24:40 The idea of that scene is that Pippin intentionally made Treebeard go there so he would see the devastation, call the other ents and the beauty of the scene is that they didn't need a single word to know what they were going to do, they all just knew after seeing their dead friends. Basically they had Treebeard go there so they wouldn't even need to talk things through

Gollum is essentially his second personality brought on by the Ring. After 500 years of the Ring’s corruption. It’s very based on addiction.

It always felt like a dissociative personality disorder to me. A way to cope with the loneliness as well as help him do/justify things he normally wouldn't. Gollum even said he kept him alive, or something like that.

@@Raven5150I think Chris here has the best explanation. We have no information that Smeagol has any disabilities or illnesses to go off of, so without that info it’s safer to assume that the persona of Gollum was a trauma based reaction. Smeagol murdered his own cousin, Deagol, who was honestly like his only friend. The little backstory we have about Smeagol is that he came from a wealthy family - in the land of the River Folk - and was generally nasty, greedy, entitled. While technically a race that was very similar to being a Hobbit, Sméagol’s character made him very susceptible to being corrupted by the Ring. After killing Deagol, he was ostracized and fled to the mountains, enduring hundreds of years alone in dark, dank conditions, not really safe since he’d likely be killed if found. Those conditions mixed with his past experiences are a perfect cocktail of trauma and fear to create a coping mechanism - Gollum. Gollum being the stronger, heartless persona to justify what they had to do and help Smeagol feel like someone is watching over him, keeping him company, keeping him safe. Upon being captured by Frodo and Sam, Frodo’s genuine empathy and compassion brought Smeagol to the surface, because Frodo and Sam kinda took the place of Gollum’s purpose. This is why when he felt betrayed he brought Gollum back, Gollum assuring him that nobody else can fulfill the role. And from then on, we know that we never see Smeagol again - except MAYBE after his first fight with Frodo in Shelob’s lair… for a split second, before trying to attack Frodo again.

Everyone says they should have stayed in Edoras… the wood-timbered structures with the wooden palisades, open on all sides. They would have been starved and slaughtered. At Helm’s deep, with their backs literally against the wall, they stood a chance.

Actually, there was never a though of remaining at Edoras. They went out to take on the forces of Isengard head on, but a man who'd been on the Western front found them and told them about the enormous army of Saruman, so they redirected to Helm's Deep.

You need to remember that the various kingdoms are far apart and there is no easy way to communicate quickly! Unlike a lot of fantasies (and other movies) Tolkien took great care to take into account things like distances and exactly how long it would take to cover those distances on foot/horseback etc. If Gondor just popped up to hep Rohan it would make no sense. Really good fantasy (and this is probably the best) pays attention to detail and adds as much realism to the fantastic aspects as possible. It makes the world feel more authentic.

“I haven’t seen the good…it’s just not around you” Remember the shire? That was the good lol the rest of the world can be good as well without all the evils present. There is much good, and this movie does SUCH an incredible job at making you forget it. They’ve come so far in their journey that home feels like a distant memory covered in shadow, and that’s what we as an audience remember. Such a perfect set of movies that put us exactly in the place where the characters are, so well done.

To be fair to Theoden, there was not enough time to ask for help, send riders and help to arrive. They only had until nightfall. There was truly no time. And even if they did ask for help from Gondor which was the only reasonable option, the truth is that Gondor was fighting their own battles in various places, and was in a very hard predicament protecting their borders and would not be able to help either. Even the elves were in a similar position protecting their own borders and could not spare men. The elves never came in the books by the way. They were indeed alone in this.

True enough however those were technically 30 Dunadain men, basically Aragorn's men and they came to the aid of their chieftain indeed. 30 men far from an army.@@VadulTharysThere was no time to call them either to be honest, but Galadriel foresaw it much earlier and is said to have been the one to have called them there. Point stands though, elves and Gondorians were far away doing their own battles and could not join in time, nor would they have been able to. This was a very dark and grim outlook for a battle, with no hope being seen on the far horizon. If not for Gandalf bringing the Rohirrim we know what would have happened.

Yes, all elves are immortal. They can be killed , die of sickness, or die of sorrow. In Arwen's case (and all of Elrond's children), there are special circumstances that allow them to choose becoming mortal.
@movoo6077
@movoo6077 10 ай бұрын
context is everything: Elrond is not being weird. Elves are immortal, unless slain in battle or die of grief/broken heart. An elf who falls in love with a mortal must surely die, that after thousands of years of pain from losing the one loved. Elrond is hoping to spare her that and also spare himself that grief. in refering to him having her love, he simply stating that he does not want that fate for his daughter, who others would live as long as the world last. I hope that helps you to get a better understanding of the situation; there is no real father who would try to save his daughter such a fate.
@similarrose5811
@similarrose5811 10 ай бұрын
It’s not exactly that. Not all elves have the ability to become mortal, only half elven (or part elven) like Arwen are offered the gift of men. Elves don’t die. Their physical bodies may die but their souls are bound to Arda. Only men (and other mortals maybe) go to be with God after they die. So Arwen’s fate is particularly grievous for Elrond because when she dies he’ll never see her again, not even in the Halls of Mandros (afterlife where the elf spirits hang out).

