I really appreciate the fact that they had an entire season making it clear that Kirk's devotion to his career and duty matter most to him, to the point where he can even do things like shake off the influence of the spores, only to have him show in this episode that friendship matters even more.

To answer the "convenience" statement about the ending with Kirk not getting trouble with Starfleet for violating orders. Listen to the dialogue again. It's heavily implied that T'Pau called in a favor to Starfleet to let Kirk off the hook (remember she was offered a federation council seat, but turned it down..she has powerful friends).
@CDP1861

Illogical. Why would she intervene in favor of someone who had been killed in front of her eyes? And why not for Spock to get him off the hook for something that outsiders are not supposed to know about?

@@CDP1861 Your second point has merit. However, I think it is more likely, given the timing, that she sent off her message before showing up to the ceremony. While they were planet-side Starfleet was discussing and sending new orders. Of course if it was after Kirk's "death," then it could've been to keep his record clean as a way of honoring the human action, but I think it was done before.

@@CDP1861 I always assumed that T'Pau didn't inform Starfleet what the Enterprise was doing in Vulcan. Everything else was her just fixing a mess. I know there is a lot, but two moments that I always enjoyed were. 1. When Kirk, McCoy and Spock were on the turbolift discussing going to the planet and Spock asks Kirk to go, right at the end he looks at the Doctor and says," I also request McCoy." The response of "I would be honored, sir," shows the friendship hidden under the banter. 2. Spock's statement of "I see no logic in preferring Stonn to me," may be one of the greatest burns in TV history. Nice job on the channel so far.

There's also an interesting trivia here. Spock has slightly greenish skin. That's because Vulcans are supposed to have green blood (based on copper oxide instead of iron oxide like our red one). Gene Roddenberry spun a more imaginative story in later years, that someone had sent him an article from the Soviet newpaper Pravda, which complained that Soviet Russia had gotten to space first but the crew of the Enterprise didn't have any Russians, so Gene conceived Chekov. This was more than likely just a good story (as Gene was prone to spinning), and even the actor Walter Koenig himself conceded that the Russians likely weren't getting the broadcast of Star Trek at the time.

Couple of notes - The Vulcan hand salute was improvised on the set and was to be used only if Celia loveski, Who played T’Pau, could do it. She could, with a little assistance. So it was adopted. It is derived from an ancient Hebrew symbol used in Judaic ceremonies. Little 10 year old Leonard Nimoy noticed it and adapted it years later for Star Trek. Couple of weeks after the episode aired, Leonard Nimoy was driving home from the studio one night and he stopped at a signal, and noticed the young lady driving the auto next to him was staring at him and smiling. He smiled back and immediately she raised her arm and did the Vulcan salute. Delighted, Nimoy rolled his window down and asked her if she could do it with her other hand, too. When she couldn’t do it very well , she smiled and said “I guess I speak it with an accent “

Yes, there were no special miniatures made for this episode, the wide shots were modern CGI. Interestingly, the city seen in the background is supposed to be Shi Kar, where we learn Spock grew up as a child in the Animated episode Yesteryear. The CGI version is pretty faithful to the cartoon version; I love that detail! The ceremonial ground with the surrounding stones and the hexagonal gong are recreated in an episode of Strange New Worlds.

The city you see in the background is based on the design created for the animated Star Trek TV series from the 70s. Also, in the Star Trek reboot, when Spock is shown as a child, he and his peers are dressed in a costume that is reminiscent of the one his character wears as a child in the animated series. In the cartoon, the Vulcan school boys wear a black speedo with a blue diagonal belt or sash across their torso. In the movie, they are more fully clothed but are dressed in black tunics with the same blue sash.

This episode was written by Theodore Sturgeon, one of the greats of the 60's New Wave science fiction writers. His writing was very concerned with relationships, sex, religion, divinity, etc. Very original guy. He'd submitted the concept in the first year, when established SF writers were courted by Roddenberry for treatments and scripts. (There were quite a few big names in this show's credits.) It was thought that a visit to Spock's home world would be a good place to start the second season, given that he had somehow amassed an ENORMOUS following. Seriously, Nimoy was getting whole bags of mail; it was insane. (Shatner wasn't too thrilled about that.) Placing this episode first just cemented all that and Spock became a social phenomenon. Fun times!
@BossNerd
@BossNerd 2 жыл бұрын
Like Josh said - they were really trying to pull out all the stops for this one - it was nominated for a Hugo award. Rodenberry did a good job of setting up a general framework and then bringing in great writers like Sturgeon to write legitimate Science Fiction. As much as I like Firefly it is pretty soft SciFi - except the movie - that had some legit hard SciFi components. Sturgeon added so much to the Vulcan lore - especially the fact that behind that logical veneer lies a raging beast. This is very reminiscent of Forbidden Planet's unseen Krel. Considering all the godlike creatures they encounter - I think Rodenberry must have fixated on this idea when watching Forbidden Planet. But we see Rodenberry believes there is a logical progression and therefore hope we do not destroy ourselves. In the next episode we see at least we are no longer worshipers.

