Fun fact! Director of _Requiem for a Dream_ Darren Aronofsky, purchased the film rights to this movie in order to do the shot-for-shot remake of the bath scene in his movie! There's also a detail that's a bit hard to pick up on, but when Mimi talks to her mom, she suddenly starts speaking in a Kansai accent. It seems she's originally from somewhere around Osaka but came to Tokyo to become a singer and typically hides her accent.

This movie is great because Satoshi Kon used animation as medium to it's fullest. He deliberately used animation to blur the lines between fantasy and reality. Sometimes it works a little too well and confuses some people. Smaller moments get swallowed up and don't pay off the first time. We keep seeing the window view from Mima's apartment so that when she looks out at the end, we're supposed to notice that the view is different. This signals that Rumi had recreated "Mima's Room" to perfection and was living her private life as Mima. So when Mima became an actor and started doing more risky and adult things, Rumi couldn't handle it and broke. It started as ploy to try and scare Mima back into being the perfect pop idol until Rumi got it in her head that she could have Mima killed and take her place. This movie was way ahead of it's time and makes the director's passing even sadder when you think of everything that he didn't get to fully realize.

great reaction. This was director Satoshi Kon's debut film and breakout hit. He has said before that he prefers working in animation over live action because it lends itself more to his rapid-pace directing style. If youre interested in more mature anime films, others by him such as Millenium Actress or Paprika (which inspired inception) would be a good place to go. Or, if you havent already seen Akira, it is a staple of the sci-fi/cyberpunk genre, not only in animation but in film in general.

Some more movies that's kind of gritty, hand drawn art style from around this era are: 1. Memories: Magnetic Rose (psychological thriller) 2. Ghost in the shell 1996 3. Akira 4. Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honnêamise 5. Redline 6. Paprika (same director as perfect blue)

10/10 Intense thrill ride OK, this is definitely one anime movie that really has this creepy feel that clings to you as you watch. The animation is really good as characters and movements appear so life-like, it seems like reality. There's definitely the theme of 'identity' and Mima's difficulty distinguishing reality from illusion. Her paranoia and fear tends to grab your attention and as she asks questions, you ask the same ones. I thought the film also played well with celebrity infatuation and the price of fame. It really had a lot going for it and the different camera angles give a very dreamy, mysterious atmosphere. One great shot is the zoom out from Mima's apartment. I could've sworn that was a real city. "Who are you?" sums up this movie. What a film. By the way, CHAM's song is really catchy.

The editing and sound design in Perfect Blue is right up there with the best thrillers.

that's great you liked it! I'd say a really underrated anime with a similar thriller/horror/mystery vibe is Shiki. Or if you want more from the mystery and psychological genres there are also Erased or Oshi no Ko (which is airing now)

The "vibes" are Darren Aronofsky Black Swan vibes...who is highly influenced by Perfect Blue.

cool u reference lynch, i think Lost highway, mulholland drive, and inland empire are so similar in some ways to this...esp mulholland drive. its sad there arent too many films like Lynch's these days. He does Dream like in the best most sinister way possible.

Perfect film and reaction. Its still a great psychological thriller with solid animation and filming techniques. Essay incoming 😂😂😂 Its creepy and dark, and scarily enough its topics and story are much more relevant to us today more than ever. Unlike back then, anyone can be a celebrity icon nowadays with social media. Perfect Blue is a struggle of identity, between Mima, Rumi and the Stalker. Mima is having a mental breakdown, wondering whether the career change is worth it experiencing the dark seedy underbelly of the entertainment industry. A blend of reality and fantasy. Rumi and the Stalker however are obsessed with her remaining a pop idol, and are trying to force that identity onto her. That her only identity worth having is as a pop idol. There's a correlation to a pop idol being the identity of a pure and immature child, and being an actress is where you mature and shed that childish persona to be viewed as and treated as an adult. Thus you are tainted in the eyes of your pop idol fandom. This identity crisis is more relevant today due to social media where anyone can become a celebrity icon. Most fans can recognize it as a false persona for your brand.. but others buy into the lie as your true self. This is where stalkers and obsessed fans become a big problem. They are convinced they know you, and know you better than yourself. But that icon is a facade. A polished, artifically created perfect persona of yourself.. but its not really you. The problem becomes too real when those people don't understand that. The Stalker was convinced Pop Idol Mima (her "true" self in his eyes) was crying for help and didn't want to be an actress. Thus he believed Actress Mima to be an imposter, and was convinced by Rumi (posing as Mima) to kill her. The reveal of Rumi being the culprit being it all is still mind boggling. Its only brought up in one insignifcant line of dialogue, but Rumi herself used to be a pop idol in her youth. So its to be understood, that she was re-living that life through Mima. The career change, most specifically the assault scene, made her snap and brought her onto this path of chaos lol. Anyway this film is fantastic as a commentary on the dark aide of the japanese entertainment industry. The criticism of the pop idol fandom, with a central theme of identity. Hope you rewatch it again in your spare time 😁

Satoshi Kon is one of the greatest anime directors of all time. Parprika, Tokyo Godfathers and Millenium Actress are all masterpieces but not really horror related

This is not the kind of film to only watch once lol. The more analysis videos you watch about this film the more genius it becomes. For example, the last dialogue from Mima in the car is actually said by Rumi's voice actor. Really makes you rethink everything you thought you figured out.
