I love this movie as it seems at first its the typical "follow your dreams," but instead it develops more in depth that it's fine to have aspirations, but you should never let it replace or get in between your family. Sometimes you have to sacrifice your dreams too, as you can end up missing out on the family and things you have in front of you.
@BelBelle468
@BelBelle468 Жыл бұрын
It’s cuz western ideology advocates for individualism, which would be the “follow your dreams”. But the culture associated with PoC, like Asia, Africa, and Mexico/South America, tend to be more collectivism and family based. Hence, when movies like these come out, they tend to subscribe to the mentality of family and identity within your culture and family and family friends. Most stories about western culture is about breaking tradition, going off on your own, and making your own family, whereas there’s more focus on appreciating/coming together/sticking with family (and family friend groups).

@@BelBelle468 I actually think it's more interesting that while the story is definitely under the ideology of family and it's importance, it also makes a point to say that it's not fair to completely do the opposite by not allowing your own happiness for the sake of your family. It's good to understand the balance between the two. His family was wrong to hurt him like that and drove him away, while the other characters were wrong to betray their family for their own gain. You can try your best for your family without making yourself miserable and that family goes both ways, both sides have to put effort into compromise and understanding each other.
@JorgensZelda
@JorgensZelda 6 ай бұрын
@@BelBelle468 I mean, yeah, family is great, unless your family hurts you and crushes your individuality to force you into the mold they made for you. This movie is very much about finding a balance and healing your family and yourself. But, if your family can't be healed without you destroying yourself, is no bueno. Luckily, his family was able to find balance as well.
@AliceBunny05
@AliceBunny05 29 күн бұрын
@@JorgensZeldayeah, I think some people who are biased against the individuality structure miss this in favor of highlighting how the movie approves of what they think is right. the movie isn't just about sacrificing your own dreams or aspirations, it's about finding a balance between having a healthy relationship with your family and also having your own aspirations. the movies message is valuable but we need to remember that not everyone is lucky enough to have a family that eventually comes to their senses like miguel's. both him and his family have to undergo a change in mindset, you cannot have this outcome if your family is unwilling to meet you in the middle like his does. collective mentality and individual mentality are both harmful when used alone or at their extremes. one suppresses self expression, making decisions for yourself, and ultimately leading a life you're satisfied with. the other can rob you of important bonds, inspire selfishness and do more harm to everyone involved than you may realize. neither of these mentalities should be used by themselves, we have many real world examples of just how dangerous or toxic things get when a society heavily leans towards only one of these modalities.

Once you decide on Héctor being the actual grandfather, the idea that Cruz somehow had his guitar, the famous guitar without the mention of it belonging to a friend or anything, it's not that far of a leap to make. Most of the time they just say as many as the most out there sounding plot guesses and sometimes they end up right lol But also it's a Disney movie and if you have seen a lot of Disney or just movies in general, it's pretty reasonable to guess that Hector was the actual granddad And hector supposedly dies from "food" poisoning... They clearly had a big falling out. It's really not hard to guess all the twists. Don't get me wrong, this became my favourite Disney movie when I saw it, I don't think being able to predict some of this is bad, it means that the plot threads make sense.

A very nice subtle touch with this movie, is the many ways that a song can be interpreted. “Remember me” Has such a dramatic change to it when you first hear it from Ernesto, and when you hear how it’s supposed to be played by Hector. With Dela Cruz the song is a happy little bouncy song, of him talking about his latest. lover. Just a single night together and then he’s off again. But suddenly, when you hear it from Hector. It’s a song from a father, telling his daughter that he loves them, and that he’ll be with them as soon as he can. It’s like a song that you would sing to your kid before you go off to work.

Man this is one of my favourite disney films of the modern era. Such an emotional movie, and if you understand, or are learning to understand the culture, and language, it's even more beautiful. The fact that everyone in the land of the dead is the same age as when they died is a great touch, but sad when you remember the little kids they also have and shown there (like the little girl and her mum crossing the bridge) the songs are amazing as well of course, and the film was that big of a hit, they even did a live concert at the Hollywood bowl. This movie is always a tear jerker, but even the concert got me going as well haha

The ending with Coco where she sings is so clever. Of course it's very emotional but it shows something bittersweet. The way music is one of the last things you forget when you have Alzheimers or Dementia. There are many, many real live exaples (if you want to see them and cry while you're at it search for "Alzheimers balarina swan lake" or "Alzheimers moonlight sonata"). And sometimes it even brings back other memories for a short time, like it did for Coco, when she recognised Elena and knew about her Papá.

A little context I think might help into why all of their relatives seemed so "young" when they died (might not apply to all Mexico tho) but in my case, my great grandparents died relatively "young" and also I didn't even get to meet one of my grandparents because she passed away when my father was young and you could say I'm more or less on Miguel's parents age group. Also Mexico's Revolution was not that long ago, that might also have something to do with it. And also, life span of people has increased rapidly in recent years, but I can guess more or less the time period in which Miguel's relatives (from Imelda's time) lived and many people back then might have lived until 40 or 50 tops, if you had great genes. So I guess I didn't find it that strange that Miguel's relatives looked more on the younger side in the after life compared to Mama Coco.

Pixar really went out of their way to make sure the Mexican cultural representation was done correctly. They even completely rewrote the movie's story when they realized their original concept completely went against the themes and ideas of Dia de Muertos. But possibly my favorite thing they did was they made sure every single cast member was of Latin American descent and was fluent in both English and Spanish. That way they didn't have to change a single cast member when they made the Spanish-language version.