I’ve changed my mind over the years about which TOS episode is my favorite, but at present this one wears the crown. It’s also the second of the five TOS episodes nominated for the 1968 Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation, which “The City on the Edge of Forever” won. The shots of Kirk, Spock and McCoy crossing the rock bridge were added in the episode’s 21st-century remastering to explain the featureless red backdrop of the set: the ceremonial arena is so high up that only sky is visible beyond it. Fortunately, the Big Three are far enough from the camera in these shots that viewers can’t tell that they’re CGI people. With the addition of Chekov, TOS is now back to having seven regular characters, as it did prior to Janice Rand’s departure in Season 1. “Amok Time” was Walter Koenig’s first broadcast appearance as Chekov, but not the first episode he filmed; Season 2 TOS episodes continued to air in a different order from that in which they were made. NBC wanted “Amok Time” on the air as soon as possible due to the popularity of the Spock character. Theodore Sturgeon began writing “Amok Time” during Season 1, and NBC hoped the episode would be ready in time to be part of that season, but this turned out not to be possible. In addition to the iconic “fight music”, which would be reused in other TOS episodes and in later parodies and homages, this episode introduces TOS’ musical leitmotif for Spock, something he didn’t have in Season 1. Composer Gerald Fried sought to convey the paradox of Spock’s nature by composing a romantic theme for him to be played on an unromantic instrument, the bass guitar. This theme would also recur in later episodes. I always forget between viewings of this episode that the scene with Chapel in Spock’s quarters implies he is considering having sex with her until she tells him the Enterprise is on course for Vulcan. The TOS staff convinced Theodore Sturgeon to remove one really stupid element from the script. Sturgeon originally had T’Pring arrive at the ceremonial site in a Vulcan flying machine, but - since he knew the show wouldn’t be able to afford to build such a machine - he had its arrival indicated by an off-screen sound effect. Fortunately, the show’s staff knew how lame that would be and got him to have the wedding party arrive on foot. As with the Romulans in “Balance of Terror”, the background Vulcans wear helmets to save the expense of giving them pointed ears. (In fact, they’re the same helmets reused.) Since the Federation does not have the death penalty for murder (as implied by “The Menagerie”), Spock’s response to T’Pau’s “Live long and prosper” after Kirk’s apparent death - “I will do neither. I have killed my captain and my friend” - suggests that he is contemplating suicide. In the past, some fans assumed that Vulcans have sex only during pon farr, and therefore that Spock was still a virgin at the end of this episode. However, D. C. Fontana, the scriptwriter of “This Side of Paradise”, who was considered TOS’ greatest expert on Vulcans, said in later years that this was incorrect, and that pon farr means only that Vulcans are biologically compelled to have sex at that time, not that they cannot do so at other times. Thus, it remains likely that Spock and Leila Kalomi made love during “This Side of Paradise” (as signified by Spock’s costume change in that episode). Fans have speculated that when Stonn is interrupted while saying “The woman is -” he was trying to say, “The woman is pregnant.” In fact, Arlene Martel (T’Pring) thought that her costume resembled a maternity dress, and therefore played the role on the assumption that T’Pring was pregnant with Stonn’s child. (Notice how she glances down at her belly immediately after Stonn’s interrupted line.) Fans have also speculated that T’Pau guesses that McCoy’s injection of Kirk is a ploy to bring about a non-fatal outcome and allows him to give it anyway. On my most recent viewing I thought I noticed an extremely subtle, almost subliminal flash of expression on T’Pau’s face when McCoy tells her about the injection which suggests that this may be the case. What do others think? T’Pring’s logical plan is what the TV Tropes website calls a “Xanatos Gambit” (named after the recurring villain from "Gargoyles"): an evil scheme which inevitably results in success for the plotter no matter what happens. When TOS was first broadcast in West Germany it was programmed as a children's series. As a result, “Amok Time” was heavily edited and altered in dubbing to remove the sexual elements. Spock contracted a rare space disease which McCoy treated with an experimental drug, causing Spock to hallucinate fighting with Kirk. Some TOS fans feel that “The Man Trap” was a bad choice for the series premiere because it was an atypical episode. Personally, I think NBC made good choices for both of TOS’ first two season premieres; even today, “The Man Trap” and “Amok Time” remain solid jumping-off points for new viewers (although I see Alex’s point about “Amok Time” being a less-than-ideal introduction to Spock). As you will eventually see, NBC made a far worse choice of episode for the Season 3 premiere, although I think you’ll also be able to see why they chose it.

