That message than Numa wrote is actually a Bible verse (John 15:13). They tried to eat the cotton of the seats, but they got sick. They tried to paint the plain with red lipstick, but it wasn't enough. I'm from Chile, and since I was little girl we know about this story. The man of the horse is Chilean and he rode his horse about 10 hours to get help. Years later this man got very sick and all the survivors pay for his surgery to save his life.. ¡Saludos desde Chile!

Ash was actually right at 32:00. The guy that was taking things from the ones that were dying said in an interview that doing that motivated him to stay alive, because he wanted to take something back for the people thay lost a loved one on that mountain. He went door to door, family to family to give them an item from their loved one. The people that went to recue the told him to leave the suitcase ,but he sat on top pf it and told the "if the suitecase's not coming then I'm not coming either". That is a really special person, thinking of the families like that. What a great heart.❤️

The real survivors made cameos in this. They helped make it too, so it was so real to what they lived. This movie is a tribute to all of them and all who sadly didn't make it.

As an Uruguayan myself, I can say this story is deeply rooted in our society, we are very proud of these warriors.

I knew this movie would break you two. It's the most horrifying and inspirational film I've ever watched. All those people are legends. Especially Nando and Roberto.

No trees or water, no life.

The fact that they took out Nando and laid him on the snow saved his life. He had brain swelling and having his head out of the plane in the snow kept the swelling down to what could be survived. Absolutely nothing grows or lives that far above the tree line in the Andes. It was the dead or it was nothing. Lack of viramin C caises scurvy which causes the teeth to fall out, and lastly, this is one hundred thousand times the movie that Alive was.

Some of the real survivors actually act as their own parents on the movie. "Carlitos miguel paes, my son" that is the real carlos miguel paes that survived. He act as his own father.

Actually, most parents came to terms with reality very quickly and they did not resent the survivors for doing what they did. They just felt strange and sad their beloved ones did not return. Some were actually happy because their dead sons helped other ones survive and they saw it as their own kids living through the ones who came back.

I'm so sorry hannah for recommending this movie 😭😭😭 this is truly a heartbreaking story, but so incredibly inspiring and amazing and also a so well done movie, it's worth it

14 of the 16 survivors are alive right now. Inciarte and Methol died (cancer and old age) All of them loved the movie, Inciarte could watch ir before he passed away because they knew he would not make it to the premier. Lots of them do motivational talks and wrote books about it. Roberto is one of the most important children surgeons in the world. Also, lots of them do cameos on the movie. Nando opens the door to his family at the beginning, Roberto is rhe doctor behind himself in the hospital and Carlitos Paez portrays his own father reading the names of the survivors. As he always says, because of the people that fed them with their bodies, thanks to them now they're hundreds more, because of them rhey had sons and grandchildren

I understand what you were trying to say, but I think it is necessary to say that it is easy to think and judge with a full belly, with the perspective that you have food at your disposal. When you're hungry, really hungry, your body doesn't care if what you're eating tastes good, is healthy or even edible. In some situations, morality is a privilege. And I don't want to say that everyone would have done what they did, after all, everyone has their own characteristics and strengths. But not everyone would have survived what they did either. These boys, these men, survived through intelligence and teamwork. And I guarantee you that this movie and everything we felt watching it is not even close to what they went through in real life. this movie is a tribute to the dead ones. choosing numa as the narrator is a way to respect the others that didnt survive; to give them their voice to tell their story, to honor and respect them. anw nando, roberto and carlitos made cameos in this. the survivors are also involved in the making of this movie, making sure that every scene is as accurate as possible.

I was just like Hannah when I saw it for the first time! I’m from Chile and it’s definitely a story that hits to everyone in Latin America. I’m glad that you saw this film. J.A Bayona is a genius! The way he brought this emotional real story to this cinematic and beautiful master piece.

The Andes, the longest and largest mountain range in the world, is practically a frozen desert, there are no animals at high altitudes, nor vegetation.

