Years before meeting Shrek and Donkey, the adorable but tricky Puss in Boots must clear his name from all charges making him a wanted fugitive. While trying to steal magic beans from infamous criminals Jack and Jill, the hero crosses paths with his female match, Kitty Softpaws, who leads Puss to his old friend, but now enemy, Humpty Dumpty. Memories of friendship and betrayal enlarge Puss's doubt, but he eventually agrees to help the egg get the magic beans. Together, the three plan to steal the beans, get to the Giant's castle, nab the golden goose, and clear Puss's name. It stars Antonio Banderas, alongside Salma Hayek, Zach Galifianakis, Billy Bob Thornton, and Amy Sedaris.

Watch this movie again recently for the first time since it premiered, and I really liked it, it's really solid! I feel bad some people around apparently seemed to not have good memories of it.. The Last Wish is a good sequel for it, not 2 alone. :(

This first film is actually not only incredibly mediocre compared to The Last Wish, but just mediocre in general in my opinion. I’m glad they chose a different creative team to make the sequel years later

Even though this isn’t one of my favorite movies, the reconciliation of Puss and Humpty’s friendship as well as Humpty’s redemption arc are deeply personal for me. My childhood best friend was also deeply troubled, but one of the most beautiful people you could ever know. When she passed away, everyone got to see how “golden” she really was because she was an organ donor. 5 people, including a child, are able to thrive in life because of her final act of kindness.

I grew up with Puss in Boots. I've re-watch this movie way more than any other movie that I can remember. So when Puss 2 was announced I was jumping out into space, but I was still a little skeptical about what direction Dream Works would go with Puss. But after watching Puss in Boots The Last Wish, I can happily say that it left me ready willing and able to see what comes next in the Shrek universe.

I dont really understand why this movie isnt loved more. Yea it's not Dreamwork's most "mind blowing", but it's still really fun and enjoyable! I love that Puss has gotten his own movies now. The Last Wish will always be the best, but I never had problems with his first movie either. It's a classic

I don't know if this was on purpose, but Kitty Softpaws has some similarly to the cat in Gagliuso. Which is one of two Italian version of Puss in Boots, written/published in 1634 by Giambattista Basile. In this version the cat is female. And is betrayed by her master whom she has managed to win so much for. You can find the story in a book called The King of the Cats and other Fairytales by John Richard Stephen's. Which was released in 1993 Gagliuso starts on page 13. Kitty makes me think of this version everytime I see her.

@@sawanna508 I am not sure where you can find it in Italian. The book I mentioned might have an Italian translation. I am an American whom just likes fairytales and has several collections of them that are kind enough to give to orgin of them.

So glad you liked this one, but Puss in Boots and the last wish is even BETTER! So excited to see you guys react to that one! Also, yes these movies take place in the Shrek universe, but they really are their own movies. I understand why you would compare them, but apart from the Puss in Boot character, they have nothing in common, so it'd be great if you could see them as a separate franchise altogether. I really can't wait for your reaction to the last wish!

If the ending credits are to be taken as canon, Humpty survives (and just goes to live with the goose), and even Jack and Jill are ‘just’ in traction. _If_ it’s to be taken as canon.

I FORGOT TO ADD, My first experience with real life Antonio Banderas was the little known "Take The Lead". It was my first experience watching him dance, its a movie inspired by a true story. I really like it and recommend it.

I saw this at a drive in theater with a friend the week it came out. We were glad that we decided to go that route, because Humpty's "I was there the whole time" had us HOWLING in the car. Him appearing under the lady's skirt had me gasping for air and in tears.

The merch I got already is brilliant! & as a wrestling fan, I would love to have a 'Ready, Willing & Able' tshirt in that exact design! & Answer 'Tree' & Quinn 'Sweaty Controller' tshirt too! Well, Batman was inspired by Zorro so maybe Softpaws was a nod to it? And obviously Banderas played Zorro and Puss in Boots is heavily inspired by his interpretation of the character. Also, doesn't gold devalue the more of it there is? So maybe the town isn't all that loaded.

If I remember correctly, in the original story of Jack and the magic beans, the giant runs after Jack and while he's climbing down the beanstalk, Jack gets an axe and quickly chops it down. The giant falls along the beanstalk, and since he was still fairly high up, the fall kills him. That's how he dies! They do not mention the giant's wife in this movie though.

I love this movie and think it did really well as a spin off. Yeah we miss out on say the musical craziness, but considering they had a lot of spanish like instrumental music it fits Puss in Boots more where as the Smash Mouth like music fits Shrek more. I thought we had a sequel that came out between the newest movie and this one, but no it was just a short film that was Puss in Boots: The three Diablos. Nothing special just had me wondering something was off. I like to think this felt more prequel ish to Shrek 2. Like this was when Puss was still an outlaw looking for gold in a way. And when he met Shrek things changed for him, he found a home in a way. Not sure if it is canon or not but I think it fits. I need to watch the new sequel so I am ready for you guys reaction!

Today I learned that Puss in Boots is a German fairy tale that originated in the year 1550. For the past 20 years I thought that it was an original character created by Dreamworks. 🤔

Yeah. The original title of the fairy tale is "Der gestiefelte Kater". The literal translation is boots wearing male cat. Kater is the german word for a male cat. Since English doesn't have a word for male cat they chose puss instead.

This is the only movie in the Shrekverse I never watched. From the trailers it did not seem worth the theater ticket price & afterward I just never got around to looking it up. Glad to finally "see it" with you guys tho~ It's got nothing on PiB: The Last Wish tho

My favorite things about this movie: the guitar solo from the dance fight is 🔥🔥🔥 especially the full version. Every time Jack and Jill show up it’s like a video game lose screen lmao. And the style of the Mother gooses’ wings🙌🏽

I watched the second Puss In Boots without watching the first, and I only watched this one to watch their reaction - actually a solid movie. I really enjoyed it. But they're gonna LOVE The Last Wish. I think especially Oak will love the message.
