon and LeBron fans don't seem to be able to grasp. I consider Bird to be like a savant at a level higher than the others, and everyone else can fight over who is the GOAT. Bird had a Gretzky like sense of what was going to happen before it actually did. I only wish I could have seen more of Bird. Bostonians were truly blessed. They had Larry Bird , Bobby Orr, Babe Ruth and Ted Williams, and Tom Brady. They need to build a "Mt. Rushmore" like monument to these greats.

Bird scored 60 points in a game....& his team won! But not just bc of Bird ....the whole team was involved! Jordan did not learn that until a bit later.... that points do not win games! The thing is when Bird came in his rookie year ..he took a losing team and doubled their wins that year! Took the championship the second year! A lot of guys just like Jordan....wanna be the star of the team! They think they're only job is to grab the ball and run it back to the net to get more points. But....they're there to win the game and that takes the whole team! I think that is a big problem with the NBA today.... everybody wants to be the star.

Everybody had their kryptonite (weakness). Michael Jordan had Larry Bird. Larry Bird had Magic Johnson as his kryptonite. Losing to him in the the 1979 NCAA Championship and two out of three times in the NBA Finals. Larry Bird says Magic is the best he's ever seen. One last thing, Magic is credited with a game-winning skyhook, what is not often shown on KZfaq videos is that Larry Bird got a final shot off with 3.2 seconds left and missed. If winning is the most important thing, Magic Johnson has the highest winning percentage against every team and for a career And the better percentage of going to the playoff and finals Then bird Jordan and LeBron.

It's hard for people to understand unless they grew up during the 80's era basketball. People do not know how much tougher the east was compared to the west. The Lakers?!!?! Boston had to fight just to get past the early 80's Bucks and 76ers. Go check out the 83 76ers with their 65-17 record winning the NBA finals by sweeping the Lakers....that's right, they swept them. Then Boston had the Pistons and Chicago in the late 80's and early 90's. Also if the Lakers had made the 86 NBA finals the score would be Boston 2 and Lakers 2 in the finals. That being said, I do give Magic the nod over Bird as the better player, not MJ. Bird ate Jordan for breakfast and swept him twice in the playoffs. Jordan didn't start getting more wins against Bird until the latter end of his career...... after all the greats from the 80's were leaving or had left.

Just a little pushback on Michael Jordans teams not being very good. Mike had to learn to get all of his team involved in the first 3 quarters so he could take over in the 4th quarter and dominate. Tex Winters' triangle offense helped that, but it was mostly Mike having to learn that if he controls the ball the entire game and it gets down to the last 10 minutes the rest of his team are all cold because they haven't touched the ball all game. So absolutely his back to back teams were better but his original teams were not that bad it's just Mike had to learn how to spread the love.

Id take Larry for both shots. I just think Riley had to say something nice about MJ. Larry is more clutch than MJ. Larry is my GOAT

No, Jordan’s team was good. They just weren’t dominating champion good without Jordan, the way they were with Jordan. But the same can be said of the Celtics. Parish and McHale were good, but they wouldn’t have been great without Bird. The biggest difference between Jordan and Bird: Jordan made the Bulls better by adding his own scoring. Bird made the Celtics better not only with his own scoring, but by making everybody on his team look better because of his passing, rebounding, assists, picks, and steals. The star at that time who had the best supporting cast was Magic Johnson. If you had surrounded Bird with Kareem, James Worthy, etc. instead of McHale, Parrish, etc., Bird’s team would have won 7 straight NBA championships. That’s how you know Bird and Jordan were better than Magic. Bird and Jordan took decent teams and made them champions. Magic took an already championship-caliber team and simply kept it there.
