it's not remotely a problem in the UK for Dr Who to suggest that the royals are werewolves, there's a minority of Brits who love the Royals, and a minority of Brits who hate them, but the vast majority of Brits don't really care.

I so love that this was the first and only episode where David Tennant was able to use his own natural accent haha. I also like how this Doctor shows he's evolving from his previous iteration. Eccleston's Doctor wouldn't have recognized or cared if he was being rude - Ten does and actually tries to stop it. And lastly, I love how much real history, scientific history, and pagan folklore is in this episode.

Queen Vic famously said “We are not amused” in response to a comedian’s performance making fun of the royal family. Incidentally the actress playing the Queen, Pauline Collins, guest starred in a 2nd Doctor Classic Who story, The Faceless Ones, back in 1967. She very nearly became a companion, as the BBC offered her a continuing role, but she turned it down because she had stage commitments. She’s a very well known actress with a huge list of TV and film roles to her credit.

The story I heard was that Queen Victoria had enjoyed the Alice books of Lewis Caroll and asked for more books by the author. However, his other books were mathematical or scientific in nature, and so, when these books were presented to the Queen, she made the famous "We are not amused!" statement.
@Nick-pu3of
@Nick-pu3of 5 ай бұрын
@@malcolmrowe9003 Truthfully, there's no evidence she ever said it. The variety and range of anecdotes is limitless, but the punchline is always the same - classic sign of an invented story. She either said it in response to Prince Albert telling a dirty joke, or to Grantham Yorke after he told a dirty joke, or perhaps *to* Yorke after watching a performance of HMS Pinafore, or perhaps it was another G&S musical and Yorke put it on, or according to Arthur Helps it was just because her ladies were giggling too much over dinner one night, or maybe it was on hearing the news that her favorite daughter was running around with a groomsman. According to Victoria herself she never said it and was a little nonplussed that it was said of her - she was often amused. The only vague evidence we have suggests that perhaps it was actually said by Elizabeth I hundreds of years earlier and misattributed to Victoria in the way that all royal stories were attributed to the current monarch before the internet existed and people could check. To be honest, your Lewis Carroll theory is entirely new to me. I've heard the Lewis Carroll story, of course, but I've never heard it connected to the "We are not amused" line. That's a mash-up of two entirely separate royal rumours.

@@Nick-pu3of For sure! This certainly isn't a hill I would choose to die upon. It is, however the story as I remember hearing it some time ago, so how much my memory has muddled it or how muddled it already was when told to me, or whether it is indeed the truth, I really couldn't say.

When the Doctor walked out of the TARDIS pretending to be scottish that was David Tennant using his natural scottish accent claiming to be James Robert McCrimmon which was a reference to the Second Doctor's companion Jamie McCrimmon from Classic Who.

Queen Elizabeth 2nd is the great-great-granddaughter of Queen Victoria (a direct descendent). Princess Anne is the second oldest child, and only daughter, of Queen Elizabeth 2nd and Prince Philip. I also love this episode because it combines Doctor Who with Werewolves (my favorite supernatural creature).

A few others have mentioned this already, that the phrase 'We are not amused' is quite commonly associated with Queen Victoria. Most children in the UK would have learned it in school, though it's unlikely that she ever actually said it. Generally regarded now to be one of those facts that everyone assumes to be the case, even though there isn't much in the way to actually back it up.

Most of the mystery of Bad Wolf was explained at the end of Series 1. When Rose absorbed the Time Vortex from the ta TARDIS, she was able to transcend time and message herself across the ages. Yet to be revealed is the origin of the term "Bad Wolf" itself. Best. Mike.

Glad you came back to this! I see others have answered your questions about "We are not amused" and Queen Vic, and the whole Bad Wolf thing being 90% already wrapped up, but I'm glad you spotted the Torchwood there at the end. Kinda mixed feelings that at least one of you has already seen Torchwood, but I guess that doesn't spoil too too much. Funny mentioning the last Teen Wolf series, I never watched it but my 1st cousin was a writer on the show. I have no idea what all he did for it. I know, real supportive right? 🤣 I watched his show Haven and Shadowhunters, so gimme a break! 😅 Looking forward to the next 2 episodes as they're both great!! Excited FOR you! Another great reaction. This is such a fun, quintessentially Doctor Who episode. Alongside some great action (and a surprisingly good looking werewolf), there are some lovely performances. Pauline Collins delivers a wonderfully understated performance of a powerful woman haunted by grief and lost love. Yes, the Doctor and Rose did save her, but there is a high body count and the Doctor and Rose are treating it all as a great big fun adventure and she calls them out on it. The life having adventures through time and space has a cost. And who knows, maybe Torchwood will become significant. After all, it was also one of the quiz answers on the Bad Wolf Weakest Link last series. "We are not amused" is to Queen Victoria what "I cannot tell a lie" is to George Washington. She may not have said it at all (accounts vary), but her persona is remembered as austere and stern and it's what anyone doing an impersonation of her would say. Hence the ongoing joke about the Doctor and Rose trying to get her to say it. I don't remember there being any fuss at the time over the speculation that Queen Victoria or our current Royal Family were werewolves, I guess everyone just took it as a joke and over here harmless jokes about the Royals are not uncommon.

