this mv and lyrics have a storyline which references the gothic novel Carmilla, one of the first vampire fictions, first lesbian vampire fiction to be exact. We can see victorian aesthetics easily in the mv

YES! I'm pretty sure that the lyrics and the video are based on Sheridan Le Fanu's Carmilla! The imagery portrayed in the lyrics ''I rose from the ashes in the cold ground'', ''I'll make you dream of only me'', etc. The black cat, the nightmares, the monster behind a beautiful face, the gothic horror presented in the sets, etc. It's such a good song and video!

Liked the video but disagree with the fan service comments. Their getting close to each other in this mv is connected with the theme of the song, which is two monsters fighting for control

Agree but we also have to take into consideration the fact that not everyone is going to get it at first watch. Especially the story behind the mv isn't too in your face and obvious. If someone who has no prior knowledge of what the mv tackles, it's prone to get misunderstood.

I think fan service that is forced isn’t enjoyable for anyone, but usually it’s easy to tell the difference. And I feel like fan service is most prominent at fan signs or in public as opposed to a music video setting where the implication is meant to tell a story. An example of this is “All In” by Monsta X where Hyungwon and Minhyuk portray a couple who face the consequences of an oppressive society. This is the farthest thing from fan service and I think the same could mostly be said about this video as the song seems to talk about a very dark and twisted relationship.
@gracegrimms1627

tbh the least of SM's concern is fan service (trust me lol) even for Red Velvet themselves. They don't push any interaction for the fan's entertainment everything is just very natural and I think even non fans who casually checks on them knows this. Not saying this because I am protecting them as their fan or whatsoever but it is just the fact. Irene might be clingy sometimes with her members but she's also the type to cringe hard when it comes things like fan service, Seulgi is too. Anyways I'm getting out of context and I just wanted to shed a light about their personality and if there are scenes like this, it is purely based on a story of the song. Based on the teasers released, Monster is about "two shadows, one individual" and from the images portrayed from this mv one is learning how to be a monster from the other that's why there's such a lot of stills they were reflecting each other. But also it was kind of dominating/manipulative way like Irene (the monster) is making Seulgi become a part of her hence some of the moves looks like she's controlling her. In Bad Boy yes they also did it. It was supposed to be Joy and Seulgi but the latter expressed she isn't comfortable with it (at that time) so Irene took her place as the two were also actresses in the sideline and okay with doing the scene to portray whatever the persona of the story has to tell. I explained it in a very messy way, english is really not my first language but I hope you all would understand

I dunno if I missed out on something but.. am kind of confused why some people who watched Monster MV, pointing out the scenes with Irene and Seulgi being too close makes them uncomfortable? and I dunno where the idea came from, like sexualising the girls or saying that they just did it for queer-baiting? Like aren’t they informed us the first time they released the teaser, that their concept is *One Individual Two Shadows* ? Which they portrayed really well in the MV. That the *monster* inside us.. even though we tried real hard on hiding and fighting over it, keeps on living inside and eating us alive. The visualisation is great! That scenes are one of the important part of the MV - it shows how Seulgi battling Irene, who wants to take over her, but sadly she lost in the end. Irene is the monster by the way. Same on the first and last frame of the choreography, they switched place to show us who controls who, and who won the battle. The MV is perfect and fit for their concept. The storyline is there. And.. that’s on my ted talk. Seriously, tell me something I don’t know, guys. 😅

Why Irene and Seulgi are so close in the MV is not actually because it portrays two women flirting each other but rather the concept of this album where one person battles with the monster inside them that is trying to take over their minds(?). Yep. But I do agree that it’s not exactly great to force people to be uncomfortably close to each other for fan service.
@TY_Track
@TY_Track 4 жыл бұрын
Seulgi and Irene did say it was out of their comfort zone but they have good chemistry so it wasn't that bad. Idk, I don't think the comment on the "fan service" clips were necessary... it wasn't put in there just cause, they're telling a story. And if someone is uncomfortable watching two girls get close like that or two males, then there's a problem with the person not the video. However I don't agree with it if they idols themselves were forced to without wanting to. But since Irene and Seulgi spoke on it, then I see nothing wrong. Idk i guess the way you spoke about it rubbed me the wrong way