Right, unlike the normality of a daughter meeting a man,marrying him, and parting ways with her family. This is a 6500 year old man with a 3900 year old daughter having spent thousands of years together (and his wife was killed by orcs) if Arwen chooses mortality she’s not just choosing a shorter life, mortals and elves have different afterlives. When she chooses to be mortal she’s choosing to leave Elrond and her entire race in the afterlife as well. So that’s understandably a whole other ballgame to just be supportive of, not to mention Elrond knows she could choose mortality and then Aragorn die in the war and she doesn’t even get her life with him anyway. From my understanding

@@movoo6077I have more context to add for you - let’s have a look at Elrond & his daughter Arwen (& Aragorn by extension) therefore we must look at Elrond’s Twin Brother Elros, they both were half-elven brothers who can choose to be mortal or immortal because of their parents(Eärendil and Elwing) both half elven made a great sacrifice and went to Valinor to ask for help against Morgoth(who was making everything worse than a living hellscape for 100s of generations) which lead to the greatest events in the early first and second age. Instead of being punished, the valar listened to them, that led to a great hosts of Valar and Maiar And Vanyar Elves went to Middle Earth that laid waste to Beleriand. After the War Of Wrath, the valar rewarded them for their sacrifices. They can choose to be elf or men, including their children. They chose immortally, but never return to Middle Earth because they thought that their twin sons had died. But they didnt die. Elrond chose to be immortal while his twin brother Elros chose to be mortal. He founded the Kingdom of Numenor. He lived in Numenor Island and blessed with a long life that include his descendants Those men who fought for the war were rewarded a long life but not their families or children. Only the family of Elrond can choose to be immortal or mortal in which Arwen did. Aragorn is the direct descendant of Elros, thats why he has a long life. The average lifespan of a Numenorean at their height was a few thousand years maximum! Now remember too that half elves are a common thing and whenever they did come together it was always significant !❤❤❤ Remember this is the SHORT version, there are so many moving parts that will make you want to dive into the books or the audio books or even do reaction videos to the famous lore videos by the biggest lore channels out there! Nothing would have existed if Tolkiens works never hit the light of day as they were meant to stay private and sometimes be shared with his children and so on. No Game Of Thrones. No Skyrim. No ElderScrolls, No World Of Warcraft, no Dungeons&Dragons. None of it. Not even Star Wars. Not even Harry Potter! They took inspiration from his works which were souly to give back a forgotten history of the Anglo Saxons that had their culture & history destroyed as the larger empires were riding around them. His works reflect the Elder Edda(Norse) The Kalevala(Finnish) and the Welsh people from Wales as well as Irelands cultures of the Tuatha De Danaan as well! His languages are fully fleshed out too resembling Finnish & Welsh • By the way Elrond is around 6870-8000 years old & nearly a full Elf year (as they age very very differently to Men) is close to 144 man years(solar years for them). but if you want a more true age you must realize that he may be 8000 but in human years after the sun and moon were created from the flower from of the two trees of Valinor as well as one fruit from the other of the two trees; they experience the TIME and the way men experience it but their clock is different! They live as long as the world/Arda/Ëa does. Essentially. Which is why they are so in synch with the world around them and the nature responds to them ! Think of when Legolas walked ontop of all that snow on the Mountain of Caradhras!! They continue to endure as long ad the world itself does. (Arda) and speaking of age, Legolas is also 3000+years old by the time he becomes a member of The Fellowship Of The Ring! If you look back on the original trilogy movies: The fellowship had a 3000year old Elven PRINCE in their party. And a clandestine angelic being who was Gandalf originally known Olòrin to those such as Galadriel who knew him when she lived in Valinor, Elrond also knew would be one of the only others who’d know this save Círdan The Shipwright(Oldest Elf in the world but even he was a few generations down from the original elvish peoples to awake to the stars) & kin to Thingol who also is a semi distant cousin to Legolas as Legolas’ grandfather was the close cousin to Thingol(same with Galadriel’s Husband Celeborn through his father, their capital within Lothlòrien was named after his father(Caras Galadhon) Galadhon being the name indicating that which belongs to the father. And a 87 year old Númenorean man named Aragorn!, a 335 year old Dwarven Prince named Gimli. And as a microcosm they resembled the coalition of all the races of middle earth uniting under one banner which is another reason it sort of metaphysically set into motion the world uniting at the macrocosm ! Galadriel's Phial (gift to Frodo) is something really special. light & dark have a spiritual dimension in Tolkien. way back before the First Age Valinor was lit by two very special Trees that waxed & waned in opposition to each other. a master craftsman Elf named Fëanor fashioned three gems that captured their light, the Silmarils. (And it’s same power and light was drawn into it from the very firmament where it now stands amongst the stars as Eärendil himself (Elrond’s father stands watch over The Doors Of Night where Melkor still is held until fate holds him no longer.) Everyone who saw them was captivated by them, even the Melkor(Morgoth); the first Dark Lord. Wars were fought over them called the Kinstrife after Morgoth had the Trees destroyed the Silmarils were the only light from them left and he stole them as you may remember, they changed hands a few times & eventually one was left after one fell into the sea & another was lost in a pit of magma. a Half Elf named Eärendil (the first one! Who was Elrond’s father.) came into its possession & sailed it to Valinor as a gift to the Valar to ask for their help in defeating Morgoth, which they did. the Valar turned it into a star & hung it in the sky with Eärendil as its guardian. the fountain of Galadriel's Mirror is lit by light captured from the star Eärendil & her Phial has water from the fount. I've left out about 90% of the story but it's quite important & central to the story of Middle Earth. for her to give the Phial to Frodo is quite extraordinary. its light does burn & blind Shelob (that's the spider's name) but doesn't kill her outright. oh also, before he was put in the sky to guard the last Silmaril Earendil had two children, Elrond & his brother Elros the first King of Numenor. Tolkien's lore is deep & vast & the Silmarils are at the center of it. The Star of Eärendil is the light that shines in the horizon both in the morning and the evening. It consists in a boat raised by the Valar and led by Eärendil, who carries a shining Silmaril while watching the Doors of Night. The Door of Night was a portal in the distant Uttermost West that leads to heaven, and/or the Void. Eärendil's ship Vingilot was taken by the Valar from the rim of the world, passed through the Door and was lifted into the "oceans of heaven". PS: Eärendil is ELROND’s half Vanyar Elf half human father, that father was the son of the great Tuor of the great stories of The Children Of Húrin book!❤❤❤❤ Aragorn is a CLOSE descendant of a direct bloodline to Elros(Elrond’s Twin Brother) The title of half elven (Peredhel) was due to the combined history of Beren&Lúthien, his mother Elwing was the granddaughter of Lùthien! Eärendil was the husband of Elwing. The true half elf; son of the best elvish women ever who rescued hundreds from the highest of elvish kingdoms(Gondolin); her name is Idril & one of the best most powerful men around named Tuor. Who later on when they went to Valinor together through their own way lead to him choosing to be counted as One Of The Eldar for Idril. Eärendil did the same for Elwing. ❤