I've been waiting for this reaction for months! I'm from Uruguay and this story is an important part of my country's history. What a great reaction, thank you so much!! 💙

This film is 95% close to the reality that the survivors experienced, they participated very closely, there is also a book about this tragedy. In the film there were many scenes that could not be filmed because they were too strong and tough. For example, when they started eating human meat, many of them vomited non-stop for days, many of them became sick. They also tried to eat cotton or the leather of the seats. The last woman to survive ( Liliana, the 34-year-old girl who was married to one of the survivors), had an important role as a nurse, many said that she was like a mother to them (especially the youngest ones of 18 and 19 years old). She was a great psychological support, and she consoled them when they were sad. Numa learned a lot from her and he was a kind of nurse after her. She never wanted to eat human meat, she only ate a little bit just 1 day before the Avalanche. Unfortunaly she died. *I'm from Chile and we are separated from the rest of the countries, in the east by the Andes Mountains, in the South by Antarctica, in the West by the Pacific Ocean and in the North by the Atacama Desert. So we have always been isolated from the world in the past, when airplanes did not exist ,many people died trying to cross the mountains, and many planes crashed (when they were basic and just beginning to exist)

Alive was not so accurate. It was the Hollywood version of the story. This one is closer to what actually happened. The survivors said that

Read some of the comments here and I have to leave this here. There was an older 1993 movie called Alive that's fiction "based in true events". It's based on this story. But they changed a lot of things, added things for it to sell well in Hollywood, and both the family and the survivors did NOT like it and do NOT suggest people to go see it. It was done only 20 years after the event, so a lot of these 20 year olds were in their 40s and go see it and they changed what they went through just for the views. It was honestly disrespectful but way more common back then, and when they complained Hollywood just basically told them to get over it. THIS is an adaptation of the real story, with the full blessing of the family, their consultation, and some of the survivors even made cameos on it. So this is not a "Remake", this is not a "new version". This is the real telling of the Andes Airplane Crash Disaster as close as they could to what actually happened per the survivors. Alive is a fictional Hollywood drama based on a true event. So leaving "The older one was better" sort of comments is a bit off and disrespectful to the survivors. Like going to an Anne Frank movie and saying, "I liked the writing on this movie better than that book of hers".

Imagine having the audacity to tell the actual SURVIVORS of that accident that you know better than them which movie best represents the traumatic event they had to endure. The nerve, the disrespect, entitlement and the arrogance to say such a thing! When the survivors say that this film is better, you shut your mouth, period. They're the ones who would know better, don't you think! not some random fools sitting comfortably at home who have certainly never experienced anything like it, is like telling a victim of SA "nooo, you wanted, you just didn't know because you were confused at the time it happened" 😑

I never call a movie as a masterpiece before 5/10 years have passed after it was released, but this is an exception: respectfully written, majesticly directed and edited, so greatly played by actors you can clearly see how much love they brought into their own roles. The whole film is such a highly delicate tribute to those who couldn't go back to their families and to those who actually did as well. For all these reasons, and for many more, this movie is definitely one of the most beautiful masterpiece in the last 5/10 years! Super great reaction from you both. By the way: Ash, your final speech is as precious as the film itself!!!

This movie felt as if we were actually watching it unfold in front of us.

It really is an amazing story worth looking into. Nando Parrado has given speeches about it, and he's described the mindset when his mom and sister died as one without sorrow, only solutions. He was in pure survival mode, and he wasn't about to let his dad lose the whole family.

When Ash was being super jokey in the beginning about their nose and etc I was like, "Oh... he doesn't know this story... that's gonna die down really quick as he hears more" lol. Not the kind of movie where you can keep that up, as it goes more and more tragic. This is a SUPER famous story, and finally they actually did a version that doesn't sensationalize it, or make it hollywood with celebs. Many of the survivors take part in the movie as extras, and it's a version given full blessing by their families as close as possible as to what happened. I know it's a tough watch, but I feel like they deserve it. Hearing their story helps keep them alive.

