Batman 1989 is Jack Nicholson's movie, come on. Why is Batman's name even on the title? lol. And I'm going to confess something, towards the end of the movie, i was rooting for the Joker and my brain was booing everytime Bruce was on screen hahaaaa. "Do i look like i'm joking?".

You have no idea, when this film first came out, BatMania was in full swing, you could not escape seeing merchandise on every shelf, toys, video games costumes and happy meals, every TV station was showing reruns of old Batman shows and MTV was playing Prince videos on constant rotation all based on the hype surrounding this one movie

Bruce didn't sleep upside down, he was using Inversion Boots. it's GREAT for back problems, as instead of gravity pushing down on you, the gravity is extending the back muscles and decompressing the spine.

Firstly, when the Joker is pretending that water is making him melt, that is from an extremely famous moment in The Wizard of Oz (which is a movie everyone should see). Secondly, You made me laugh when you put on the screen " I love it when movies do the thing". I mean, really, who doesn't love it when movies do the thing?

I agree with every word you said. I was six when my parents took me to see it. Honestly, I was probably too young to see it, but I'm happy that they took me. Because of that Batman has always been my favorite and that batmobile will always be my favorite one. And the music by Danny Elfman, nothing like it.

Jack Nicholson's Joker & Heath Ledger's are both very different interpretation of the character. It is never fair to compare them, it is apples and oranges. They are both incredible!

That’s actually a good analogy for Jack and Heath. Me personally I’m going with apples (obviously Jack) 😂. Since I’m a 90s baby, you would say I’m supposed to like Heath more but Jack gave me that animated series Joker. He had the second best Joker laugh. Heath just had the “woo, haha”, Jack had multiple laughs. But that doesn’t take away from Heath’s performance or version of the character. Because I loved that scene of him outside the hospital , confused about the detonator 😂😂. That gave me animated joker. and his constant lying about how he got his scars.

@@donnyouttheway4091 Let's talk about the science of joker laugh😄 the only person in this planet who can do a perfect laugh as a joker is Jack Nicholson, so real so natural, especially in the scene where he electrocuted the mob, he has a natural long breath, that's why the laughter sounds so good, that wheezing sound like people with asthma is so hard to do if you don't have that naturally(example 25:06), also listen to the laugh after joker push batman and vicki vale off the building, it's so f$&king delicious and satisfying to listen to especially if you listen through earphones, so haunting and joyful, sorry to say but Heath ledger failed at that, except Joaquin Phoenix, the rest of them are so fake and forceful, they have to scream to get the joker's laugh, for example Mark Hamill, quite cringe and anoying actually, the laugh was perfectly illustrated by Nicholson by having a set of laughs that range from maniacal and gleefully wild to dark and deeply threatening that sounds natural
@merlith4650
@merlith4650 9 ай бұрын
Heath does a great performance, but overall i'd argue Jack's Joker is the better "joker". his characterization, story, etc is more comic-accurate and more reflective of who the Joker actually is. The later jokers are insane and wear clown makeup, but beyond that they don't really lean into the clown gimmick of the character. The plans and motivations of Heath Ledger's Joker for instance is more akin to the villain Anarky. whereas the 1989 Joker actually has his trademark laughing gas that makes people laugh to their deaths. he clowns around while killing and creating chaos just for the sake of it. all the while using all sorts of goofy toys and gadgets that turn out to be either harmless or deadly. he constantly cracks jokes and punchlines, even in the middle of being beat up by Batman. Jack Nicholson's Joker is the most actual "joker" out off all the live action adaptions.

Tim Burton was always more interested in the 'monster' or 'freak' than the hero. That becomes more apparent the the sequels. Let me just say, McDonald's was not happy having made the deal for toys and then the Penguin hit the screen.

Batman is obsessed with bats because a) when he was a little kid he fell through a hole into the batcave, and a thousand bats shrieked around him (total trauma), and b) when he was deciding what he was going to look like as a vigilante, since criminals are “a superstitious, cowardly lot”, what could strike terror in their hearts - then a bat crashed through the window, and he said that’s it. Also, the guy who killed his parents was a common criminal called Joe Chill, the thing of him being Jack was just for this movie.

