The doctor is like the folks watching reaction videos. He’s already seen everything. But to see the interest and joy of a person seeing things for the first time renews that feeling when it was new to you. As the season unfolds you will learn more about the doctor and why this regeneration is thewayheis.

The character of Rose Tyler was originally coded to be poor working class. She lives in a council flat on an estate (goverment housing in a housing project) and dresses in discount fashion (think trendiest clothes in wall-mart.) The velcro trainers are deliberately off trend as they are unbranded versions of the trainers kids had to wear to school when they coulden't afford cool trainers. A lot of it gets lost. Billie piper is well spoken and looks good in practically anything But i'm impressed at your eye for the nuance. It's the kind of media literacy that makes it worth subscribing and elevates this chanel above the average.

dont now i am from lower middle class in a small town and 2005 i was the same age and .. all girls looked like that it was really the fashion also i think in my school just no one did wear brands ... it seems i was lucky to live in a place everyone thought brands are expensive crap so everyone wore the cheaper stuff that just looked cool no considering the brands xD we were bullied and mocked alot in school but never in my life for offbrand or stuff xD i also think its a myth that everyone whos wellspoken wears brands ... alot wellspoken people are smart enought to understand that brands are just more expensive same crap then cheap stuff xD you can be a cheap heck and also have proper language :) so for me rose always was the lower workerclass girl and she had clothes that reminded me of that. i found it honestly refreshing they did not give her some lower class movie accent because in real life i never found anyone speak like that xD

I'm sad you cut the last conversation between The Doctor and Rose where he talks about how everything that seems permanent like the ground and the earth will all eventually die, followed by The Doctor opening up about his planet being gone for the first time. It's a really impactful scene and the main reason I still find this episode such a great one to rewatch.

Your comment about the TARDIS being pieced together from bits of scrap is really in point. The designers wanted ot to feel overgrown considering after the War The Doctor no longer had any of his people to help get it repaired so hes just had to bodge it all together with scrap hes picked up on his travels

When Russell T. Davies (the series showrunner) brought Doctor Who back, he didn’t want the series bogged down with all of the lore of the previous 26 seasons! So he decided not to feature the Doctor’s race, the Time Lords, and concocted the idea of the Doctor being involved in a Time War which his people lost (so they couldn’t figure in the show!) Add to that, the Doctor being the only survivor allows the audience to see an alien who was once a warrior, making the slow transformation into the old Doctor again (the Doctor before the Time War), and that change happens through him meeting Rose! In the classic series, the Doctor had a love/hate relationship with his own kind. Sometimes the Doctor would be sent on a mission by the Time Lords, and he would do it reluctantly but knew he could never refuse them! The Time Lords were just a race of people who had mastered time but didn’t do anything with it. All they did was look and observe, and they stood by their policy of non intervention in the affairs of other races. The Doctor, on the other hand, wanted to explore the universe and so stole a TARDIS to do just that! Unfortunately, he didn’t really know all the ins and outs of flying the TARDIS, so he had no idea where he would end up next! The TARDIS has a broken chameleon circuit which, when working, is supposed to change the outer shell of it, so if the Doctor landed in Rome, it could look like a Roman column and not stick out! But because the chameleon circuit got stuck after the TARDIS imitated a 1950’s London Police Box in 1963, it has remained like that ever since!

11:35 In this possible future Time Lords are ancient legendary figures. More than likely this is due to the Doctor’s adventures throughout time and space. The Tree lady was more in awe of the Doctor than in lust. Imagine meeting a member of King Arthur’s round table and finding out they need help to save the day. Who of us wouldn’t step up to help?

De remember this show is “family viewing” so it has to be a mix of keeping adults involved while being kid-friendly …so some compromises do get made a little, and the plot/setup has to reflect that…hence the teacher/student relationship. Good points on that the companions help ground him. Still early days, will be interested to see what you make of episodes…erm…8 and 9, i think it is. Thank you both for your video and interesting thoughts - and excellent insight!

When Cassandra says 'when i was a little boy' they're just saying she's trans; it's not meant to be related to anything else, that was just the most they could include back in 2005 (compare it to the recent christmas specials that just aired, when they've had trans characters as prominent characters in the story who also talk about it/it's a main part of the story for the first time)

Really enjoying your views on DW. Just a reminder that DW is a family TV show which some 'fans' forget. So it's interesting they snuck in some social commentary on wealth, privilege, race and class. I watched it live when it was broadcast in 2005 with my young children. It was broadcast around 7pm in the evening. As it's before the watershed (9pm) it limits what can be shown in terms of language and violence. The effects are dated, but the budget was also pretty limited. Then they had to stretch the budget for series 2 because they had to produce a Christmas episode as well. Some fans think some of Dr who is juvenile, but that's part of the charm to me. You can go from laughing, to being scared, to tears, sometimes in the same scene.