I think the survivors of the Anders plane crash have received a world record for being the longest surviving in human history this story is amazing insane.

43:06 That's exactly what they say, that they never really needed therapy, all they needed to help them cope they learned it on the mountain. I have a direct, personal experience with this story. I was contemplating suicide and the interactions with two of the survivors (Nando Parrado and Eduardo Strauch) literally saved my life. I have been lucky to meet and exchange emails with some of the survivors, and they are, as you said, the strongest, most admirable people I've ever encountered. I love these reactions because it's amazing to see the impact this has on people, specially those who did not know the story beforehand. You both are amazing and I am definitely suscribing the channel, keep on the great work :)

About them eating the bodies, most families understood that they had to do it in order to survive and didn't resent the survivors, Coco Nicolich's mom said that she was happy because she knew that every survivor has a little piece of her son in them. Most of the world understood them after a while, they even made a press conference after they were rescued to clarify the questions everyone had been asking about what they ate, they said that eating the bodies was just like when Jesus offered his body to his disciples. They were experiencing extreme starving and dehydration, in the Andes there's no life, no trees or bushes, no animals, nothing, so they made a choice based on their needs, it was hard for all of them (specially the Strauch cousins) but that's what they had to do in order to stay alive. Roberto Canessa said that eating was horrible, that in that moment he wished he was dead instead but then he remembered his mother and knew that he had to go back to her. I think we aren't allowed to judge them since we have food and water in our house, we don't know what it's like to not have eaten in a week, the despair of not knowing if you're gonna be rescued soon or at all. The survivors did what they had to do.

What I have learned is that it was pilot error. The Andes were too high for the aircraft they were in so their plan was to fly south and to cross west over the mountain range in an area the mountains aren’t as high. Once they cleared the mountains then they were to turn north for their original destination. However because of the overcast layer of clouds and a strong headwind the pilots miscalculated where they were and turned north too early before they were clear of the mountain range. It wasn’t until they descended through the clouds and saw mountains all around them the pilots realized their mistake. That’s when the pilots went to full power and tried to climb but it was to late

some of the survivors even made cameos, one of the doctors, a person in the airport, the person reading the names for the radio.

I forgot if the movie will address it, but one of the most tragic parts about this story, is that the co-pilots dying words were to tell them where they were. To help them survive. Unfortunately he was wrong. If they had gone the other direction, they would've found help much much quicker, unfortunately his directions made them go the long way to get help and led to many of the deaths.

I live very close to where all these events happened. I've met the man that saved the Uruguayans, he passed away in the recent years.

So glad you guys finally reacted to this! This film destroyed me and yet was equally inspirational. Must be the greatest human survival story in history. Don't think any other film has lived rent free in my head for so long after watching than this one

This movie is one of the few that’s made me feel genuine sadness through the screen. It’s so well made and the fact that it’s based off a true story, is just so powerful. I don’t think I’ve ever felt the kind of anxiety i have with this movie, before. It genuinely made me cry. So happy you reacted to it!

Soy de Uruguay, tenía 11 años, fue una navidad increíble, cuando el 23 de diciembre aparecieron, porque no los encontraron, aparecieron! Estoy emocionada de verlos, como entre ustedes se daban soporte, se acompañaban, había momentos que se preocupan más de lo que estaba sintiendo el otro, que ustedes mismos. Eso es exactamente lo que hizo que estos muchachos lograran está hazaña, el amor! El amor al otro! Formaron una sociedad, la sociedad de la nieve, donde sólo se tenían uno al otro para dar, no había más nada! Hasta el 2023, todos estaban vivos. En julio de ese año falleció José Luis "Coche" Iniciarte, que el director de la película, Bayona fue de España a Uruguay, para mostrarle lo que tenían de la película que aún no se había estrenado. South American from Chile here. That is not the Alps Ash. That is the Andes mountains. They were Uruguayan soccer players on their way to Chile. I remember my mom telling me about this story when I was younger. I couldn't believe it when she told me they had to eat the dead bodies to survive! It's a well known event for South Americans. There was another movie made in the 80s or 90s (I think) called Alive about this. But this is by far the best depiction of the whole events.

