Here is my reaction to the 1976 horror film Carrie
First time watching Carrie (1976) Reaction.
In this chilling adaptation of Stephen King's horror novel, withdrawn and sensitive teen Carrie White faces taunting from classmates at school and abuse from her fanatically pious mother at home. When strange occurrences start happening around Carrie, she begins to suspect that she has supernatural powers. Invited to the prom by the empathetic Tommy Ross, Carrie tries to let her guard down, but things eventually take a dark and violent turn.

Carrie is one of the few horror films to be nominated for multiple Academy Awards. Spacek and Laurie both received nominations for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress. Well deserved! They were both fantastic here!

I always felt bad for Sue. She felt guilty for bullying Carrie, tried to do something nice for her, and it ended in tragedy. Her boyfriend, friends, and so many others, dead. I can't even imagine how they legitimately think she's going to just move on.

Yeah Tommy, gym teacher and Sue were genuine people. Tommy was actually starting to like her. But that's happens when you push people. Like Rambo said "when you're pushed killing is easy as breathing. That's a fact

#RIP Piper Laurie(Carrie's Mom who died in 2023). Sissy Spacek worked as a set dresser with her future husband on DePalma's film Phantom of the Paradise and had acted previously so she called him to see if she could audition. He said yes but he thought he chose someone but when she came by dressed poorly, acting Carrie out of the park she landed the role. That was not a Jesus but a St. Sebastian statue. During the dinner scene before prom, the picture of The Last Supper was prominent. The gym teacher Betty Buckley this was her first film role but she does Broadway and other horror like The Happening. Norma(PJ Soles) was in the original Halloween and was really injured when she was sprayed by the hose injuring her left eardrum so her screams were real and left in the film. The character of Carrie was based on two girls that Stephen King knew growing up but put the various traits into one and added a supernatural element. Sue's mom(Priscilla Pointer) is her real mom! Tommy(William Katt) of tvs The Greatest American hero and film did die by the bucket according to the book since they were made from steel. DePalma got Carrie by doing the horror film SISTERS with Margot Kidder and followed Carrie with The Fury another telekinesis film based on a series of 4 John Farris books about psychic twins(Non related) staring Amy Irving! Carrie the telefilm is closer to the novel than the remake with Chloe Grace Moretz. There is also a sequel Carrie 2: The Rage which brings back the Sue Snell character. The boy who fell off his bike was Cameron Depalma the director's nephew. In the book, it states that Carrie's female cousin also has the same power so that it must be part of the DNA that certain females in her hereditary line get. Piper Laurie would star in another horror film called RUBY about a possessed daughter following the success of Carrie. This was not John Travolta's first film but The Devil's Rain was but he would star again in Blow Out with Nancy Allen(Chris). Other than Blow Out, Nancy Allen who would marry/divorce Depalma did the mystery/slasher Dressed to Kill for him. Although Sissy was nominated for Best Actress and did not win(Faye Dunaway ,Network) she would win Best Actress in Coal Miner's Daughter. The book and film are very different since people at the prom survive and Carrie kills townspeople and destroys businesses which eventually brings in a government commission to investigate called the White Commission. Fun facts: the bucket scene at the prom took 3 days of a 10 day shoot and studios thought it was ridiculous of DePalma for being such a perfectionist. This film was a horror and not supposed to do well but in today's box office it made almost 100 million! Both Depalma and George Lucas(Star Wars) were casting their films at the same time so people like Carrie Fischer and Mark Hamill were reading for Carrie and Amy Irving and William Katt for Star Wars. Can you imagine the actors being switched? Hope the context helps! King actually threw out Carrie in the trash but his wife Tabitha rescued it and encouraged him to finish it. He did and a publisher bought it and later the film rights were sold and the rest is history. The line regarding Carrie's dress: I knew it would be Red was an ad lib by Laurie which was left in since she was picturing what the character would think not what was written in the script.

The next year, John Travolta got his first Academy Award nomination for Saturday Night Fever. Sissy grew up in a town close to mine and our High School’s played football against each other for years. Betty Buckley is from Ft. Worth, about 3-4 hours away from where Sissy and I grew up. Amy Irvin became the first Mrs. Steven Spielberg and had their son, Max. Later on after Spielberg married Kate Kapshaw that he met doing Raider: Temple of Doom. Then he did “Who Framed Roger Rabbit”. Kathleen Turner had that sultry voice of the slinky beauty of Jessica Rabbit (she was also big pregnant at the time, so it was perfect for her to do voice over work!) But it was Spielberg’s ex-wife, Amy Irvin, who sang the part that Jessica sang at the night club.

I never understand why everyone thinks Sue's setting Carrie up. In the book as she's walking away all the hydrants explode so when the firetrucks get there they won't be any water to put the fire out. "That sound" was first used in "Psycho", 1960.