Artists aside, anyone not comfortable seeing 2 people of the same gender kissing can gtfo. 2020 doesn’t need homophobic people nor heteronormativity. Imo, if MVs with lgbtq imagery are a problem, then so are MVs with het imagery as well. I’d argue that the latter is actually far more problematic. The real issue with lgbtq imagery in MVs (esp in Kpop), is that it is often used purely as a magnet to pull people in, and it ends up fetishizing lgbtq people. However if there’s an actual message tied to lgbtq history or culture (as there is in this instance), then I see no problem with it.
@gracegrimms1627
@gracegrimms1627 4 жыл бұрын
Agree! There’s a difference between portraying lgbt people and relationships in an artful, beautiful, and realistic manner, and using characters who are lgbt purely to draw in fans or lgbt imagery to please an audience. There’s a big difference between fetishization and representation. Also homophobes can fuck right off

Wait. Why are MVs with het (hetero, I assume) imagery “problematic”?
@indigodragon0613
@indigodragon0613 4 жыл бұрын
Scott Nguyen Idk how this isn’t apparent, but het imagery in MVs is usually overtly sexual and one sided. Women are sexualized to the point of being objects and prizes to be “shown off.” Gender stereotypes are almost always used, and toxic behavior is normalized. This isn’t exclusive to het imagery of course, but whenever het imagery is shown, you are almost guaranteed to see the aforementioned issues.
@scottnguyen9152
@scottnguyen9152 4 жыл бұрын
@@indigodragon0613 It isn't apparent because you made a broad sweeping generalization, and we clearly have different baselines of what constitutes heterosexual imagery. To me the term heterosexual is completely neutral, whereas you seem to attach to it a lot of baggage. This was made further confusing by your earlier statements: 1. "...anyone not comfortable seeing 2 people of the same gender kissing can gtfo." I have no problem with it. 2 ."...if MVs with lgbtq imagery are a problem, then so are MVs with het imagery as well." Again, A-Okay with both. I agree that objectifying women--or anyone, really--with no regard to the person as a whole is a problem. The confusion here stems from your coupling of "het" imagery with all the negative things you listed. Not everyone has the same unfavorable view of heterosexual imagery as a jumping off point.

I do not see the point of bringing up former Japanese occupation in Korea, and I find it utterly unfitting in the context of this music video. Of course I acknowledge the problem of Japan's unapologetic stance regarding their war crimes and occupations especially concerning Korea and it always has been an issue. The flag of the Japanese empire (the one with additional stripes to the central sun) is a worldwide symbol of terrible territorial actions and crimes as well as nationalist and right wing tendencies (similar but maybe not as extreme as the Swastika in Western history) and it was really stupid of Tiffany posting that so thoughtlessly but I do not understand what that has to do with a red sun in general in the reaction of a music video with Fantasy concept. As for the symbol of the red sun on its own: Firstly all or most of East Asia sees the sun as red; children for example would draw it as red and not as yellow like in Western cultures; the Japanese just decided to put the sun on their flag fitting their name. Secondly the phrase red sun has been a popular pop culture reference in Korea stemming from a 2000s movie where a hypnotist uses this phrase to hypnotize his 'victims'; Dreamcatcher's song 'Red sun' is based roughly on this usage and the context of hypnotizing/enticing people also fits with IRENE & SEULGI's concept in this music video.

You can educate her without being rude, she is from a different culture and obviously there is a language barrier so you cannot expect her to know all of this. On top of that, she said repeatedly that "she didn't know" that she wasn't from Korea so she wasn't cualified to comment on this.

@keithcraig506

I don't mean to sound like a tool here, but if this irritates you, you shouldn't watch reaction videos. People watch reaction videos to see people give their opinions on what is happening in the video. This requires that they talk about the video. I, like a lot of people, would rather see them pause the video when they have something to say, as opposed to talking over the video and possibly miss something noteworthy in the video. If the video has a lot of interesting points, there will be a lot of pauses. I don't know how many times I've seen a reacter miss what I though was one of the best parts of a video because they got distracted and started talking about something that happened 4 seconds before. In short, we're not here to watch the music video. We're here to see her reaction and opinions on the video. If you want to see the whole, uninterrupted MV, go watch the original MV. If you want to see a reaction expect people to pause and react.

The fan service is so annoying frankly. No one knows their orientation, and forcing that upon them is just not something anyone should do. The MV is about two monsters fighting for control, as another commenter pointed out. I fully support the LGBT+ community, but artists shouldn't have to pretend to be LGBT+ just so certain fans can have their fantasies play out in front of them. But then again this is the KPop industry where what artists want doesn't matter.