"Ever dance with the Devil in the pale Moon light?" This will always be my favorite Batman and Joker, after the TV show this was the first that took it to a dark place. Obviously Heath Ledger took it darker but this balanced the comic feel and the humor with the tragedy and nature of the story.

The soundtrack of this film is indeed iconic but the other Batman movies do have their own soundtracks its just that Danny Elfman's score for this film is so beloved that for many people it's the definitive theme of Batman. If your a 2000s kid like me then you most likely would've played the Lego Batman game which used the soundtrack of this film. The theme was also for the intro of Batman Animated Series from the 1990s as well but that show had it's own amazing music that for many is on the level level as Elfman's music. 1:05 Gotham started out as basically Chicago, New York (Batman's first few comics took place in an unnamed city) but overtime the city formed it's own personality becoming a gothic revival wonderland with heavy art deco and timeless elements like hybrid of old meets new tech, fashion, vehicles etc. This film with the art direction created by the amazing Anton Furst who gave Gotham it's iconic look in this film later inspired the comics which featured a storyline where a villain blew up buildings across Gotham revealing the older Gothic Revival buildings underneath making Gotham closer to what we see in the Burton films. Then in 1992 we had the Batman Animated Series that went more for a timeless Art Deco look dubbed Dark Deco. The series is set in the early 1990s but the city, signs, and adverts all look like they're from the 1930s. People drive around in 1930/1940s inspired cars with fashion from the time period, Police use blimps to overview the city yet there's 1990s tech from computers to walkman devices etc. Then you have Metropolis home of Superman which in film is often just depicted as New York or a generic modern day America City. But in the Superman Animated Series they went for an Art Deco 1950s city of tomorrow look with retro 1950s futuristic looking cars to Art Deco everywhere. Hopefully James Gunn pulls from this for his Superman film as I can't stand when Metropolis is just a boring everyday city, same with Gotham in the Nolan films, love the Nolan Trilogy but his Gotham was basically just Chicago.

Writer Frank Miller has said: "Metropolis is New York City in the middle of the day, while Gotham is New York City at midnight". Canonically, Gotham is supposed to be located in the state of New Jersey- it's actually around were Newark NJ is in real life. Christopher Nolan's trilogy re-imagined Gotham as being more like the city of Chicago.

1st - I LOVE this movie. It's top-10, IMO. It's the only one in my top-10 that I can't really understand why I love it so much, I just do. Just so many lines that resonate with me "No shit... it was all over the pavement" "Hey Eckhardt! Think about the future!" "Hello, legs" "Oh, and uh... give Knox a grant." "You know why rich people are weird? Because they can afford to be." "Ever dance with the devil in the pale moonlight?" "It's Japanese." "How do you know that?" "Because I bought it in Japan." "You wanna get nuts? C'MON! LET'S GET NUTS!" I don't know why, what about the dialogue is so good (the writing? The delivery?) but I love everything about this movie. 2 - As far as "The Joker": sure, it's his origin more than Batman's, but they are mirrors to each other, and the movie even explicitly states that they created each other. I think it works on both levels (similar to Dexter's season 1, how learning about Brian reveals things about Dexter too.) 3 - Fantastic music, iconic theme song. Inspired/influenced the legendary "Batman: The Animated Series" that you should definitely check out. (The first 3 seasons; the 4th has a whole new team, so it's not the same other than the people who owned the rights.) It's long, but I'd at least recommend checking out a handful of episodes, like "Almost Got 'Im" (s01e35) and "Heart of Ice" (s01e03). 4 - I'm not a huge Batman fan, but the Batman movies/tv universe is full of great stuff. "Batman and Robin" is terrible, but even the oft-maligned "Batman Forever" is at least *interesting* and weird, even if it's not necessarily good. (Great soundtrack too; underrated soundtrack.) And I'm no fan of the Burt Ward/Adam West Batman show, but something about the movie (Batman '66) really worked with me; it's stupid and camp and silly and so so stupid in the way "Batman and Robin" wanted to be. I definitely recommend "Batman '66". (Think silly slapshit like "Airplane" or "Naked Gun" but Batman. It's SO dumb. I love it.)