But Trolls are only counterfeits, made by the Enemy in the Great Darkness, in mockery of Ents, as Orcs were of Elves. We are stronger than Trolls. We are made of the bones of the earth. As for Aragorn being 87 and being one of the Dunedain, he's a descendant of a race of Men called Numenoreans. Their story is inspired by Atlantis in that they also were a great, advanced civilization on an island that got destroyed and sunk in a cataclysm thousands of years ago. Numenor actually founded Gondor and another kingdom in the north called Arnor (which was later destroyed), which is why Aragorn is the true Heir to Gondor. Before their fall, the "gods" rewarded the Numenoreans for helping them defeat an enemy by making them basically superhumans, since they were described as being taller and stronger than men from all other kingdoms, along with being technologically advanced and having extended lifespans.

Regarding ents being slow first and fast later, it is not a contradiction but a deliberate thing. Tolkien described it as a difference between a cow, quietly chewing grass while lying on a pasture and a raging bull in full attack (sorry, I don´t have an English copy of LOTR handy, so I only paraphrase). They take very long to decide but if they do, they can act as fast as coming flood.

As you could see from the scenes in Gondor, they were busy fighting their own battles. You should look at a Middle Earth map. Gondor is right next to Mordor. Where both scenes are taking places are pretty far away from one another--remember, they are on horseback as the fastest transportation. Rohan is being attacked by the Uruk Hai army from Saruman (Isengard is close to Rohan and so is Fangorn Forest), while Gondor is being attacked by orcs from Mordor and the Nazgul from Minas Morgul--right on Gondor's border. Gondor is dealing with Sauron himself. That is the point of the Two Towers. Having two strong enemies forces a two front war, so the good side can't pool their resources and unite.. The only things that turned this around were Gandalf coming back and the Ents getting into the fight. (The trees in the sudden forest are half trees/ half Ents that decide to get into the action.) The elves coming is neither here nor there, as they won without them in the book.

You have to understand Elrond’s perspective. He has foreseen that Frodo will not survive which makes it unlikely that Sauron will be destroyed and Aragorn made king. It was an expression of how resilient Hobbit temperaments are and it was fairly true to the books. Since PJ cut the Scouring of the Shire, there was no point showing Merry and Pippin realizing the implications of Saruman having Shire-grown pipeweed, but even in the books they both filed that under "To Be Dealt With When We Get Home" before proceeding to enjoy the luxury of Longbottom Leaf on the rubble of Isengard.