Being Mexican American, this movie perfectly captures my culture and preparations for El Dia De Los Muertos (The Day Of The Dead). How we decorate the ofrendas, the music, the lore behind the celebration, everything. What makes this movie so special to me is the concept of family. On my family's ofrenda, one of the pictures we put up is of my paternal grandfather Marcelino. He died when I was in 8th grade (2005) and even now in 2023, it messes me up with emotion. Every day, I wish I could see him face-to-face one last time, give him a big hug and tell him how much I love and miss him. 😢😢😢😢 Also, a slap from a sandal or chancla hurts, specifically on bare skin. That's why they're so feared in Mexican culture, especially when they're wielded by an elder.

Imelda wanted to forget her husband cuz he chose music over family, and she had to keep them financially afloat while caring for a daughter. The grandmother wanted to forget music cuz she learned from her grandmother that it destroyed the family and she wanted to protect her mother who lost her father to music. And of course, Migel didn’t care about being remembered so long as he could do what he wanted. aaAAAAAAaaa 10:05 Yeah...even his dad was like MAMÁ WAIT 23:55 heh explained the area 37:05 ? why would they see each other? Oh! like before he died or outside of Dia 39:50 Rubato; when they show De la Cruz with the book or page its like-- well, that's certainly not how he's sung it 46:19 aaa if Miguel has just longer arms or faster AAH 52:00 that's gotta be so comforting to finally be able to clear him (either what they were, or the photo but)

I like that guy saying "what did I miss?" and I always just like to say "well we just saw the most popular singer show his true colors as he tries to kill an child and then comes back like it never happened only to then get thrown out by a giant cat spirit to the scumbag he is and now his reputation and career is destroyed forever" I feel like his mansion/palace is going to get demolished immediately too also I can imagine someone who's giving Miguel a record deal from someone for his singing and he just denies it because he does not want to repeat what Hector and Ernesto did, leave his family.

I just realized that Hector must have looked up his wife in the afterlife. She said, "How many times must I turn you away?" But, in life, she didn't turn him away.

Dante the dog, named after a certain italian poet, is a xoloitzcuintle - a breed that goes back to the Aztec civilization and that was traditionally depicted as a psychopomp or guide to the afterlife. The story goes, they were created by the god of death Xolotl out of the bone of life and given to man as a gift with the instruction to protect and care for them in life, and they would guide spirits back home to the afterworld after death.

Dementia, or Alzheimer's is such a horrible disease. My good friend's Mother died of it, and I was with her when her Mother forget who she was the first time. It was devastating to her. So when Coco, at the end looked at her daughter and remembered her, and her name, that was the best gift she could receive. So she had a better memory of her Mother, and know that she still knew who she was and loved her. That is one of the worst parts of that disease. It taints your memories of them so that it changes how you remember them. This movie makes me cry every time, at the end.

I think the reason Mama Imelda and all the others look relatively young, 50-60, is because the life expectancy back then was much younger, where as, during Miguel's time, it was a more modern era, so Mama Coco lived longer, into her 80's. Hector looks so young because he would have died in his early 30s or mid 20s.

Something to notice in this movie that some people don’t catch… is that throughout the movie Hector is barefoot… and at the end he’s wearing shoes, his family owns a shoe shop…since Hector is wearing shoes at the end of the movie… it shows that he’s been accepted into the family. ❤

I've seen a lot of first time reactions to this movie and this was the first to accurately predict all the twists before they happened. I loved the "I bet de la Cruz killed hector" early on followed by "I was joking That!" At the reveal. I did however find it annoying that the editing kept cutting people off midsentence.

I just wanna say that this was an amazing reaction! Also, it’s very likely Imelda died relatively young since the life expectancy(? was quite low arround the time she may have lived (end of the XIX century/beginning of the XX century), it was around 30, so she probably died when she was about 40 to 50, so not really that old!

I wondered too why the family seemed to be mostly young looking despite likely dying at a old age. But my theory is that because of the photos the living family uses, those dead simply pick the style to match it so there isn't confusion that it is in fact them. Kinda like how your driver's license or passport, your encouraged to wear a simple style you usually have on so it isn't harder to verify. Like I have long hair and glasses. So I always need to wear my glasses for photos so it doesn't confuse people but I wear my hair up usually for photos since I don't wear it down often. It sounds silly but I did have someone at work stop me one day because they thought I wasn't allowed in a area (I work in a nursing home) just because they had never seen me with my hair down before

A theory I had about why Coco looks how she was when she died is that, once in the land of the dead, they age backwards until they reach around 30-50ish. She just died, so she still looks like how she was when she was alive, but won't be like that for eternity. Idk if it's accurate at all, lol, but it's what I go with

I'm late but remember when Hector was going to go get a guitar for Miguel, they went to an area where those that are forgotten go to. Hector had been forgotten thus isn't in the part where it's thriving, where those that are remembered are. Mama Imelda and the rest wouldn't have encountered him on a daily, because like in life and death they forgot him. He's never been able to cross over to even see the rest of the family.

I think part of what determines what they look like in the afterlife if the photo that is used to remember them? Maybe? That was my guess watching it anyway.

It was actually Coco who ripped the picture of her father probably when she was too young to realize what that meant to keep a piece of him around so she wouldn’t forget him. Mama Imelda more likely is the one who folded the picture so the guitar wasn’t visible and put it in a fitting frame. It’s implied by the sophistication of folding the picture that it was done by an adult so, the mothers part vs ripping a piece off was done by a kid, so Coco did that - so there wasn’t actually malice. I also think Mama Imelda didn’t “ban” music in her house but it was just hard and sad to hear music after her husband left because it was a hurtful reminder so of course she wouldn’t want any musicians in the family and everyone else just didn’t play music around her in an effort to not hurt her feelings which eventually was turned to the extreme.