In the comics Gotham City is depicted as being in New Jersey. Basically you are suppose to get a New York feel because that is where most of the comic companies were located in the 1930s and 1940s. Some people like to say Chicago because honestly Chicago was created as a copy of New York City and the architecture has that Gotham feel. We you add Superman's Metropolis into it it gets complicated but that was created around NYC also. NYC was just the model for all the new comics in the early 20th century. The Batman story is based around an orphan from a rich family. Not so much in the very beginning but this became the standard. When Marvel made Iron Man the real life example was Howard Hughes so the rich guy with a secret identity fighting crime became a standard in early comics. This movie was the first in the modern movies to feature Batman. This was the standard set until Christopher Nolan came along. Before this there were TV movies based off a TV show that was more camp. Before that Batman was serialized in radio and movie shorts as entertainment between larger movies. Everything comes from the comics from 1939. Batman is the creation of Bob Kane and Bill Finger who pulled the character from Zorro and the Phantom as well as Leonardo da Vinci's sketch of an ornithopter that inpired Bob Kane. The Joker's creation is a little more disputed in actual credit and because of that the origin story has always been different. Various writers keep changing the story as an honor to the character's insanity. Even when the Joker talks his own description of his origin is different.

9:42 his name is Alfred Pennyworth. He's british, and has been the butler and manservant of the Waynes since Bruce was a little kid. As a side note, an old british term for butler is... batman. So, in a way, Alfred is Batman's batman. Which is fun, because I'm pretty sure that Bob Kane, Batman's creator, didn't know that at all.

Yes, Gotham City is inspired by New York. So is Metropolis (the city where Superman lives) One of the people writing the comics in the 1970's & 80's put it perfectly.. "Gotham City is New York below 14th street at night (generally a BAD area to be in at night at the time)... Metropolis is New York above 14th Street (the area where most of the tourist spots are) during the day."

The fact that Batman has less screen time than the Joker is a good move on behalf of Burton so that the hero does not spend so much time on screen (as in the most recent Batman movies) and become somehow tiring. This way, appearing and disappearing out of the blue (or black) makes his entrances way cooler and more impacting, as I see it.

By the way, Bruce's family were from nobility prior to the founding of the United States in the same vein as Lord Baltimore. They founded Gotham City and have pretty much owned the entire place in one way or another since the beginning, but the land they built on is quite literally cursed by some very powerful beings until it is the city itself became a straight up sapient malicious supernatural aura, choosing various "avatars" to express "her" will from people she is fond of or feels a kind of kinship to. Bruce Wayne and the Joker are her favorite children, but Pamela Isley aka Poison Ivy is another, as is Harvey Dent; all of whom are "archetypes" creating a modern day mythology she feeds off of. This is also why Joker never really dies. A Mother of Madness, if you will, who even in the depths of her violent insanity still loves her "children". In short, a supernatural abusive parent that can't control herself or what she enjoys. Kind of terrifying in a Lovecraftian fashion.

You're half right about Gotham being literally cursed. It was a group of cultists that did it, not the powerful beings that they worshipped. Guess that explains why Gotham's always crime ridden and has a history of irredeemable villains keep escaping Blackgate and Arkham to cause more chaotic death over and over.

Joker killing Batman's parents was a fabrication of this movie which I don't hate btw but the original criminal was named Joe Chill. Unrelated Fun Fact: Prince was asked to make one song for the movie, when he learned it was a Batman movie, he made an entire album because he was a huge Batman fan.