Female dwarves beards are their mark of beauty to a male dwarf. Their fertility was also another for growing strong and thick haired children. The reason they don't bunker down in helms deep is because of food. The cost of fortifying and upkeeping it with a full garrison is more than can be afforded. It's in a valley surrounded by mountains that block most of the sun so crops won't grow without massive effort. Dwarf women were a bit taller, had broad hips, were big breasted, had the most amazingly soothing voices, and were FANATICALLY loyal to the man they loved. Their beards were silky and smooth like their hair, their eyes glowed with passion and were said to be breathtaking to look upon. But they were rare, for every 10 males born a female would be born so a married dwarf was considered a rich man. Present a dwarf female to a human 5k-10k years ago she would have been the ideal. 7:57 I imagine there are several reasons why the capital of Rohan was Edoras and not Helm's Deep: - Tradition. Similar to the reason why the United States capital is near the east coast instead of somewhere slightly safer like Kansas. - Helm's Deep is essentially a box canyon. Edoras is close enough to the same mountain range that the mountains can be seen, but there is plenty of open space around it. The people of Rohan rely heavily on mounted combat; sticking those mounts in a box canyon would reduce their effectiveness. - The kingdom of Rohan is divided into the East Mark and West Mark. The capital (Edoras) is located between them, on the southern end of Rohan. - Edoras is near the Snowbourne river, which meets up with the Entwash (river) that eventually flows to Osgiliath (Minas Tirith). I haven't seen any maps showing other settlements/villages, but I suspect most of them are near those rivers. - If I understand the maps correctly, the Entwash eventually reaches Osgiliath in Gondor. (Osgiliath is the ruined city next to the fortress of Minis Tirith.) - Edoras is about 1/6th closer to its ally's capital (Minas Tirith) than Helm's Deep. - Helm's Deep was closer to Dunland. The Dunlendings are the people you see swearing allegiance to Saruman. 9:55 Elves can be killed in battle, but otherwise they are immortal. 12:26 They have builders, just not of the same skill level as those who built Osgiliath and Minas Tirith. Minas Tirith was built by the Númenóreans (who Aragorn is descended from). Think of the Númenóreans as Rome at the height of it power and technology. At the time The Two Towers is happening, the world of men is similar to the Dark ages. At the end of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, they enter something similar to the Middle Ages. (A subtle visual clue is the material the buildings of Osgiliath and Minas Tirith are made of. They are much more like concrete than stone and mortar.) I don't know if the Dwarves in Lord of the Rings are better builders than the Númenóreans were, but I suspect they aren't. I think I read somewhere that the technology of the Dwarves had also diminished. 16:32 There is NO POSSIBILITY that Théoden would offer command to Aragorn. Théoden is mostly driven by two things: (1) protecting his people and (2) not being ashamed to enter the "halls of his fathers" (their version of Valhalla). But even if Théoden offered command to Aragorn, he would never accept it. Aragorn is wise enough to know that it would completely ruin Théoden as a king from that point on. And don't forget that Théoden's son and heir had recently been killed. From a modern-day perspective, King Théoden could be seen as a bad leader. But when you look at the cultural context, Théoden is doing the only thing he can do to preserve his people. They may die in the process, but they will die as Rohirrim and not weaklings. (The people of Rohan call themselves "Rohirrim" which translates to "Horse Lords"). 17:00 I don't know if Tolkien described the Ents as having noses. I suspect this may have been an addition for the film to make them seem less monstrous and more kind. The only thing I know about the creation of the Ents is that the Elves taught them to speak. Its possible "teaching" them to speak involved the formation of a mouth and nose. The sounds the Ents make when talking suggest they breathe to speak. 17:50 The age of the available soldiers has a lot to do with who IS NOT at Helm's Deep at that moment. The "Riders of Rohan" are their main fighting force, and we don't see them until later. I don't know for sure, but I suspect the absence of the Riders is due mostly to Wormtongue's/Saruman's mischief. 19:30 Oh, yes. Things are getting interesting. Although the Elves are peace loving, they are immortal. By the time of the films, there are still a few elves as old as Galadriel (over 8,000 years). I think most of the great Elven fighters were dead by this point, but there was still an unbroken tradition of martial training. [22:25] I think Peter Jackson is trying to hint at a some cosmology with how the Elves glow. Here's an oversimplification: The universe was created by the supreme deity Eru Ilúvatar. Although the Ainur (roughly analogous to angels) were involved in the creation of the universe, everything they did was by Eru Ilúvatar's plan. When the Elves were "awakened", they were invited by the greatest of the Ainur to live with them in Valinor (roughly analogous to heaven). Some of the elves went, others did not. Those who did go were eventually called the "Eldar". By going to Valinor, they gained the "Light of the Eldar". This is a kind of grace that can be seen in the elves who traveled to Valinor. I think Peter Jackson was trying to show that the "Light of the Eldar" left an Elf when they died. You can also see something similar when Arwen decides to stay. However, it is unlikely Haldir (the elf who died) was actually an Eldar. He was probably a part of the Elves who did not travel to Valinor. Also, Arwen was half Elf, just like her father Elrond. Half Elves have the choice to travel to travel to Valinor or renounce their immortality and stay in Middle Earth. OK, gonna go on a tangent/rant here: One of the things that irritates a lot of fans of the books is that Arwen did not meet up with Aragorn & the Hobbits after Frodo was stabbed by the Nazgûl. Instead, it was Glorfindel. He was an Eldar and one of the mightiest Elves to have ever lived. Glorfindel slew a balrog and survived, unlike Gandalf who was actually a lesser Ainur (angel) who had been sent to Middle Earth in the the form of a man and with diminished powers. Glorfindel was also the one who fought (and chased away) the Nazgûl after he put Frodo on his horse and ordered the horse to take him to Rivendell. Glorfindel is mentioned in the film "The Martian" during the "Council of Elrond" scene. I understand the need to simplify things for the films, but it does create some confusion that you don't have in the books. 22:50 That "super secret hidden door" is called a "sally port". A "sally" is a military maneuver. Sneaking out a door/foxhole/etc. and attacking the enemy where they're not expecting it is called a "sally." 24:30 The Ents are "tree herders". Treebeard's call is similar to a sheep herder's bell; it's much quicker to ring a bell than to say "I need the sheep to go over there." I think another part of it is that the Ents seem to find speech so wonderful that they completely over do it. 30:22 The pipe weed was a nice touch (I'm pretty sure its in the books). Although Saruman sneered at Gandalf for smoking pipeweed, Saurman was smoking it himself. 31:00 I imagine the armor helped. Also, Aragorn was a skilled healer, and much of his knowledge was probably focused on combat wounds. 31:30 Tolkien pretended that he was translating tales about Middle Earth instead of writing them himself. In this framework, we only hear about those tales because they were written down in the "Red Book of Westmarch" (the red book that Bilbo passed to Frodo, and Frodo passed to Sam). 33:00 At this point, Aragorn is merely heir to the throne of Gondor. He hasn't been crowned yet. Also, I'm not sure if King Théoden even knew that Aragorn was the heir to Gondor. That knowledge had been kept VERY secret. If Sauron knew an heir of Isildur existed, he would do almost anything to track him down and kill him. I think the only thing more important to Sauron would be tracking down the One Ring.

Yep. While Rohan didn't have anything akin to a Standing Armies like Gondor does, each Holding had to maintain their own "active military" and the rest/most were levies. The Kingdom was in open war with Dunlendings. You are correct in that the sorry state of Rohirric armies are much to the design of Saruman/Wormtongue. Dunlending were agitated by Saruman to harass Western Rohan, that "guerilla war" had already cost much to the people of Rohan. Most of the lands on the both sides (especially to West) of Isen River were lost/too hostile to settle at this point. And like you said, the paranoia and bad counsel given by Grima had led to much of the loyal "Kings Men" to be either locked up or exiled. Some had safe havens in the Holdings but most had to resort becoming "warlords" and hope they were not slain by either marauding Dunlendings or Orcs OR the rohirrim forced to or being loyal by choice to Wormtongue and corrupted Theoden. Can't remember the numbers but in those couple of days before and during the Siege that Gandalf spent searching and rallying the scattered loyalist forces, he managed to gather actually sizeable force and even found a loyal army, led by Erkenbrand - commander of the Westfold.