I think you are correct! I believe T'pau knew T'pring was preggo, and that T'pau saw the use of the hypo as a logical and clever way to shuffle out of the mess that Vulcan tradition demanded of Spock. It also explains why she contacts Starfleet, "accepting" their offer to divert their course to Vulcan. Celia Lovsky was an incredible actress, and only through the magic of video recording are we able to catch the subtle nuances of her character that were never noticed upon the first viewing. Spot on. Great observations! EDIT: Reading your comment, I just HAD to look up which episode was aired first in the third season to remind me and give your statement some context - lol! Some fans preferred to see Spock as asexual. Or that he was secretly waiting for one of them. But I think he and Leila made love. He also later has sex with the Romulan commander and also with the woman he is trapped in the past with. I don't think that T'Pau knew what McCoy was up to. I also think that she intervened with Star Fleet because Spock and his family were important to her. And maybe she developed respect for Kirk and McCoy as well. I also enjoyed how T'Pring fills in Spock's back story, telling us how he has become well respected by other Vulcans. And of Kirk reminds us that Spock had saved his life many times before, and probably been commended for his actions by Star Fleet. Lots of little details that expand our knowledge of Vulcan, Star Fleet and the Federation. I read a lot of SF as a teen, checking out a lot of books from the library. The public library restricted access to general fiction and mystery novels and other genres that dealt with sex and sexuality. But science fiction was presumed to be harmless children's literature. Needless to say, I looked for any novels and stories that had sex in them. Also ran into stories that were subversive and deeply political.

During the first season I was in the 1st grade, and Star Trek was on too late for me to watch on a school night. I caught only fragments of a few episodes (the Squire of Gothos & Devil in the Dark) when I wasn’t supposed to. But for the second season, Trek was moved to Friday nights, and I begged my parents to let me stay up for the 8:30 broadcast time. They relented, and I watched it religiously the whole season. Thus, on September 15, 1967, Amok Time was the first Trek episode I ever saw all the way through. I thought it was miraculous. At seven, the “birds and the bees“ aspect went over my head, but I had a very strong romantic sense, even at that age, and so understood the emotional issues if not the physical ones. When I thought Spock head killed Kirk, I took it very seriously. One of the rare and delightful things about this episode is the interaction between junior officers. Sulu and Chekov are clearly trying to do competent work despite the unpredictability of their superiors, a tiny window into how the rest of the ship operates when the senior officers aren’t around. Of course this episode was written by Theodore Sturgeon (who also wrote Shore Leave), one of the greatest literary writers in science fiction of that era. In my opinion, Gerald Fried’s original music for this episode is what makes it work. Alas, those miniatures weren’t in the original broadcast.

In my personal head canon, I always felt that T'Pau knows what McCoy is up to, and lets him go ahead, and then respecting how close Kirk, Spock, and McCoy are, willing to risk life and career for each other (who knows what might have happened if McCoy's scheme had been uncovered on the spot?) she immediately contacts Star Fleet to tell them to back off. Vulcans are telepathic after all, and maybe T'Pau is an extraordinarily powerful telepath, and has read Kirk's and McCoy's minds to some extent.

A word about the writer of this episode, Theodore Sturgeon: he was partly the inspiration for Kurt Vonnegut's fictional character Kilgore Trout, although Vonnegut put a lot of himself into Trout, too. Sturgeon also wrote the Season One episode, "Shore Leave." Like Harlan Ellison, Richard Matheson, George Clayton Johnson, and Robert Bloch, he was a fairly big deal. Star Trek hired good writers.

I think you missed someting there. Star Fleet didn't approve the delay out of convenience just randomly. Kirk commented that it was T'Pau who convinced Star Fleet to grant the delay to make up for what happened. She respected Kirk enough after he didn't turn down the challenge. That was the payoff to the line Kirk said earlier "That's T'Pau, I cannot back down in front of her".