on this episode you saw a different side of The Doctor ( Furious and Rudeness ) now especially when Rose asks him where he is from. Now on this episode at the end he mentions to Rose there was a war that they lost and his planet burned like the Earth before his time. These words and this opening only happened because Rose was able to experiment the feeling of losing her home planet and also just a suggestion to check the doctor behavior with Rose on the next episodes. ❤❤

well, you probably know this but Dr. Who is actually quite an old show that goes all the way back to the 1960's. I was a faithful watcher back in the 1980's. Back then you could only find it on the local PBS station that had to run a fundraiser for it every week to purchase the next show from the BBC or someplace in Britain. Anyways, Dr. Who was only about 20 mins long and usually told the entire story in 4 episodes which this PBS station would play every...Sunday or Saturday late night or maybe it was Friday. Back then they could only purchase the shows from 10 years in the past or longer and it was strictly low budget soap opera. But great unique story lines. So the cheap looking mannequins go hand in hand with the original theme. However, the greatest addition to this newer version is it is about an hour long and always tells an interesting story. Which always made a nice break from American soap operas that always tended to have the same type of story lines that they copied from each other. Only for us, I would imagine, as their stories differed from ours using their own unique cultural make believes. A great spinoff was 'Torchwood'. British soap operas only had about 6-8 episodes per season compared to the 20-22 that the US has. I think the US is the only one that does that long. So it's no wonder all soap operas have similar story lines. Anyways, my age is starting to show by the long paragraph so I'll just shut up now. It was a kick watching your reaction vid. thanx

I really like the idea that the Doctor brought Rose to the End of the World as a way of starting their travels tabula rasa - with a clean slate. After watching the show a number of times, I think he brought her there for another reason as well. As he mentions at the end of the episode, his planet is gone, and he is the last of his kind. As you guys noticed, this has made the Doctor arrogant and smug, but I think that's his mask to hide his loneliness and sorrow. By bringing Rose to Earth's final moments, he is creating a similar experience for her, so he does not feel so alone. Now Rose has seen her own planet get destroyed (albeit not in a war), and experienced being the last of her kind. Only after the ordeal does he open up to her about his past, and I think it's because he wanted her to have those images fresh in her mind, to create a bond of kinship, of mutual understanding. If he started out telling her, she would only be able, through her limited experiences, to muster up pity and sympathy. It was a deeply selfish move on the Doctor's part, like a test he was running on Rose to see if she could handle it and him.

Loved your discussion about the lack of available skills after an apocalypse...BUT I would counter that with regards to phones for example, we can cope without - we can go back to the middle ages in terms of day to day needs. The issues will always be food, water and shelter and beyond that doctors, or people with enough medical know-how to prevent further mass extinction from things like cholera from contaminated water, infected wounds etc. Things that we deal with easily now, but could easily kill us if we lacked the medicine or skills needed. So in many ways, I guess the best skills, kids today could learn would be camping - basic shelter, food, heat, and how to filter water with some basic first aid training thrown in for good measure, perhaps.🤕 Plus, we don't know what environmental issues we might be dealing with in terms of earthquakes, volcanoes, forest fires or floods - having a smartphone becomes less of a priority even though of course it would help with communication and co-ordination among survivors. Plus dangerous animals may pop up in unexpected habitats, all the more vicious as they too scavenge for food - so weapons for self-defence would probably help, and also with hunting for food. My friends and I discuss this from time-to-time - what skill we would offer if the world imploded. I agree, the preppers probably stand the best chance in the long run. For me, having the ability to knit clothes, blankets, bedding and basic shelters from any material including plastic bags, VHS magnetic tape and any scraps of material or packaging is probably the skill I'd be bartering with the most🤩

You recently posted a reaction to "Leave the World Behind" (spoilers) and the ending had a lot of parallels with this episode, as you both alluded to. The characters' world is basically coming to an end so they go through the stages of fear and grief. But ultimately, they realize they can't do anything about it so they focus on things that give them temporary peace, like eating chips (or having a snack and watching an episode of Friends, in the case of the movie). It's kind of like a "repeated meme"

For me, Eccleston set the standard for all the modern Doctors. All future Doctors, including the current one you just saw, are some variation of his characterization of the Doctor. His emotions vary according to the situation and you get to see him be and go through varying emotions a couple of times, even within one story. He is brilliant. @@Syntell they are actually called Big Finish Audio full cast stories. Every Doctor has them. Big Finish is an audio stories company that started in the 90s after the show had been cancelled, so that we could keep on having adventures with the Doctor and his companions. They are great. Basically, Big Finish gets the rights to use a particular Doctor, a couple of years after their tenure has ended on screen, and they get to have fun with those characters, telling stories that may possibly take place in between the adventures we see in the show. Currently,, they have rights for the first Doctor up to the 12th Doctor. If you want to check them out one day, just start by searching Doctor Who Big Finish stories and the rest is easy.

Stick with it! The reboot is a little wonky as the show tried to figure out “who” it was in the 21st century with a piddly BBC budget - once America noticed it though and it’s ratings exploded SO did it’s quality and complexity. I hope y’all keep going as it finds its feet.

It's a revival not a reboot.

@@joshuaverran9443 I get your language quibble here but in tv terms reboot has been used both ways and it’s only more recently that it has been used so often regarding the practice of studios using aged popular products as a do over instead of paying writers. 2005 Who has been called a reboot since it happened. I get the difference, I’ve been watching who since 1984. Revival makes me think of creepy church basements with old jello salad hardening.

We are LOVING the show so far. Sure, It has its quirks but that’s all a part of the process.

The next episode is poor and bit boring in my imo. But the pacing does pick up in episode 4 Aliens of London

Really? Personally I thought episode 3 was the best of the 3 episodes that had aired at that time (back in 2005!)

That's totally fine if you think so. I'm just not used to these types of stories. Especially the ones that are more historical. But we just don't want to put off these two gentlemen having to watch this like its an educational journey in school. Remember this is a Sci-Fi show. Its meant to be entertainment. I prefer the the episodes with more suspense, horror and emotion.@@andrewroberts299