(I’ll explain to you more about Elrond&Arwen & Aragorn by extension) therefore we must look at Elrond’s Twin Brother Elros, they both were half-elven brothers who can choose to be mortal or immortal because of their parents(Eärendil and Elwing) both half elven made a great sacrifice and went to Valinor to ask for help against Morgoth(who was making everything worse than a living hellscape for 100s of generations) which lead to the greatest events in the early first and second age. When you’re done the trilogy try doing reaction videos just like Moviejoob did now with the lore recently as well as OmarioRPG. I recommend videos by GirlNextGondor and The Red Book, and Tolkien Untangled and especially Men Of The West. Many other cool ones I’ll recommend in the comments section of those reaction videos you do from Tolkiens Legendarium lore videos. They are super engaging. You’ll be in love. ❤

Theoden isn't perfect king, but he's certainly not bad even if slightly proud from time to time. The problem with calling for help was that he was right that alliances with elves and dwarves were basically dead at that point (not to mention that they couldn't come in large numbers anyway, this isn't explored in the movies, but they had battles of their own to fight). As far as Gondor goes, if I understand it correctly, Rohan did call for help in previous battles, and Gondor didn't come (probably didn't have enough forces either, keep in mind that they have barely enough to keep Mordor at bay and reclaim some of their own lost territories like Osgiliath) so Theoden was like ''why call them, they're not gonna come anyway''. It's wrong approach, but you can see where those decisions came from.

One more thing about the ents and Tolkien - The connection between the Ents & Germanic&Irish folklore lies in their origins. J.R.R. Tolkien was a scholar of several languages & cultures+Folklore. He drew inspiration from various mythological & folkloric traditions to create the extension of our own world of Middle-earth which was not to be differentiated from our own world. It was to be a distant past of our own. Connecting many of our own worlds truest origins that all tie together. The Ent are believed to be the 'tree spirit,' which was a common theme in Germanic folklore. In many Germanic cultures, trees were believed to be inhabited by spirits or gods, were revered as sacred. The Ents, as tree-like beings, embody this idea of the spirit of the trees. Furthermore, the name 'Ent' itself comes from the Old English word 'ent,' which means 'giant.' This is likely a nod to the Germanic mythological figure of the Jötun, or giants, who were often associated with the forests and natural world. Overall, the Ents are a representation of Tolkien's fascination with Germanic + Druidic folklore + mythology, and serves as a tribute to the rich cultural heritage of these ancient traditions. Think of the ways of the Druid & Druidess, I know a few from long lineages and others that have been initiated. (The term initiation is different in this context. As many things in our lives are initiations and graduations. Rights of passage etc.) many in a sense become like trees and even become one with trees etc; many being medicine men/women, shamanic skills honed over years and years of study and experience, being Healers and councillors is the life of a shaman, to protect nature and to help others learn how to give back to nature too.

Here. Let me tell you about the ents - Treebeard(Fangorn) In the Silmarillion, at the end of the chapter "Of Aule and Yavanna", Manwë states, "But in the forests shall walk the Shepherds of the Trees." This is before the chapter, 'Of the Coming of the Elves'. So, since Treebeard is one of the first three, he is beyond cool. And he is around before the elves arrive in Valinor. However, do not be deceived! The elves taught the Ents speech, even though they were around before. It is often mistaken that ents are trees or were once trees, when they are in fact are a sort of 4th children of Îlluvatar (AllFather) a creation of the Vala named Yavannah Treebeard refers to the elves "started it, teaching the trees to talk" or some such thing. He also refers to the elves curing the ent's "dumbness". People assume the two events are one and the same, when they are not. Obviously, Tolkien meant to be vague and allow the reader to decide what they looked like and just how ent-like huorns could become and how tree-like ents could become. But it is clear they are in the long lists of animals alongside men and harts and bears, etc., not plants. Gandalf tells Thèoden that when he meets Treebeard he will be meeting the oldest thing that ever walked. Which is another indication that the ents were around, shepherding the trees, before the elves got to Middle-earth. Tolkien meant to be vague. After all, Celeborn and Galadriel hail Treebeard as "Eldest" when they meet him in LOTR. However, when Treebeard is reciting the poem of the different being, he calls the elves the "eldest of all". So who do we believe? Gandalf? Remember: Treebeard was in middle earth before even Galadriel entered there during the zenith years of Arda and of the elves and even the early mighty dawn of men when they came upon the scene. • Celeborn is said by his wife Galadriel to be the wisest of elves left in Middle-earth especially due to the fact he was a close kinsman family member of Elu Thingol Of Doriath (of which Elwë[Thingol] was Galadriel’s grandfathers closest friend and literal brother. The only. To there to stay in middle earth) Galadriel is certainly one of the oldest, she came over with the very first migration to middle earth, but Celeborn may not be as old as she is. People who go in for the rough drafts of Tolkien's creative process have noted that he first appears in the house of Thingol Graycloak long after the elves came to Middle-earth. But the ents were here when the elves arrived. The Elves are the eldest race of Elves, Men and Dwarves. The Hobbits were not included in the mythology and neither were the Ents. This does not necessarily mean the Ents are actually older than the Elves, just that they were here before the Elves got here. Fangorn is the oldest living being in the world; and is the personification of nature of the world. But the undying lands where the Elves originated were removed from the Circles of the World. However, the author does imply Fangorn is older than either Celeborn or Galadriel, because Gandalf claims he is the oldest living thing in Middle-earth and the two elves themselves address him as "Eldest". A couple other things to consider, from Hammond and Scull: in an unpublished draft letter of late 1968, now in a private collection, Tolkien wrote: 'Eldest was the courtesy title of Treebeard as the oldest surviving Ent. The Ents claimed to be the oldest ’speaking people’ after the Elves [illegible] until taught the art of speech by the Elves...They were therefore placed after the dwarves in the Old List...since Dwarves had the power of speech from their awaking’ “The Lord of the Rings, A Reader’s Companion” Hammond and Scull, page 382 Treebeard: Entry 464 The Ent And on page 499, while explaining Tolkien describing both Treebeard and Bombadil as ’eldest’, Hammond and Scull note: ’...it is worth repeating Christopher Tolkien’s comment that his father was given to ’rhetorical superlatives’, such as ’the oldest living thing’.

