Harry Potter And The Sorcerer's Stone Movie Description:
Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone is a fantasy novel written by British author J. K. Rowling. The first novel in the Harry Potter series and Rowling's debut novel, it follows Harry Potter, a young wizard who discovers his magical heritage on his eleventh birthday, when he receives a letter of acceptance to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Harry makes close friends and a few enemies during his first year at the school, and with the help of his friends, he faces an attempted comeback by the dark wizard Lord Voldemort, who killed Harry's parents, but failed to kill Harry when he was just 15 months old.
The book was first published in the United Kingdom on 26 June 1997 by Bloomsbury. It was published in the United States the following year by Scholastic Corporation under the title Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. It won most of the British book awards that were judged by children and other awards in the US. The book reached the top of the New York Times list of best-selling fiction in August 1999 and stayed near the top of that list for much of 1999 and 2000. It has been translated into at least 73 other languages, and has been made into a feature-length film of the same name, as have all six of its sequels. The novel has sold in excess of 120 million copies, making it the best-selling book of all time.
Most reviews were very favourable, commenting on Rowling's imagination, humour, simple, direct style and clever plot construction, although a few complained that the final chapters seemed rushed. The writing has been compared to that of Jane Austen, one of Rowling's favourite authors; Roald Dahl, whose works dominated children's stories before the appearance of Harry Potter; and the Ancient Greek story-teller Homer. While some commentators thought the book looked backwards to Victorian and Edwardian boarding school stories, others thought it placed the genre firmly in the modern world by featuring contemporary ethical and social issues, as well as overcoming obstacles like bullies.
Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, along with the rest of the Harry Potter series, has been attacked by some religious groups and banned in some countries because of accusations that the novels promote witchcraft under the guise of a heroic, moral story. Other religious commentators have written that the book exemplifies important viewpoints, including the power of self-sacrifice and the ways in which people's decisions shape their personalities. The series has been used as a source of object lessons in educational techniques, sociological analysis and marketing.

NO! I swear there were very, VERY few things about Prisoner of Azkaban I actually liked. 1.) Snape stepped up and tried to protect them from Lupin werewolf. 2.) Buckbeak was kickass. 3.) @@readlater8962 BS reasons?? Harry saved the Wizarding World at 11, Hermione kept Harry alive so he could save the world, Ron's fifty points was a bit too much even though he sacrificed himself, should've gotten max 20 in my opinion, but the kids in these books and movies get points for doing stuff way less impressive than what the trio did, (like getting 10 points literally just for answering a question correctly) imo they deserve to get points for what they did, but the points should've been added when Harry was still in the hospital instead of during the announcement of the winner, it was really cruel to make the slytherins think they won to then just rip the victory out of their hands

@@vstopbiaswreckingme7194 True , take it from a Slytherin, the main problem isn’t the fact they got 150+10 points for saving the world’s ass or standing up against their friends ( and killing a professor !) , that was absolutely fair and well deserved ! The true problem is the way Dumbledore went about it , it is absolutely disgusting ! Slytherins might be Slytherins but they were children first ! With a cruel Headmaster like that, favoriting his house instead off being neutral like one is supposed to be no wonder Snape gets free range on bullying children and favoriting his own house , his boss is literally doing the same in a even more sneaky way ! At least Snape is upfront about it !