Uruguay’s are a different breed of people. The Uruguayan people have been voted the most “Real, Authentic and Loving people in the world. This fight they have and the togetherness lives on today in their futbol team. Ash, time to get the Uruguayan jersey and watch the game tomorrow.

Most of them (but mostly Numa) had an INCREDIBLY hard time accepting that they had to not only eat human flesh (which is a (deadly??) sin (also they were christians)) but to eat their FRIENDS. Getting over that MONUMENTAL task and dying anyways of infection or Hypothermia or something else. Doing that horrible but absolutely necessary thing just to die anyway. This story is so incredibly sad in more ways than i can count. ALL respect and LOVE in the world for these incredible people in this accident, both those who died and those who miraculously survived this absolute DEATH TRAP. I can NOT understand how ANYONE could survive all that but some of them actually did. Just imagine how insanely strong and seriously lucky you have to be survive something like that. I would for real die just by the cold if not the second the plane crashed. probably in the crash tho. I think that was all i had to say about that but one again, ALL respect and LOVE to them. ❤✝🌹❤✝🌹❤✝🌹

Some interesting things that happened after the rescue: Nobody would believe Nando and Roberto crossed the Andes with no climbing gear, no survival gear, barely any clothes, starved (having lost almost half their body weight), no experience (never even saw snow before the crash), and hiked for 8 days straight in very difficult terrain (where one bad step could throw them hundreds of feet over an edge, to tumble down a mountain, or slip and twist an ankle or break a bone) until they LUCKILY bumped into those cattlemen in the foothills of Chile. It is one of the greatest survivor stories and mountaineering achievements in modern age. Any mountaineer who knows this story can only feel shock, disbelief, and/or awe at what Nando and Roberto did. Some mountain climbers tried to replicate Nando and Roberto's climb and hike (but with all the proper gear and experience) and found the task grueling. I believe they also aborted going up the same route Nando and Roberto (and TinTin) took to get to the top (those two having selected a very risky route thanks to their lack of experience) and the experienced mountain climbers found a safer route up instead. Those cattlemen they found were just about to leave the area, too, and wouldn't have found Nando and Roberto in that large and remote area before Nando and Roberto would have probably walked themselves to death. Roberto had actually come down with dysentery from eating rotten meat. The helicopters that went to find the survivors on the 71st day nearly crashed because of the thin air that high up on the mountains in the afternoon, both trying to get there and then leaving. Nando nearly had a panic attack as the helicopter shook and seemed ready to fall apart in the air, stall, or crash into the side of the mountain. Thankfully nothing bad happened, but it frightened everyone on the helicopter terribly. Some survivors thought they would have an ironic death of surviving an impossible plane crash, making it through 70+ impossible days on the mountain, only to die during their rescue in another crash. When the survivors finally got to the hospital, they were carried in on stretchers or wheelchairs. Only Nando walked in. He adamantly refused to be carried in (basically saying his feet carried him out of the mountains, his own two feet would walk him into a hospital). However, because of the curious crowd trying to also force their way in, a security guard refused to let Nando in at first, telling him only the survivors were allowed inside. Nando had to explain to him that he was a survivor. The security guard eventually believed him thanks to the beard, dirty clothes, and Uruguayan accent. Also, when Nando's older sister Graciela (his younger sister Susie died on the plane) arrived at the hospital, the security wouldn't let her or their father in. The moment Nando called out to her from across the hall in his hospital room, his sister pretty much knocked over the security guard to get to her brother. The ending of them all together in a hospital room didn't actually happen. Firstly, the survivors were rescued over the course of two days. Only a few of them left on the first helicopters, which also dropped supplies and rescuers/nurses. Those rescuers stayed with the remaining survivors for another night before the helicopters returned the next day to get them. Three of the survivors (Roy Harley, Coche Inciarte, and Javier Methol) were