Elves, normally immortal, are shown having been killed in battle. What happens to them is complicated, like most things about Tolkien's lore. If I understand correctly, their spirits go to some sort of "Limbo," from which they might join the other elves in the "Undying Lands." Elrond will remain immortal regardless, but his daughter Arwen will die if she stays in Middle-Earth to be with Aragorn. A human father who shares his daughter's love with her man will still be able to visit her, but Elrond would live forever without ever seeing Arwen again. In the book, King Theoden has about 3000 men, not 300, for the battle at Helm's Deep. No elves come to help. Gandalf does arrive late with more men, as in the film. To increase the tension, I think the screenwriters made the battle seem more hopeless than it is portrayed in the book. (Full disclosure: I am reading the book for the first time in several years and haven't gotten to this point in the story.)

Indeed. One single, tho fancy, palisade wall would've had no chance against army of that size. Also: Entire city was build of wood and straw. If just the front row tossed torches/tar pots/whatever over the wall it'd been over.... Great Rohan BBQ of TA 3019! Hornburg/Helm's Deep was the local "Hill Fort" for the Central Rohan and main defence/fallback point to all of it. Although not featured in the film, the Fortress had system of caverns behind it called Glittering Caves that while not designed for it, could house majority of nearby civilian population for a good while - - IF - - the Fortress was properly supplied. It was not. Even a bit prolonged siege was going to be devastating at this point. The retreat to the Fortress was the only way they had even slightest chance of enduring the last stand of Rohan and assault of Saruman. * * * * * * * Went a bit overboard with this but anyway.. Sorry? While not much better in the books, there are pieces that all had to fall into proper places for all this to work out. Movie timeline is a bit skewed at this point - understandably as having too many climaxes break the flow of the story. Rough order of important stuff below. Before the Siege: Isengard army leaves to destroy Kingdom of Rohan, trusting they won't retreat East (desperate attempt that would just delay their defeat) and chooses to take fight in Helm's Deep. Theoden empties Edoras and makes for Helm's Deep as that is the only way they even have a chance. Riders are sent to rally/warn the Holdings. Gandalf leaves to rally remaining scattered and/or exiled loyal forces and levy soldiers/fighting people of Rohan from the nearby Holdings. Ents assault and sack Isengard that was left pretty much empty. Ents capture Saruman, now held "prisoner" in his tower. (Ents can't enter, Saruman won't come out.) Force of Huorns (tree-spirits awakened by Ents, "not-quite Ents", Ents grow too old/passive) head south to cut off the retreat of orc army heading to Isengard. Heroes arrive at Helms Deep, fortification works already underway. Some of the Loyal forces and first civilians have been busy. Gandalf finds an army led by Erkenbrand, both slowly make for Helm's Deep while continuously looking for more reinforcements. Heroes fortify Helms Deep fortifications further as best as they can. During the siege: No elves. Several layers of defences were overrrun with minimal casualties to defenders but causing significant losse sto the attackers as Sarumans' Army enroaches on the valley. Rohan and Isengard fight at Helms Deep. Wall is breached, defenders retreat to The Caves and Keep. The Caves hold (thanks to wounded Gimli and couple of the best Rohirric commanders). Morning comes. Keep about to fall, Theoden sallies out. Gimli and Defenders from Glittering Cave sally out. Isengard army is flanked by Rohirric reinforcements led by Gandalf and Erkenbrand. Siege breaks and rout begins. Dunlending humans surrender, are later given amnesty. A literal forest of Huorns block the retreat of routing forces, no routing force of evil escape the valley. After the siege: Heroes are united. Aftercare begins. A gigantic mound of rocks is discovered. As no orc corpses remain anywhere in the valley, only conclusion is that the Hourns have built this "Death Down" for all the retreating evil they struck down. Huorn forest seems to disappear as fast as it arrived. Tree-spirits have gone back to the Fangorn. Rohirric forces and heroes make way to Isengard; find Treebeard, The Ents and Merry/Pippin keeping guard at destroyed and flooded fortress.

I could literally have typed again and again, 'not in the book'. For one thing, Gondor is hundreds of miles from Helm's Deep and is busy fighting anyway. The Dwarves were under attack in the North, the Elves of Lothlorien were repelling attacks as well. There was no one who could send help and certainly no one close enough to arrive before or during the battle. They had no idea there would be a battle until it was almost on them.

Yes, the elves are literally immortal. They can only die by violence or giving up the will to live, and even then they are eventually reincarnated in a new body. They are not allowed to die, but are forever tied to the world. One of the themes that runs through all of Tolkien's work is human's envy of the immortality, and the evils that come about when they try to claim or gain it for themselves. On the other hand, the elves believe that men have the better end of the deal, because when Men die, their souls eventually pass beyond the Earth and go on to some other unknown but presumably better and more meaningful existence.

Helm's Deep is a military fortress, it was never intended to house civilians in the manner they had to, Rohan on the other hand is much better due to its open plains where you can spot threats from a far distance and you have room to expand and farm. The downside being that you are easily surrounded in Rohan whereas to attack Helm's Deep you can really only assault from the front.

