And yet, I just found another reactor I like who is good about not talking over dialogue, and the complaint committee rips her frequently for being too quiet. "If I wanted to just watch the movie, I would" There is a balance to it but to some degree, I feel like they can't win. Also I don't mind it as long as it isn't excessive. It lends a degree of credibility to the claim of "first time watching", that they get surprised by/miss these iconic moments we know on an, "I've seen this 10 (or more) times" level of familiarity

The proposed escape through Spain makes sense. Even though Franco was a right-wing fascist, he never joined the Axis (due to a disparity in Spains demands and Nazi-Germanys offers in goods and weapons). Also, even though he used anti-semitic language and positions in his speeches, he only provided the Nazis with a list of spanish jews, but did not deport them and/or limit their citizenship. Spain supposedly has the highest count of transitioning jewish refugees during WW2 with about 20k-35k. So yes, the man was heinous and a fascist. But he did not stoop as low as the Nazis did.

QT creates the story, writes the story, directs the actors, chooses the cameras and lenses, and he is indeed behind the camera. unless he’s making a brief cameo. But even then, it is with strict instructions. you know more than I do about cinematography but I am betting that all the little quirks you noticed with the lenses, cameras, lighting and angles were all deliberate. Often times it’s a nod to the other type of film geeks out there. The ones who are obsessed with the way old movies were filmed and he shoots them in that particular way to honor them. Even, or especially if that scene had a mistake. Some people say that he is just a rip off artist because of this, I disagree. And you are right, this was shot on film. He will never use digital or cgi. Watch the Hateful 8 for a very rare camera and film combo.

From a blog: The fountain pen was a button filler which means it could have been a PENOL (Pen Olson) or a Parker. However, I don't think German soldiers would have been writing with a Parker at that time, or would they? The Parker Vacumatics had been around for quite a while before the start of open hostilities (IIRC, Germany annexed the Sudetenland in 1936, but didn't start actually shooting until they invaded Poland in 1939). Even after the invasion of Poland, it likely would have been possible for a German officer who wanted one to obtain a Parker via Switzerland or, after the invasion of France, get a French one. There were other button fillers around, too, using pressure bars rather than a vacuum driven mechanism like the Vacumatic. BTW, if it was a Vacumatic, it's entirely reasonable to "top up" a partially filled pen to ensure there's enough ink for a long writing session, and it wasn't completely out of the question to fill a pen before starting to write even with pressure bar button fillers (or lever, or crescent, or coin or hatchet or slide or twist fillers, for that matter).

Remember, as indicated at the *very start* of the film with "Once upon a time..." this is a *fairy tale* version of WWII. 😁 Tarantino had a story to tell, he didn't care about historical accuracy, and by providing the fairy-tale introduction he's telling the audience they shouldn't care about historical accuracy, either. Anybody who knew anything, knew in 1944 that Germany was going to lose -- and Landa is no fool. Moreover, he's got American commandos *in Paris* within striking distance of German leadership -- and they couldn't be kept out. So, yeah, Landa decides to cut a deal.

Dear Mr. Boyd, seeing your joy watching this film, brought me joy. As I also believe it's Tarantino's magnum opus: At the cinema when I saw this: after it finished there was a standing ovation ❤

Thousands of Jews fled to Spain during WWII. Many had to enter illegally - there was, of course, no open door policy. Rumors of French Jews fleeing from occuped France to Spain was perfectly plausible.

I think your confusion at a fountain pen may be the most shocking thing I've seen in any of your videos

You asked why Chaplin made a movie about a baby goat. The Kid is not about a goat. I’d recommend seeing it as it was his first feature length film.

Its not an impossible shot, and not two frames, it's shot using a diopter lens. Tarantino uses them often, they have one side clear and one side focused closer.

A little sidenote: there's exactly one word being spoken in Polish in the entire movie. When Hans Landa decides not to shoot Shoshanna, he says "pusty" which means empty, referring to his gun. Anyway, I enjoyed two things: the level of knowledge being displayed about moviemaking and other things... aaand the absolute disgust emanating from this video whenever certain foods were mentioned. :D It's as if I saw myself talk about onions (which I absolutely DESPISE) and even though I don't agree with any of the food takes in this video, I gotta respect someone who has as strong opinions on food as I tend to have. Anyway, I subscribed. :D

The single shot arm gun (punch pistol) is indeed a real device. The US military made a few of them at one point! ^_^ I forgot its actual name though.