in pretty bad shape in terms of starvation and infection, so they were placed in critical care. Roy Harley came the closest, nearly dying shortly after he reached the hospital when his vitals plummeted. All three of them probably would have died soon up on the mountain if Nando and Roberto hadn't found help when they did. They were that close to death. Some survivors were sent to different hospitals. Also, many of the survivors were given clearance for being healthy enough to leave the hospital and travel earlier than others. Several survivors and their families were able to have a Christmas party at a hotel. Nando left some time after Christmas to just be somewhere with his remaining family and be alone (Nando had a really hard time once he came down off the mountain). Others checked into hotels with their family. Some even traveled back immediately to Uruguay. One of the boys who died from his crash injuries but survived for a month, nicknamed Vasco, was never eaten. So his body was intact. Vasco loved his father and cried for him, even as he died. The survivors revealed Vasco's wish was not to stay on the mountain. He desperately wanted to go home. But the Chilean government refused to let any of the bodies be removed. They were instead buried in a mass grave near where the crash happened, deep in the Andes. The father of Vasco heard the story from the survivors, and, determined to bring his son home, asked the priest, who went to the mountain to perform final rites, to secretly mark the body bag of his son. The priest agreed. Not long after the burial team left the mountain, the father of Vasco stole his way into Chile with a team, took his son's body off the mountain, and tried to smuggle it illegally back to Uruguay. He got caught for grave-robbing and was arrested. An outcry from many in Chile, Uruguay and more made them quickly drop the charges and let him go. Vasco was able to be buried back home in Uruguay near his family as he wished. The survivors intentions after rescue was to head home and privately tell each family what had happened on the mountain. They wanted to treat the dead and their families with respect and consideration for their feelings. They didn't want a media circus or for them to find out in any way that might make it more upsetting. So they refused to tell anyone but their own families, their doctors and a priest what they had done on the mountain. However, someone in the Chilean military or rescue team leaked pictures of the dead bodies/bones around the plane and spread news of cannibalism. It was everywhere and it upset the families and survivors. The whole thing became sensationalized and rumors and horrible lies began to spread. The survivors weren't able to do what they originally planned and, instead, returned to Uruguay where they gave a press conference as soon as they got off the plane and headed to their old Catholic school, the school their rugby team represented. There they told their story to family, friends, and the press for several hours. At the end of it the audience was in tears. When they opened the floor for questions, nobody asked anything and gave them a standing ovation instead. In the days/weeks/months afterwards they did go to each family to give a more personalized account of anything they wanted to hear and return the belongings to them. The survivors still gather together for anniversaries and other events. They are still friends and always have the others back when they need something. Most of them have traveled back to the crash site to pay respects. A stone mound with a cross was made over the grave of the dead in a place away from the paths of avalanches. To this day it is still intact despite it being very active with avalanches during the winter. Nando's father had his ashes taken there to be beside his wife and daughter. A black obelisk was also built there recently to honor the dead, created by the families of the dead. One of the survivors, Eduardo Strauch, takes part in guided tours to the site to tell the story of their survival and to tell the stories of his dead friends. There is also a museum in Uruguay about this survival story. That's just some of what happened in the story AFTER they were found. There is so much not even covered or expanded on in the movie that happened in the 72 days they were trapped on the mountain. You should listen to Nando Parrado's TED Talk about the experience.

The rancher who found and helped bring Nando and Roberto to civilization was called Sergio Catalan. The survivors kept in contact with him for years and even pooled money to pay for a hip replacement. He passed away in 2020 at the age of 91.