I meant more convenient from a writing perspective. Logically in the show it makes sense and you’re correct. It just always bothers me when a problem is introduced in a plot and then it gets solved without the characters having to do anything. Great review, guys! This is an important episode in the lore of Star Trek. Concepts established within this episode, particularly pertaining to Vulcan culture, will be revisited and built upon throughout the franchise. Additionally, the city you saw in the background is the city of Shikahr, the capital of Vulcan, which will be revisited up close many times throughout the franchise-and on “Enterprise,” regularly, and you will see that it is a very futuristic, somewhat Coruscant-like, but also very Vulcan, very ancient and rust-colored as established in Amok Time. The next time we see Vulcan and the city of ShiKar is in “The Animated Series,” looking very much as you see in this episode. By the way, it is very important that you DO NOT SKIP the 1973 animated series, which picks up were this series leaves off. There is a particularly important canonical episode set in the suburbs of ShiKahr as well as the harsh Vulcan wilderness known as the Forge. That animated episode, along with Amok Time, together form the foundation of Vulcan as we know it and will be revisited many times throughout the franchise.

What you have been watching is the version of the series with digitally created new effects for the blu-ray and HD-DVD releases. Unlike with Star Wars, the released home videos were capable of letting you switch from original effects to new effects. Also sound could be switched. That Vulcan mountain had been initially seen in one of the 1980s movies. They, then digitally created it for this episode. Originally, the characters beamed down and walked around the “wall”. BTW, each season has credits in a different color. The first season opening and closing credits were in orange, the second in blue and the third in red.

You were correct btw, Spock would have died if he hadn't reproduced under normal circumstances. But his shock over having killed his best friend kind of shook him out of it, so these were abnormal circumstances. Normally that's exactly how it would work for a Vulcan. "Pon farr: An extreme physical and psychological imbalance every seven years requires a mating ritual or death can ensue." Edit: Wikipedia claims the fight can always be a substitute for the mating, but I think in this script that's not what was intended: "Every seven years, Vulcan males and females become aroused. If the normally calm and rational Vulcans do not mate with someone with whom they are empathically bonded they eventually enter Plak Tow, the blood fever, become violent, and finally die unless they mate with someone or engage in a ritual battle known as kal-if-fee." In any case Vulcans can have normal sex lives outside the Pon farr, but they're basically "in heat" every 7 years and HAVE to. ;)

An old Stonn (played by the same actor) gets a happy ending and able to spend his golden years with an unexpected person. That fight sequence and music gets imitated a lot, much like Kirk's fight with the Gorn. Vulcan is a mostly desert planet with limited water sources (which is why in the prior season it was noted that Spock/Vulcans have an inner eyelid to help protect their eyes from the sun). Their cities, though still having metal where useful/appropriate, are largely made of stone/rock, as would be the most logical material to build such structures from (though again some do use metal where more necessary/useful). They still retain some areas of ceremonial importance from the long past -- from many centuries to several thousand years in age -- and, ironic for a race so heavily invested in logic and science, still have strong throwbacks to quasi-mystical beliefs. (You guys will see hints/indicators of that if or when you get much further down the line into the movies and later ST series in the franchise.)

As long as you're mentioning (and boldfacing) Walter Koenig and Babylon 5, it's also worth noting that Koenig plays an occasionally-recurring character on Babylon 5.

Every year they would write original music for a few episodes and then reuse old music for the episodes that did not have specific original music specifically written. Amok Time of course had new music written and you will hear the fight music reused again and again but it works. My favorites for season two are Doomsday Machine which has fantastic new music and The Changling I think is the 3rd episode of season 2. Cheers great reaction btw

I enjoy your commentary while watching Star Trek for the first time. Also thank you for turning on the CC for us Star Trek fans that are old enough to have seen the original series. 🖖

Excellent classic episode. Your reaction was brilliant. Would you guys consider watching the original 70s series of Battlestar Galactica (assuming you haven't seen it before) - more classic sci-fi I think you'd enjoy.

I wouldn't mind seeing them reacting to 1970s Battlestar Galactica as long as they keep a safe distance from the two horrible seasons of "Buck Rogers in the 25th Century." Best to you-

So excited to see this as the next episode that you were reacting to! Loved your surprise at the turn of events throughout it. I've mentioned before about the influence that Trek had on the show Futurama. As Amok Time is one of the best Trek episodes, the Futurama parody of it called "Why Must I Be A Crustacean In Love?" is one of the great episodes of that show. If you've never seen it, I highly recommend it!

Make note about how much dialog Chekov gets in Season 2... it dwarfs anything Sulu gets, this was in large part due to George Takei making the first of many questionable career decisions and risking his spot on Star Trek by taking part in the filming of The Green Beret... which forced quite a few re-writes of episodes that were produced first.

Vulcan certainly has urban centers with futuristic tech, but it isn't completely covered with them like Coruscant. Lot of desert on this world with heat that might be uncomfortable even for sand people.