They reuse a lot of names in the Royal Family (and sometimes take a regnal name upon becoming the monarch). Queen Victoria was succeeded by her son, Edward VII. Then there was his son, George V; George's son, Edward VIII, who abdicated to marry a divorcee and was never crowned; succeeded by his brother, George VI, who was the father of Elizabeth II; and now there is Charles III.
@caffeinedelusions
@caffeinedelusions 5 ай бұрын
The thing about Rose going 'oot and aboot' is actually KINDA a nod to some of the politics at the BBC surrounding the casting of Nine and Ten. See, in the UK a Scottish accent is sort of seen as low class. It's a similar cultural attitude to what one sees in the United States towards a thick southern drawl; even if the individual with the accent is highly educated and intelligent, the accent itself paints the portrait of a rural country bumpkin, a hick, or a blue-collar worker. It's not fair or just, but it's the preconceived notion of a broad sweep of British society. There were a fair share of folk among BBC executives that didn't like Chris Eccleston portraying the Doctor with a Northern/Scottish accent because it didn't fit their class consciousness... and while it certainly wasn't the entire reason he only got the one season (that's Chris's story to tell, and he's been mum about the whole thing for YEARS now), it certainly played a role in the casting of David Tennant (who is VERY MUCH a Scotsman with a thick brogue, his performance as Scrooge McDuck is pretty close to his natural accent with only a little bit of emphasis) because he's willing to suppress that brogue and put on a London accent to play the Doctor. So when we have Rose putting on a thick exaggerated Scottish accent and Ten telling her to stop it, that's a Scotsman asking not to be mocked. On the positive side, we do see attitudes regarding northern accents loosening gradually, and Capaldi got to play his entire run as the Twelfth Doctor with his own Glasgow accent.

The Doctor's previous incarnation wasn't around for over 900 years, but the Doctor as a whole was. While it is difficult to ascribe an actual birthday to The Doctor, since his birth isn't really documented in the show, it was calculated that based on later episode reference points the First Doctor was 236 when he first left Gallifrey. We also know that The Doctor first says his age in a Second Doctor episode which had him at age 450 (earth years). The Third Doctor measured his age in Gallifreyan years, different from Earth years, but claimed to have lived for several thousand years. Something to note also here is that he could have just meant how many years his travels took him apart from "modern" time, usually only pinned down by his companions' base starting points. I can tell I've gone overlong already, but hopefully this is helpful. By the time you get to this Doctor, commonly referred to as Tenth Doctor, he's over 900 in earth-years. PS - you are on the RIGHT track about the TARDIS taking him to where he needs to go instead of where he wants to go. Gold star.

Do you guys care about the original show? Like, can I mention stuff that might count as a spoiler for the 1969 season? Anyway... The reason the Tardis doesn't work keeps changing, and the given reasons are contradictory. 1963-1968 - The Doctor is lost and doesn't know precisely where they are. Not knowing where they are, he cannot target specific dates. 1969 - The Tardis is incapable of targeting specific dates. The way Tardises work, the more specific the controls the shorter lifespan the machine has. 1970-1973 - The Tardis is disabled, and cannot be used. 1974-1977 - The Tardis works just fine, and can land wherever the Doctor wants without fail. 1978-1979 - The Doctor is on the run, and has set the Tardis to random so no one can follow him. 1980-1989 - The Tardis is old as hell, and despite the Doctor doing constant repairs on it the damn thing just don't work right and cannot land where it's asked to. -no show for 17 years- 2005-present - The Doctor doesn't know how to pilot it. He tries, but he's just bad at time travel. It's just best not to question it, really. The Tardis works as well as the scriptwriters want it to work in any given moment.
@Nick-pu3of

Also - Sometimes the Doctor invented Tardises and built the first one, sometimes Tardises long pre-date his life. Sometimes Tardises are built and sometimes "grown" (whatever that means). Sometimes they're called "Travel pods" and the word Tardis just what the Doctor calls his, and sometimes they're all called Tardises. There is no consistency.