It was etched out of the mountain similar to Minas Tirith. And both were originally elvish. Especially helms deep was related to the dwarvish history. Minas Tirith was Númenorean/Elvish. Carved out of the mountain like only they’d know how to do! And had a material about it that wasn’t damageable. The armies of dead orca kept piling up against the gate depicting the ancestors upon the giant door. ❤

The elves are immortal, yes. The way it goes is if they die on middle earth they’ll eventually reform in a place called Valinor. At one time they could readily go from earth to Valinor and back, used in some wars to keep throwing them back in. But eventually Valinor was removed from earth due to the betrayal of man so then it became one way (otherwise Gandalf easily could’ve just returned cause that’s where he ended up too). The difference between Gandalf and the elves is that Gandalf (and all the Ainur) are true immortal as in they always existed, they weren’t born they just were. Elves were born and while immortal they are tied to earth and if earth was destroyed they’d cease to exist while the Ainur would still exist even if the universe died they’d be alive in the void (thus why Sauron can’t actually be destroyed but weakened)

regarding the significance of Elrond having a hard time letting Arwen go: The elves age very slowly. Their lifespan is till the end of the physical world. However, their physical bodies can be broken and die, from battle wounds for example. But when they die in that way, they return home to Aman. They almost never lose an Elf permanently: Any elf whose body is physically broken almost always gets to return home, and often they get a new body over there. They have only so far lost two permanently (in the entirety of their race's history). Those who choose mortality (by bonding with the physical world, as in through consummation with a mortal, and they are exceptionally few) lose the "benefits" of an immortal elf. They do not ever get to return home to Aman where they may see their own family again, rather they die as humans do, where after death it is completely unknown what happens. They are literally lost forever. So Elrond's difficulty with Arwen and Aragorn hooking up isn't the usual kind of just a father letting go... but rather knowing that he will never EVER see his daughter again after she dies, which is rare and unusual for his kind --- their entire people/culture/race is just so used to the idea that they will see each other again in the "afterlife" which is just their homeland in Aman. To them, it us unnatural and almost unheard of to think that one could be lost forever, and that is the path that Arwen is heading in.

I’ll tell you about the Entwives now - I know there were several hints in the books that there may be Ents/Entwives in the Old forest; Sam's cousin said he saw what looked like an Elm tree walking, & a few characters mention the similarities between Fangorn & the Old Forest. The Old Forest seems to be comprised of Huorn type trees. Is there any references in Tolkien's other work that would refer to the Entwives being in the Old Forest? Its nice to be able to imagine that the Entwives live close to the Shire, but wasn't sure if there was proof.. ❤️❤️❤️❤️ Tolkien writes in two of his letters that he does not believe the Ent Wives survived a ‘scorched earth' policy in the war against Sauron that ended the Second Age. There is a conversation between Sam & Ted Sandyman in the Green Dragon Inn in Chapter 2 of FOTR that discusses sightings of moving trees in the northern part of the Shire. Some have concluded this means Tolkien intended for Ent Wives to survive & be in the Shire. But there's not enough evidence to draw any conclusion. The fact is this part of LOT was written when it was still meant to be a children's book, a sequal to The Hobbit. Tolkien had also written that part before he developed Ents. I suggest reading the entry in its entirety, it should cover everything pretty well. Sam's cousin said he saw what looked like an Elm tree walking This is the best evidence. And Fangorn (Treebeard) is super interested when Merry and Pippin describe The Shire. He asks them if they've seen Entwives there (saying that they would like such a country), and when they depart he begs them to send news should they see any. In a nutshell, it seems likely that there may be Entwives in the forests of The Shire. I certainly like to think so, though there's no further mention of them According to Sam, Hal saw a "Tree-man" "bigger than a tree"; he also says that he was "as big as an elm tree, and walking - walking seven yards to a stride, if it was an inch." An adult elm tree can grow well beyond 100 feet in size. For comparison, Treebeard is describes as being "at least fourteen foot high". The length of his stride isn't given, but l've seen speculations between four and eight feet. Granted, other Ents could be bigger than him, and we don't know whether the Ent-wives were bigger than the male Ents; but unless they were almost ten times as big as their male counterparts, I don't think what Hal saw is likely to have been an Ent. To an uneducated, working class hobbit who is probably likely to exaggerate in pub story time, its possible that may have taken an Ent for a huge tree. much more possible than believing he lied, especially considering the hobbit didn't even know any such creature as a walking tree existed. Sure, but if we concede that the details are unreliable, then all we're left with is the second-hand, probably exaggerated story of a hobbit known for "always saying he's seen things". And if Hal's fantasy was lively enough to turn a Treebeard-sized Ent into a towering, 100-foot giant, it might as well have turned a tree and some shifting shadows into one. I'm not saying it's impossible, don't get me wrong. just think that the source of the rumor, combined with the fact that the details don't even fit very well, makes it rather unlikely to me. The evidence is sparse at best. 1 guess I just have irrational hope that the Entwives exist somewhere & in canon, that's the only likely place. Also, and this is super oblique... Samwise carries Galadriel's box of seeds back to The Shire. Remember, she read many hearts, and who knows what seeds and nuts may have been in that box. I’m by far not the only one who hopes beyond hope that the Entwives may still live somewhere. The Ents' story is quite a sad one if they don't. I personally take heart in Treebeard's words, and the Elvish song he recites. He says: We believe that we may meet again in a time to come, and perhaps we shall find somewhere a land where we can live together and both be content. But it is foreboded that that will only be when we have both lost all that we now have. And the Elves made a song of it that ends with the lines: Together we will take the road that leads into the West, And far away will find a land where both our hearts may rest. Maybe, just maybe, by whatever "road beneath the bitter rain" some Ents and Entwives found their way into the West. just don't think it very likely that Hal saw one in the North Moors. Also, and I hope you don't mind me mentioning it, but there was only one seed (& some earth) in Sam's box suddenly became the salt box in the movie) & that grew into a Mallorn tree. It replaced the party tree I believe. The Ents also are not trees, and I doubt they would have grown from seeds. Old Man Willow I think was a hourn, a really old tree that grows "entish" with age. The ents used to herd the horns like livestock, but without an ent to care for it in the old forest, It became violent and restless. (That last bit about the reason for its violence is a bit of my own head canon) ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ There's always the fun thought that Yavanna called them to Valinor to avoid their imminent fates when men/sauron took over, and the males were left behind to fight. I mean, Thave O evidence, but as far as head canon goes it makes me feel better than "they all died" I would like to think the Entwives survived but I believe they went to what in the third age was called the brown lands and built their gardens there. I think that the Hurons in The Old Forest (very close to the shire) somehow survived from the first age when the whole of eastern middle watch was covered in forests and as man settled and cut them down and Beleriand sunk they got separate and somehow survived. As long as there's no proof of them being extinct, I like to think they did :) A lot of things were meant for us to do our own work and be scholars just like him. Certain things were left open ended but in his very clever way. Also don’t forget the oath she swore to help Fangorn find Fimbrethil when Beleriand arises from the sea once more. She’d return and help him find her. And she meant it. And she had the largest and clearest foresight out of all the elves. ❤️

