I think everyone cheered for the troll. The troll is clearly "nature" itself, as you say, we destroy everything that's nice.

The end of the film is what we call "typically Norwegian". Americans have happy endings but we have heartbreaking endings. All our folktales have trolls dying. The reason they have to die is that they eat Christians and can smell them from a long distance. The mistake the soldier made was that he began to pray. The music for the film is Edward Grig, Dovregubbens hall/ In the Hall of the Mountain King.

There is also a Norwegian movie called "Troll hunter" from some years back. Slightly different vibe, still worth a watch.

There’s a few of similar ish movies from Norway like The wave( my fave out of them), The Quake and the Tunnel and one that a little different but so good and based on a real tragedy in Norway is 22 July

I watched Troll Hunter back when it came out, and honestly this felt like a spiritual successor. An awesome movie, it was way better than it had any right to be.

Watch Troll Hunter. It's the same kind of Norwegian troll lore, but less "serious". Troll Hunter is better, but a different type of movie.

Norwegian lore tips: Ivo caprinno's stuff from the 60's. "Gutten som kappåt med trollet/The lad that had a eating contest with the troll" for one of the troll parts. Or the more updated realtime movies Askeladden and Askeladden 2 wich has a touch of most of the good old stuff. Great movies, I think you can rent them on here if you can't find them anywhere else. Great review! 😃