"Why Bats?" Depends. In the original comics it was just because it was a cool theme; while trying to think of his outfit, a bat flies into Bruce's office and he's like "That's a good image." In later versions, popularized by Nolan's movies, the story is that Bruce Wayne had a phobia of bats as a kid. In becoming a vigilante he decides to embody fear itself for his enemies, by first conquering his own fear. As he puts it, "Bats frighten me; it's time my enemies shared my dread."

gotham is NY inspired, but NYC actually also exists within the DC universe and is a separate city from gotham. on maps, it's implied gotham is in NJ. so it's an imaginary city that's almost as big as NYC, but in NJ, and darker.

The Jokers "Smile" was because of the Broken Glass (It Severed his Nerves and Muscles).. the Rest was because of the "Bath". Harvey Dent (in the Comics) became "Two-Face" because during a trial, Boss Maroney threw Acid at him, only hitting half his face. He was my favorite Batman villain. Bruce's BAT are a Symbol, something nocturnal and scary that could make him appear more menacing. He Feared Bats and so he made criminals share his fear.

You asked which other Batman movies you should watch. In my opinion, you should watch the sequel to this film (which was also directed by Tim Burton): Batman Returns (1992). After that, you're fine to skip to more modern takes on the character. Definitely Christopher Nolan's trilogy: Batman Begins (2005) , The Dark Knight (2008, where Katie Holmes was replaced by Maggie Gyllenhaal) [it's even better if you see Jerry Maguire (1996) first ], and The Dark Knight Rises (2012). Aside from that, The Joker (2019) and Batman (2022) were well received, but I haven't seen them so can't offer an opinion. And Batman also shows up in some of the modern DC-Universe movies, but it's better to watch those (or not) as part of that series, which starts with a Superman film, Man of Steel (2013) -- but even that is better to wait to watch until after you see the original movies starring Christopher Reeve, Superman: The Movie (1978) and Superman II (1980). Those can seem somewhat dated, but were pretty much the first modern superhero movies.

That contraption that Bruce was in was an actual excercise machine where people would hang upside down. I don't think they actually worked. But of course it was also supposed to be a snickering nod to him being Batman, but he wasn't actually trying to be, or think he was a bat.

This Joker was more akin to the comic book Joker. He had his madness, he had his jokes, and he had the madness within the jokes. The line "I make art until someone dies from it" is not necessarily referring to what he did to the girl, it's about his art of the joke. There is a commentary moment, I think, where it is mentioned that the money he is dumping on the crowd is not real cash, but "Joker Bucks" his face on the one dollar bill..... A joke he mentioned. This is overshadowed by the even larger joke of using Gotham's greed to lure the people in (with fake money) only to kill them with SmileX gas. It actually IS a prank worthy of an intelligent psycho. Throughout all of this film Jack Nicholson is chewing the scenery and making his character larger than life, bringing the comic book villain to life. It's pretty damned impressive when I watch it these days. This film also inspired the art and tone that went into Batman: The Animated Series just a few years later. Darker, steampunk Gotham where Batman could flourish.

Great Reaction.... Vision and Direction by Tim Burton, Music by Prince, Excellent Conbination.... So Many other performances, Michael Keaton, Jack Nicholson, Kim Basinger..... I Enjoy how the Tim Burton "Batman" and "Batman Returns" have the comic book Vibe; Gritty balanced with over-the-top Comedy..... This is the only storyline that has Jack/Joker Kill Bruce's Parents, in the comics and other movies they were killed by Joe Chill..... Batman/Bruce was scared by bats as a child, so as a way to face his fear, he shares his fear with Villians.....

@@amandamiquilena Also the DC Universe seems to do alot better character development on it's Villians..... Probably cause they know you are gonna be exposed to the hero over the long run (it is the Hero's series) so they concentrate more on the Villian in the one/two movies that Villian is in....... The Batman Movies from the 1990's are kinda all over the place cause they had different writers/directors, who wanted to focus/tell different stories from the 50 years of comic books.... The Dark Knight Trilogy (Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises) by Christopher Nolan was designed as a trilogy so the story flows through all 3 movies, especially since it had same team through the whole triliogy..... And it has more of a real world feel, not a comic book feel...... I Still Love it.....
