Rodney Dangerfield was the best. He helped a lot of aspiring comics, including Jim Carrey when he was starting out. One of my favorite Dangerfield jokes: “My wife is dumb. How dumb? It takes her an hour and a half to watch 60 Minutes.”

He was an example of never give up on your dreams. He started in comedy back in his 20s but never made it big and became a salesman to support his family but would also wright material when it hit him and after 20+ years he went back to comedy and became a big hit.

Eddie Murphy told a great Dangerfield story. When Eddie was starting out, Dangerfield sat through one of his sets. Eddie asked for feedback. Rodney told him he was to “foul mouthed.” He told Eddie he wouldn’t be successful with all the cursing. Eddie hit it big. Like 3 years later, Eddie went into a men’s restroom at a casino. Dangerfield was at the urinal next to him. Without missing a beat, Dangerfield shrugged and said, “hey, who knew?” Classic….

He also did a couple good movie ie caddieshack, back to school, and meet wally sparks. If you want good laugh material those three are some of his best. Caddieshack is your must see golf movie. Back to school is arguably one of the best college movies of all time. Meet wally sparks is pretty much one of his last surprise hits despite its lack of critical acclaim.

Rodney was truly one of a kind. I'm not easily amused, but Rodney could always make me laugh. I recall his wife speaking about him shortly after his death. She said when he was hospitalized and slipped into a coma, she reached out to the comedy community. She explained Rodney's condition to them and invited each one of them to come to the hospital if they wanted to , to pay their final respect. She said in a matter of minutes, anyone who was anyone in the business, began showing up, literally lined up outside his room,to see him one last time. He was in a coma for days before he passed, yet he was never alone. All of the other comedians took turns and sat with him in shifts. Each one of them would tell Rodney their funniest jokes and even some of Rodney's jokes, just trying to get a response from him, while keeping him company during their vigil. Upon hearing her story, I was taken aback by her graciousness to share him in those final moments, and the amount of love and respect that his peers showed to him as he was transitioning from this life. RIP Rodney 💔🕯🕊

This was great, Shon. If you like Rodney’s quick one-liners, check out another comedian named Steven Wright. He has an extremely dry sense of humor and his punch lines come so fast he is partway into his next joke before the punch line from the last one hits you. My wife and I saw him live in the 90s some time. It was almost impossible to keep up.

Sitting w/Jonny Carson probably the #1 late night talkshow host in the country for 25 years. Jonny did a 20 min monologue at the start of every show w/multi colored curtains behind him. Every stand up comedian for 25 years got gray curtains behind them. No one got color. Except for Rodney Dangerfield, he 'always' got Jonny's multi-colored drapes.