I fucking loved this one you guys. I was born in Sweden in 1991 but my parents came here from Chile in 1980, so they were right there when this happened. It was a constant worry throughout society what happened to the guys. I have to say kudos for watching this epic of a movie, rollercoaster of true raw emotions really, and that you kept it in spanish. Too many reactors opted for the english dubbed version which is quite frankly just a disgusting way of watching it really. A little side note that I dont know if anyone has mentioned yet, the man in the end announcing the names of the boys from the crash is one of the actual survivors of the real event, I just cant remember which one. I climbed Aconcagua (tallest point in the Andes). I cannot stress to you how COLD it is. I remember being at the base of the mountain for our first night and it was minus 15 degrees F overnight. Base camp at 14,000 feet (Plaza de Mulas) was cold as well-the only time it was somewhat warm was if the sun was directly overhead. Keep in mind this was during the summer season (December) so i don't know what time of year this occured, the winter would be 10 times worse... With today's gear that keeps you warm, it works to an extent-i cannot imagine what 1970s gear and regular clothes would have been like for them...

I'm from URUGUAY . I remember that day in 1972. I was a secondary school student and it was at night when our History Teacher told us, crying, that that day a nephew of his had fallen on a Uruguayan Air Force plane in the Andes Mountains when he was heading to Chile with his group. of fellow "Old Christians" rugby players to play for Chile! It is the most painful tragedy we have suffered and that we always remember! And having found survivors after 71 days (we thought they were all dead!) on December 22, 1972, was a true Christmas Miracle! Thank you for your respect for everything they had to go through and even... eat... forced by the need for survival! An affectionate greeting to you from URUGUAY!

I'm Brazilian, not Uruguayan, but I did read/ watch a lot about this case. I'm always surprised people don't know that many movies (like this one) are based on real stories. Maybe it's because I read a lot about accidents, criminal cases, tragedies, war & etc since I was a kid. (I probably shouldn't have because I started really young, but I did)

There was a movie in 1993 called Alive, but this is a more authentic and dignified story of the Andes plane crash survivors.

Again, I'm chilean. The Andes above certain highs has no life, not even condor vultures nor trees, the were too high where the temperatures are around 30 degrees Celsius below zero. It's also too high for the poor penguins to climb 😂 Sorry, this story is so sad but the mention of the penguins made me think about those Madagascar commando penguins 😅 Seriously, you have to be professionally equipped for high mountain to go up the Andes

When this story was first adapted to the screen in 'Alive!' in the 90s, NA audiences couldn't understand what was the moral dilemma of eating human flesh if your life depended on it. Uruguayans are deeply catholic so it was taboo. It's interesting seeing different backgrounds reacting differently to this dilemma

Actually, in one of the interview someone ask if they are still in contact, and they are obviously but one of the survivors said that they have a two group chats, because the 1st one was a mess they have to do another one xD, that was so funny but wholesome to me like even after all this time their bond is unbreakable.

I say this every time I hear of this story - and not to discount the other survivors and the efforts made by those who didn't survive - but Parrado and Canessa's will and determination in reaching help and rescuing their friends is one of the most epic, most inspiring things I have ever heard to this day. Truly incredible feat of strength and willpower.

Well done Hannah for getting through the movie. It's not an easy watch but doing so gives these heroes the respect they deserve.

It was indeed a pilot error. It's not fully explained in the movie, but they decided to not fly straight to Santiago but to go south for a bit, cross the Andes in a safer area, then go up north towards Santiago. But the bad weather led to a navigation error and they turned north too soon without noticing. The air traffic controller, unaware of this, thought they were approaching the airport and told them to lose altitude. When they noticed their mistake, it was too late.

Yes, this is a true story. This is a great movie and all, but what matters is that this really happened up there and these young men had to do what they had to do to survive. It`s unbeliavable. Cheers guys, Argentinian here.

I was born and raised in Colombia and I have traveled the Andes from Venezuela to Tierra del Fuego I have been to the crash site and I got overwhelmed with emotions, it was rough. The Andes are magnificent and gorgeous and loved by many but they are also deadly

I was 11 years old when this happened. It seemed to answer the question of what people would do in a situation where cannibalism would become a possibility. That was a common question people had before this event happened. There have been a few different movies about this but this one is the most realistic and gut wrenching. It should have won an Oscar. Ash was on point when he said that he thought these people had more to teach than therapists. Actually, therapists take experiences like this to help give their clients strength to get through what it is they're going through.
