Return of the Jedi was absolutely AMAZING in the theaters in the 80s. Imagine an entire crowd going wild at all the pivotal moments... yeah, it was insane. Even the remastered versions were released into modern theaters and it still packed the theaters. A truly amazing movie!

The footage for the speeder bikes was a guy with a steady cam walking through the Redwoods in California shooting at somewhere between 1-5 frames per second. So when you speed it up, it looks around 100mph. Then the actors are shooting the action on speeder bike props with blue screen behind them. Lots of air fans too. (Interviews from the documentary "Empire of Dreams", which is amazing btw. It follows George through high school all the way to working on the prequels)

@Marijchu That what you are watches were not the movies shown in the cinema. All 3 Films have al list of change over the years. For example in endscene with the ghost of Yoda, Ben Knobi und "Vader" they replace the original Actor Sebastian Shaw with Hayden Christensen. 1977: In May, Star Wars was theatrically released 1980: In May, The Empire Strikes Back was theatrically released 1981: In April, Star Wars was re-released, with the addition of the subtitles "Episode IV" and "A New Hope". 1983: In May, Return of the Jedi was theatrically released. 1985: The original Star Wars film was re-released on VHS, LaserDisc, and Capacitance Electronic Disc (CED) with an improved audio mix. The LaserDisc and CED sped the film up by 3% to fit onto a single disc. 1993: The original trilogy was released on LaserDisc as "The Definitive Collection". With the exception of a new THX audio mix, scratch and dirt removal, and color balance changes, it matched the original theatrical releases.[7] 1995: The original trilogy was re-released on VHS with THX audio, advertised as the final release of the theatrical versions. 1997: The "Special Edition" of the original trilogy was released theatrically from January through March for the 20th anniversary of Star Wars. This release featured the first significant changes, which were intended to prove that Industrial Light & Magic could effectively produce CGI visual effects for the prequel trilogy. 2004: In September, the original trilogy was released on DVD. Further significant alterations were made, including replacing Latin script text with Aurebesh. 2006: In September, Limited Edition DVDs of the 2004 versions of the original trilogy were re-issued; these contain the original unaltered versions on bonus discs. These match the 1993 LaserDisc release, but remove the subtitles Episode IV - A New Hope. 2011: The original and prequel trilogy were released on Blu-ray. Alterations were made to all six films. 2015: The original and prequel films were released digitally to streaming services. They are identical to their Blu-ray release, except for changes to the opening logos and fanfares. 2019: The original and prequel films, along with The Force Awakens and Rogue One, were released in 4K resolution on Disney's streaming service, Disney+. Color, compositing, and minor effects adjustments were made to all three films of the original trilogy. And now wait 16 Years bevor watching the next Episode, just kidding.

The best moment in all of star wars for me, is when luke takes of the helmet of the worst, the most frightening, most evil person in the entire galaxy, only for it to be an old, sad and broken man behind the mask. This scene is so well done.
@jeffburnham6611
@jeffburnham6611 3 жыл бұрын
And George Lucas never should have gone back in and messed with the ending, so that sad and broken man is seen standing as a proud Jedi again, next to Obi-Wan and Yoda (not reshooting the scene and replacing Sebastian Shaw with Hayden).

The hang glider Ewok was Felix Silla, met him at a convention years ago. He was upset that the others got several costumes but he only got one. After his character was shot down, he grabbed a stick and swung on a vine to strike a stormtrooper on the head. Trooper went down, got up just in time to be hit again by the Ewok swinging in from the other direction. Felix said he looked over and the entire crew was laughing behind the camera. The shots never made it in the movie…

For us a lot of us old fans who saw the originals in the theaters, the prequel’s are watchable, but flawed in some places - the sequel’s go down hill story wise, but it’s always fun to get the go back into this universe. The best of the “new” movies are Rogue One & Solo & then The Mandalorian is as close to the old StarWars as it gets - I hope you keep watching these movie in the order they were released . Looking forward to watching them with you!

Some of these FX shots were from the Special Editions that came out in 1999. The more elaborate CGI shots, like all the celebrations on all the different planets at the end, were from those editions. The shot at the beginning that you commented on of C3P0 and R2D2 at the huge door was a shot they “improved”. The original shot didn’t have that long zoom in down to the droids. Even still, the FX they pulled off at the time it was originally made still hold up really well.

Mari, not sure if anyone has mentioned. The sets were hand painted for the wide shots, also lots of scale model work and life size sets. About Leia's bikini: No, she was not happy about it. In the new trilogy, Carrie Fisher was there to warn Daisy Ridley never to let them force her to do anything as degrading as that. She also demanded the right to kill Jabba herself in the movie. When parents asked Carrie Fisher what they were supposed to tell their kids about that revealing costume, she said, "Tell them the truth--a big, slimy slug MADE me wear it, and I killed him for it." (One of my favorite movie memories was seeing this in the theater, and everybody jumping up and cheering when Vader grabbed the emperor.)