I think Carrie brought the house down on herself (and her dead mother) as an act of final suicide. The last "jump scare" was wild, when you consider watching this when it first came out in a full film theatre - believe me.
@jimhaggard7436
@jimhaggard7436 7 ай бұрын
I don’t think Carrie was consciously thinking of suicide, but the realization of matricide and the frustration of not being able to free her mother’s impaled hand caused her to lash out (and let a primal scream) and let her powers get out of control one last time, echoing around the house and destroying it around her and her mom’s body.

Well said. I agree with your comment. Thanks. By the way, I wish he would have shown Chris' full response further when the teacher slapped her for saying, "stick 'em up your a**" - and then the teacher shakes her more harshly, and Chris says, "you B****!"@@jimhaggard7436

Everyone wasn’t laughing at Carrie when the bucket of blood landed on her. She was so traumatized from her mother and bullies that it tipped her over the edge, especially hearing her mother’s voice in her head. She killed all those people for nothing. Sad tragedy.

The part when the house collapse it is supposed to be a hail of stones she had brought down when she was little. But it is only portrayed in the book and the 2002 remake and the 2013 remake. But because of the special effects they were able to do back then, it was clearly impossible. So it just shows that she destroys the whole house.

I saw this movie at the drive in when it came out. I was 12. It wasn’t until MANY years later that I understood what dirty pillows were. 😅 The book is very short and very, very different than his other books. It’s one of my favorites though because it’s so different than Stephen King’s writing style.

Great eye on catching the incredible shot at the prom done in one take. It took an entire day to stage and shoot that one shot. You should definitely check out some other Brian De Palma films, like Dressed to Kill and Blow Out. Great thrillers, stylishly directed. De Palma was very influenced by Alfred Hitchcock and pays homage to his films a lot. De Palma is also noted for using split screen and split diopter shots.

Back then it was widely believed you should cover up with blankets & sweat out a fever. Turns out that can cause the fever to go too high & the patient can go into convulsions & possibly die. Likewise, along with many other old wives tales, it was also widely believed back then, that slapping a person, was the quickest, most effective way to bring someone out of hysterics. It wasn't done with cruel intentions, it was just meant to "quickly get their attention" so whatever was causing the trauma, could be dealt with. And if you think about it - if most people believed that back then, then getting slapped when you were in hysterics, might not feel great, but at least you'd already have some kind of understanding of why that was being done. But yeah. For those that had never heard that, or who just didn't necessarily believe that was the best way to go, they'd be even more traumatized. That figurine is not Jesus. It's a catholic martyr named St. Sebastian. So her mom is actually terrifying her with, & having her worship, a martyr, with Carrie probably thinking it's meant to be Jesus. Which just corrupts the whole message of the gospel. It is twisted. The teacher asking the girls about their boyfriends, & making Chris repeat it, was specifically to put them on the spot. They get a lot of "strength" or boldness, from their popularity, & status from their boyfriends. So the teacher was attempting to say without saying it, 1. you're privileged to even be able to date, & to have a boyfriend, & 2. "you wouldn't be this bold without your boyfriend's, therefore you're nothing without them", even though the boyfriends weren't initially directly related to what was going on. The teacher knew who they dated. There's a marked difference between Billy & Tommy, in their motivation & empathy. She also knew Chris Hargensen especially didn't have a particularly classy boyfriend in Billy. So she was trying to embarrass her a bit. The result of this tactic, is both Sue Snell, & Chris Hargensen involve their boyfriends in the whole fiasco after this. Sue for good. Chris for evil.

Fun facts: 1. Sue and the mother are real life mother and daughter. 2. A lot of major actors in this film made it in this film because they were not chosen for Star Wars. The director of Carrie just happened to pop in on George Lucas's auditioning ppl and George let him stay. Imagine the actors switched... hard to see right?

Chris and Billy are my favorite. I like when the teacher and Billy slap Chris. And when the teacher dies and when the car rolls and explodes and the mother dying. Some of my favorite scenes. The mother was excited she was going to die. She'd been preparing herself all her life for this moment.

One commenter pointed out that audiences are now so used to being tricked by movies (with all their twists, turns, and third act reveals) that they assume the movie is trying to trick us into thinking Sue and Tommy aren't up to anything. Only, in the end, it'll turn out they were setting Carrie up all along. Because that's how a lot of movies work now.

1. Stephen King threw this book away, but his wife took it out and told him to send it in. It's the first one that sold to a legitimate publisher that wasn't adult pulp and the first to be adapted into a movie. 2. Back then teachers were allowed to strike a student if warranted. (Class of 1979) 3. Another religious nut bag can be found in King's "The Mist". 4. Norma/PJ Soles 😍 Al long as I have a face....😋 (she has to ace that ballcap) 5. Sue, Tommy and Miss Collins really were trying to help Carrie. I read the book. 6. If Billy's a high school student, so am I. 7. Margaret's crucifixion pose is the same as the St. Sabastian. 8. Both Sissie and Piper Lauri were nominated for Acadamy Awards, but horror didn't get the love back then. 9. The only thing good in the second LOSER remake is Carrie/Chloe Grace Moretz could get it. (King remakes are 0/10) Including "IT" and "The Stand".