About Professor McGonagall getting Harry the broom - in the book she mentions that she is sick of losing to Slytherin every year. Harry didn't have a broom of his own so he couldn't join the house team, so to give her house an edge on Slytherin, she got it for him. If you enjoy the movies, I highly suggest the books. This isn't a spoiler, so I'll explain it to you. Voldemort literally cannot touch Harry, because when his mother, Lily, sacrificed herself for him, she created a protection spell, which was immediately activated upon her self-sacrifice, which was created from her love for Harry. Because of that protection spell, Voldemort cannot touch Harry without getting damaged, that's why Quirrell's body was burned (in the books it only suffered severe burns that led to his death instead of turning into ash). Self-sacrifice is quite an ancient magic, and gives the "target" a protection against the person whorever killed the one who sacrificed themselves for them.
@StorymasterQ
@StorymasterQ 3 жыл бұрын
It's been a while, and I'm admittedly too lazy to look for myself, but is there an explanation about whether it's explicitly only applies until the "target" reaches 'adulthood'? What happens if someone self-sacrifices to save someone who's already an adult, would the spell activate? Also, was it ever clarified that the protection is only against the person who killed the protector and not a blanket protection everything/everyone? What about persons affiliated from the killer, say, his minions, but not the killer himself?
@TheDragonsRose
@TheDragonsRose 3 жыл бұрын
@@StorymasterQ It sounds like you're focused on it being an age thing. I don't think that has any relation to the spell itself. The OP explains that it's a self-sacrifice spell to protect the individual with one's own life, so the one that killed the sacrificed person will be unable to physically touch the person that was protected. Quirrell was literally fused with Voldemort who was using his body to stay alive, therefore Quirrell was Voldemort's body touching Harry and it caused the spell to activate.
@StorymasterQ
@StorymasterQ 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheDragonsRose No but isn't there something in the book that mentions that the spell will lose its powers on Harry's 17th birthday, when he's recognised by the Wizarding Community as an adult? So I was wondering if the spell would activate when it's used to defend an adult.

The problem with the House Cup and the points is that Harry was out of the hospital wing for 3 days before the End of Term feast(in the book). Dumbledore had all that time to award Gryffindor all those points, but deliberately chose to let Slytherin celebrate their victory only to suddenly take it away from them. The kids deserved to be rewarded for saving the day since the adults sucked at doing their jobs, but they should have been rewarded on time. Not when the school year is already over and winners have already been declared to the whole school.

I feel you on wanting a wand. I dressed as Hermione one year for Halloween and I made my own wand. Literally took a tree branch, cut it down to size, and whittled it into shape with a pocket knife the day before Halloween. My hand was so sore for the next few days, but it was totally worth it. I had never whittled anything in my life, but I did a good job on it and I'm still really proud of it. I still have it too. I also made my own timeturner. I didn't have an hourglass, but I had this pair of clock earrings and I took one of them and put it on a chain. I had so much fun being creative with my outfit.

Then several years later, I took it once more and once again the test was completely different. Slytherin. I don't know how the test is deviced, but I'm certainly impressed by it's consistency. My personality has changed a lot since my teens (I'm 32 now), but it still finds a red thread, that apparently distinguishes me as Slytherin. Pretty cool xP.

Theres a piece of me that wishes I had never read the books before seeing the movies... most of us going into the theaters already knew what was going to happen, the excitement was simply seeing how they brought this crazy wizard world to life on the screen. For me I enjoyed the movies especially the early ones, but didn’t understand a lot after book 3. The movies were a mainstream fun franchise for me as a kid. Then I got into reading in middle school and in high school I started the HP series. I don’t remember why honestly. The HP franchise quickly became one of my favorites and it made more sense. They were fun as a kid and I still enjoy the movies today. Definitely one of my favorite book to movies. The books were hands down better even having seen the movies first. I agree though, it’s not as fun watching movies you’ve already read.

Hopefully, it lives up to people's expectations and doesn't become the next Cyberpunk. Out of all the games made out of the series so far, the Order of the Phoenix and Half Blood Prince games have been the best of the bunch imo. Having the entirety of Hogwarts to explore freely at your own pace was awesome, and really did a great job immersing you into the world, even if the camera got a bit squiggly at times. The worst is a tie between Goblet of Fire and the Deathly Hallows games for me. He shed her blood, but it lives on in you and her sister. Her blood became your refuge. You need return there only once a year, but as long as you can still call it home, there he cannot hurt you.
