It’s very easy for people to just throw the word “masterpiece” around like it’s going out of fashion, but sometimes you will come across a piece of work that merits such high acclaim; _Robocop_ (1987) is arguably one such piece of work.

There is *zero* CG in this movie. Even Robo's vision was done analog style. This is a hand made film. Squibs, puppets, stop motion, suits, clever angles, great actors, and style. Theres maybe 5 movies in the 80s that use CGI and it's so primitive you notice it right away.

Ok gotcha. I did notice that it was more of a stop motion/puppet esc movement while watching the 2nd movie, I mentioned it looked like I was watching a episode of “Robot Chicken” but yeah my brain didn’t go to stop motion even though I could tell there was a bit of it at play.

@@ShyheimCinema Phil Tippett did the stop motion for the first 2 films.. designed and helped animate the first Jurassic Park dinosaurs (that was cgi but animated with stop motion puppets) various characters in the Star Wars films, and the bug aliens in Starship Troopers (another Paul Verhoeven film). hes a real master of the art.. and recently he released a full stop motion movie hed been working on for like 30 years called MAD GOD... which is like a heroin withdrawal fever dream come to life.

I quickly figured out that RoboCop didn't arrest the first few criminals he dealt with, because they were out, and he could move on to the next crime while another cop cleaned up the mess. That made the best of RoboCop's use.

"I'd buy that for a dollar!" Fun Fact: Nancy Allen first arrived on set when Paul Verhoeven was shooting the deliberately cheesy sitcom "It's Not My Problem" which appears on television screens throughout the film. Allen was initially horrified to think that she had signed on to make a film with an incompetent director. Movie Magic Fact: Most shots of Robocop and the police car show him getting out or preparing to get in. Peter Weller didn't fit into the police car in full costume. When he needed to be in the car, he wore the top part of the costume and sat in his underwear. To maintain the illusion that RoboCop wears the entire suit while inside a car, most shots show his robotic feet exiting first. What Script Fact: For the attempted rape scene, writer Edward Neumeier originally had RoboCop (Peter Weller) shoot past the victim's cheek, hitting and killing the rapist. While getting ready to shoot the scene as scripted, Paul Verhoeven noticed that Donna Keegan's legs were spread apart, giving him the idea to have RoboCop shoot between her legs and hit the rapist in the genitals. Neumeier loved the idea and that was how the scene was shot.

Robocop is a masterpiece of cinema (It’s also a film that could’ve only been made in the 1980’s) extremely smart with a lot of deep social commentary and sight gags! You are lucky to experience the film uncut (That version is the Rated X Cut) The film was edited a lot due to the MPAA demanding cuts for a theatrical releases! the Criterion Laserdisc was the first home video version released uncut (The 1st DVD was actually the original theatrical cut then Criterion released the uncut dvd (I think Criterion held the rights until the license expired) Now the rated X version is available everywhere) The entire original Robocop Trilogy is very strong (Robocop 3 isn’t as bad as the internet mob claim it to be it’s not as good as the first two but, there’s a lot more good then bad imo 👍👍👍

The reason it was set in Detroit is because at that time Detroit was making all the news as the most violent city in America with high murder and crime rates. Robocop is a logical extension of that, and social commentary.

Oh my god, you made a brilliant observation. I've seen this movie a thousand times, and I never noticed it until you pointed it out... In "Eight Mile," a movie also set in Detroit, B Rabbit said of Papa Doc, "He ain't gangsta, his real name is Clarence!" But that point is invalid, because the most gangsta person in the history of movies set in Detroit was named "Clarence." Clarence Boddiker, Kurtwood Smith's character in Robocop. So, upon further review, B Rabbit gets no points for that bar.

I envy you watching this classic for the first time. I still watch the Blu Ray now. Not a bad first Hollywood film for Dutch director Paul Verhoeven, who went on to direct future classics like "Total Recall"(1990), "Basic Instinct"(1992) and "Starship Troopers"(1997). Or, you can check out his "masterpiece": "Showgirls"(1996).😎

All the shots with ED-209 were Stop-motion. Paul Verhoeven wanted to use CGI, but it was too expensive for the budget. The same goes for the shot where Robocop uses thermograph imagery. Hiring the thermograph equipment for the shot was also too expensive, so Paul Verhoeven had all the actors in bodysuits and were painted up and shot in a darkened room to make it look like thermograph was being used.

Great reaction and I also like your music! Fun Fact: this movie was supposed to get an X rating because of the violence. They had to tone it down to make it an R for theaters. A classic! No not really, some locations just work better for a certain vision and it’s just how studios have been doing things for years. But at the end of the day it’s all fictional even if it’s set in a real world place.

Armour with that much padding is going to notice under clothing, also they will probably get you in the head if shooting at the torso doesnt work, ROBOCOP was SO predictive, it's usually worn in riot situations, but police DO wear very similar kevlar armour to this, now in the real world. ROBOCOP ISNT a policeman, he a peace keeping Soldier, like James Bond HE is licenced to kill, later in the film the only reason he can't kill Bodikker, (under those circumstances) is because the programming won't allow it, this is WHY he arrests him instead He doesnt have to run, because his aim with the programmed gun is precise, he never misses, again the gun does most of the crime prevention as is true in the real world in your Country. More proof of how underhanded Jones is, we can assume that he knew about "the Robocop programme" & quietly had the 4th directive inserted into it, unknown to Bob Morton, who was an inexperienced Wizz kid, . ROBOCOP remains to this day the best critique of 80s culture both Corporate & Political, other social commenting films of the time- TRADING PLACES, WALL ST only came at the problem from the one angle-Commodities aka the stock market, ROBOCOP is much more to do with Society at larger ESPECIALLY in "The big City."