0:28 "You should have stayed fortified." This is one of the changes made from the book to the movie that made NO sense at all. When Theoden suggests they take refuge in Helm's Deep, Gandalf, Aragorn, et all nodded and basically said "yeah, sensible plan." Because it was a sensible plan. I mean, the establishing shorts of Edoras showed that place is NOT withstanding much of any sort of siege. It's a home. It's like comparing your house to a military bunker -- one of them is definitely more defensive. Helm's Deep was basically made to allow a smaller force to hold out against attackers. But they needed this to somehow be... "controversial?" Increase anxiety in the audience? Throw Theoden even more under the bus? So they gave Gandalf some real nonsense to say there. Absolutely unnecessary, just as the Ents initially refusing to attack Orthanc was unnecessary and illogical.

@@similarrose5811 Even Aragorn immediately countered Gandalf's objection by saying that Helm's Deep had saved the people of Rohan before. And it had, it was the only fortifiable area, the only place capable of withstanding a siege. There was no where else to go that wouldn't have resulted in an all-out assault and massacre by a far superior force. Without Eomer's reinforcements, it would probably have been a complete loss on the part of the Rohirrim, true, but they chose a slim hope over no hope at all. Gandalf may have saved the day by guiding Eomer's forces to Helm's Deep, but every other option would have resulted in annihilation, a good day or more earlier. Only holing up in a defensive area and inflicting many casualties for every man you lose, that was the only way to hold out until then.

The ends decide to go to war rather quickly, and don't need to be tricked into. Also, faramir (boromirs brother) never wants to take the ring. From the moment he knows Frodo has it, he wants to help him. These add a bit of drama which are important for a movie, that aren't necessary for the experience of reading a book, where you get much more time to develop the characters. Unfortunately it changes the really solid motives of those two. Also, you should do voice overs. Seriously. You have a great voice that could do adverts really well if you don't already.

He’s around 6780 years old. Arwen is 3777. The current ages of the characters: Frodo Baggins is 53. Samwise Gamgee is 38. Meriadoc Brandybuck (Merry) is 36. Peregrin Took (Pippin) is 28. Gandalf (Olòrin) - is 15,000 (in his current form. Aragorn is 87. Legolas is 2,931. Gimli is 139. Boromir son of Denethor II is 41! Elves aged differently than men and dwarves. They did not suffer from old age or disease, and their lives were not limited by a fixed number of years. Instead, they aged very slowly, remaining youthful and vigorous for much longer than mortals. Though they could voluntarily leave their bodies and the ultimate thing that can kill them is grief or Sorrow that’s palpable enough for them to just not wish to live anymore. Here are the ages of some of the main Elves of the Third Age, as of the War of the Ring: 1. Elrond Half-elven - over 8,586 while his daughter is 3,777 old! 2. Galadriel - around 20,000 3. Celeborn - 20,000; (he may have been alive before her birth or around the same time as his lineage that he lived amongst his forefathers and kin might suggest he is older but they are both very ancient.) 4. Glorfindel (replaced scenes with Arwen in the movies but it helped prop up Aragorn’s Film character progression. I still think they could have incorporated them both in the scenes somehow and included the other important stuff that went on in that forest meeting Glorfindel and his company of elves)- he’s over 2,000 (although he had been re-embodied after dying in the First Age which means his Fëa {spirit} is far older than 2000.) 5. Thranduil - over 8000, (as he was born in the First Age and lived in Doriath with his father Oropher; Thranduil is also the father of Legolas. (As Haldir mentioned him when speaking to Legolas in Lothlòrien during the first movie’s extended scene. He shares the same kindred elven clan as to Celeborn(Galadriel’s husband). It's worth noting that Elves could choose to die voluntarily, usually when they grew weary of life or when they had fulfilled their purpose in the world. However, their spirits would then depart to the Halls of Mandos and could eventually be re-embodied in a new body I meant to add that Frodo was 51 when he left due to the whole Gandalf coming back to the shire after many years. that explains why his youthful appearance didn’t change much throughout the entire film!

More about the ents - The connection between the Ents & Germanic&Irish folklore lies in their origins.

I’ll tell you about the Entwives next - I know there were several hints in the books that there may be Ents/Entwives in the Old forest; Sam's cousin said he saw what looked like an Elm tree walking, & a few characters mention the similarities between Fangorn & the Old Forest. ❤️

Theoden did the best he could. Many died. If he hadn't did what he did then all would have died. As far as help from Gondor, when hours matter help is just days away. Gollum is a pitiful character. Sméagol was a good but weak person who was corrupted by the ring until almost no good was left. He deserves a chance at redemption, but at the end of the day some are just too far gone and are irredeemable.

This dude is slow on making inferences. The glow was because Frodo could see in the spirit realm with the One Ring. Of course Elves are immortal. For Elrond to help man he'd have to sacrifice all his people. There aren't many elves in his realm of Rivendell. Dude removed the Ride of the Rohirrim. Dude chooses death. jk lol.

Technically we had two Kings of Men talking in this movie. Denethor, Boromir & Faramir's father, is NOT the king of Gondor, only its Steward. Aragorn is the legitimate heir to the Throne of Gondor. While the movie does a lousy job of conveying this, even if Theoden had sent word to Gondor for aid, they would not have arrived before the battle of Helm's Deep was concluded.