Does Luke turn to the Dark Side if he kills his father? - Well, if he does so out of rage: yes.... There's a reason why Yoda initially deemed him "too old" to be trained as a jedi: his emotional development has already happened. He will never have the same detachment they had.... 3. About the actor who played Darth Vader: David Prowse was the man in the suit. He's been playing Vader for 3 movies, but because his voice wasn't epic enough, they had him dubbed by the infamous James Earl Jones (also Mufasa from The Lion King). When Vader removed his mask.... that was supposed to be David's big moment.... the moment when HE would become the man behind the epic villain in front of the world.... but instead they had him replaced with Sebastian Shaw.... Same for the "force ghost" scene at the end! Although later they inserted Hayden Christensen, who played Anakin Skywalker in 2 of the 3 prequels. 4. About Leia being Luke's sister.... .... remember you yelling "Smooch! Smooch! Smooch!" during episode 4???? Man, sounds now like you've been watching waaaaaaaaaaaaay too much Game of Thrones, doesn't it? Also.... Leia has always known but she still put her tongue down his throat in front of Han in episode 5? Maybe she's been watching too much of it as well....

There are arguments to this day about whether Darth Vader was always planned to be Luke's father. I don't think it's an accident that Vader literally means father, but on the other hand it does seem from watching A New Hope like they weren't setting up that scenario. One alternative is that Darth Vader more generally represents the 'Dark Father' archetype that's appeared in a few other movies. But then, there's usually a 'light' son in those movies too, and Luke means light, so...

There’s some cgi that was added in the rereleased versions, but it’s most heavy in the first movie. In this and Empire, it’s mostly used as small “enhancements.”

25:05 in the original version you don't see Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker's Force ghost but the actor you saw when the mask came off: Sebastian Shaw. Sorry if this information was already shared by someone else but I didn't feel like checking 374 earlier comments 😄 May the Force be with you!

Hi, Marijchu! I'm glad you enjoyed your experience discovering this trilogy. The Skywalker Saga constitutes a modern mythology for three generations. I love Jabba! I get a kick out of how he's called Pizza the Hutt in "Spaceballs"! Lol. He is the pure embodiment of the id. The Hutts are the most powerful criminal cartel in the Star Wars galaxy controlling a vast portion of space outside the jurisdiction of the Core government be it Republic or Empire. They always represent a third power in the galaxy. Jabba's palace and lifestyle is modeled after Western concepts about the decadence and opulence of the cultures of the Orient during medieval and early modern history: Arab Caliphs, Persian Satraps, Ottoman Sultans, Tatar Emirs, Mongol Khans, Russian Czars and Indian Rajas. The Sail Barge is, of course, modeled after piratical swashbucklers; Jabba even has Luke walk the plank! Leia's barely-there slave outfit is one of her signature looks and is a very popular cosplay that was famously made light of on the TV show "Friends". Many impressionable pre-pubescent boys sprouted hair on their chest at the sight of her and carried a torch for the Princess well into adulthood! Lol. Boba Fett, the dreaded bounty hunter who delivered Han to Jabba, was long rumored to have survived falling into the gullet of the Sarlacc in the non-canonical Expanded Universe. The second season of "The Mandalorian" provides a definite answer on the subject! Femi Taylor, who played the Twi'lek dancer Jabba feeds to his pet Rancor, returned for dancing reshoots inserted into that horrific CGI musical number performed by Jabba's house band. Despite it being some 15 years later, her physique was unchanged and matched the old footage seamlessly! The two pale elderly gents in purple robes and headgear in the Emperor's entourage are part of the Imperial Ruling Council who handle daily administrative tasks. Believe it or not, action figures were made of them and they were officially named in a canon novel called "Tarkin" by James Luceno. Their names are Janus Greejatus and Kren Blista-Vanee. They're just pasty old bureaucrats but highly sought figures for Star Wars collectors! The Leia twist was hinted at in "Empire" when she sensed Luke from afar while he was dangling from the bottom of Bespin! Subtle sensations like that indicate that she has latent Force-sensitivity and has a connection to Luke. However, she never consciously manipulated the Force, never underwent training and never thought of herself as anything other than an Alderaanian princess which is why Vader never perceived anything amiss about her. Warwick Davis, who played the Ewok named Wicket who first comes upon Leia, has shown up in every Star Wars movie since in a cameo! He is the franchise's lucky penny! You may know him as the star of "Willow". Primitive guerilla fighters defending their native territory like the Ewoks have often had an advantage over a more technologically advanced, disciplined foe like the Empire. The Celts defeated the Romans, the Mongols defeated the Chinese, the Americans defeated the British, the Vietnamese defeated the Americans and the Afghans defeated the Russians. The fish-headed Mon Calamari Rebel Admiral Ackbar is a fan favorite and his delivery of the line, "It's a trap!", became a popular meme to this day! The Rebel pilot Wedge Antilles, played by Denis Lawson, survived two Death Star assaults and the battle on the ice world of Hoth! In the Expanded Universe that is no longer canonical, he became a legendary flight instructor for the New Republic's Flight Academy. The CGI tweaks to the remastered "Return of the Jedi" are the most egregious in the series including that dreadful CGI musical number in Jabba's palace, a beaked Sarlacc and a young Anakin Force-ghost that replaced middle-aged Sebastian Shaw with young Hayden Christensen. However, you do get a glimpse of the city-planet Coruscant during the galaxy-wide celebration. Coruscant, the Galactic Capital, is completely industrialized from surface to core! Appearing prominently throughout the Prequel trilogy, Coruscant was most definitely inspired by Isaac Asimov's capital world of Trantor from the "Foundation" series.
