Fun fact: In the comics, Jason did lose pretty badly to Nightwing during the Battle for the Cowl. It was mainly spurred on by Jason, making Dick think he had killed Tim and Dick getting angry enough to use killing moves. Pre-New52 Nightwing was so overprotective of Tim and Damian that he was known to lose control and toe the "no killing" line.

For the little story...DC run a poll in 1988 with the fan to decide if Jason Todd would be killed or saved...The fans voted to killed him and only 72 votes made the difference, which lead to a Death in the Family story. Jason Todd was very divisive in the fandom, being from different background and being less emphatic than Dick Grayson. Some says, if they did the poll again, he would have survive today, in 1988 the DC phone line was filled with angry fan of the decision...Do you think they did right ?

Comics can be so static, I think anything to shake them up can be a good thing, even if it risks alienating old fans. I remember when they first moved Tony Stark's Iron Man origin from Vietnam to Desert storm and it infuriated me. Why get rid of your own established history? Why not come up with something new? It's like how a lot of people were super angry when Optimus Prime died in the 86 Transformers movie, but even as a kid I appreciated how high that made the stakes.

Superman vs The Elite is another really good animated film that tackles the same idea about heroes not killing but with Superman. That's worthy of a reaction as well as other dc animated films. I know people are going to recommend Flashpoint Pardox and everything that comes after that because they all share a continuity. However, people tend to overlook and not react to the stuff that comes before flashpoint other than this film because it's so popular. So here are my recommendations: Wonder Women 2009 Superman vs The Elite The Dark Knight Returns part 1 and 2 Green Lantern First Flight Batman vs Ninja Turtles Justice League Doom Justice League crisis on two earths Batman Assault on Arkham Batman Superman public enemies Batman Superman apocalypse

Don’t forget Batman Year One which is part of the same timeline as TDKR I and II. Along with the Catwoman short. But I highly agree. Especially on watching Superman vs The Elite. So few reactors have watched it, and it’s arguably Superman’s best animated film. All Star has some great scenes, but it struggles as a complete narrative having cut a lot of some of the best stuff from the comic, so that it pales in comparison to the comic, whereas The Elite expands and improves on most of its comic counterpart. Shoot, I’d even add Green Lantern Emerald Knights. I know it’s in a different universe as First Flight, despite using the same animation to save money. But it has some of the best GL stories.

I am not a lawyer. What I'm about to say may be wrong. Confer with an American criminal lawyer. To my knowledge, the American legal system cannot kill someone who is declared legally insane. They can put Joker on death row. They can't execute him until he is declared legally sane. The American legal system is perfectly designed to leave Joker alive. Every time a criminal is arrested, by law, they must have their day in court. Even if it's obvious that they're guilty, they will have a trial of some kind. A lawyer will be provided to them if they don't already have one. The lawyer, by law, must provide the best legal defense possible. The only legal defense the Joker can claim is insanity. Can you honestly claim that the Joker is NOT insane? That he is without question of sound mind? This is why he ends up in Arkham.

“How many years has Batman been doing this?” A long time. He adopted Dick a little while after his family was murdered and trained him to be Robin after he kept sneaking out trying to find his family’s killer. After Dick grew up and eventually left Gotham Batman came across Jason in a bad part of the city after he had stripped the tires off the Batmobile in the short time Batman was gone and took him a bit later. Tim figured out Batman and Nightwing’s identities on his own and was convinced Batman needed a Robin at his side (he did) and was basically given the role by Dick and Alfred. Ra’s typically knows Batman is Bruce. Unclear if the YJ version does, I think. Also the use of the Lazarus Pit. It hasn’t appeared on screen in YJ but it was implied. He got impaled in S2 then came back just fine. And it did appear in the comics bridging the first two seasons Using the Lazarus Pit for resurrection is not recommended. Something something unnatural, something something can’t bring back someone 100% so madness replaces what’s missing. Black Mask’s face situation varies across iterations. Regular mask, mechanical mask, mask got melted onto his face or something similar leaving him looking like that permanently. Resurrected Jason was all but explicitly confirmed in YJ S3. A league ninja recognizes the name Grayson, Ra’s says he’s getting his memories back, and he’s credit as Red Hooded Ninja Jason was _not_ liked when he was Robin. That’s why he was voted to be killed off.

I have few complaints about this movie, but one definite one is how they toned down what made Bruce upset at Jason. He didn't break some guy's collarbone - in the comic Jason as Robin is implied to have shoved a serial rapist off a building to his death because he had attacked a girl Jason knew, and that girl ended herself over it. Jason says the guy saw him and slipped in a panic, but Bruce isn't sure he believes him, but isn't sure he wants to know the truth either.

Firstly, the Joker continuously escaping is not Batman's fault, it's the fault of Gotham's penitentiary system not being competent enough to secure their inmates. Secondly, a lot of times, the villains escape due to the flat out corruption of the system itself (as shown in this movie where corrupt prison guards enabled the Joker to escape). If Gotham's Justice system itself can't honor their own rules (as shown with their corruption), Batman breaking his rule would effectively make Gotham lawless and completely corrupt, as no agent of Justice in the town (vigilante or otherwise) would be following any rules or higher law. Without a higher law, fighting the villains (who break the law) would become hypocritical.

This means nothing because in the past 6 years in DC comics, Jason has beaten Nightwing a few times. Sometime around the Cheer line storyline he beats him and Tim. “Canonically” means absolutely nothing because it’s constantly changing. Black Mask’s mask depends on the writer. Some stories have it as a mask while others have it permanently stuck to his face. The Ewan McGregor version is one where he just had a mask. Naturally, they wanted to have Ewan McGregor to show his face as much as possible as Hollywood loves to do. This version of Black Mask is like if Sonny Corleone became the Godfather or if Trevor from GTA V became a mob boss. He’s so hot-headed and it leads to some hilarious moments 😂

Jason Todd was the regular Robin twice before being killed. Originally he was a carbon copy of Dick, right down to being an acrobat, but then Crisis on Infinite Earths happened, which was a line wide reboot of the DC Universe. The plan was to update/refresh/streamline the comic line and make it easier to jump into, but Batman was doing just fine before the reboot, so there wasn't much of a need for a major shake up. Rather than keeping him as a copy of Dick, they went the opposite way and he was the son of a criminal killed by Two-Face left fending for himself (which is why he was needing to steal tires to get by). One of his best stories is trying to save a woman from an abuser who has diplomatic immunity (they loved that in the 80s), after catching him red handed and arrested, the abuser is freed and makes a call to the victim, by the time they get to her, she has already killed herself. This is where the seeds of the Red Hood is planted, we see Robin surprising the abuser on his balcony, then we see the guy falling to his death. Gordon says something like that Robin said "he was surprised and fell, I don't know if I believe him". I vote for that he chucked him off the building, but within the issue it is not certain. Death in the Family is the story with the call in gimmick, they had two endings worked out, one where Batman is exclaiming that lives and the one that one the poll which is very close to what is shown here. The biggest change is that Jason had gone to find his previously unknown biological mother, and she sold him out to the Joker. After the beating, and being unable to disarm the bomb, he used his body to shield his "mother". Controversially the poll was likely rigged by a fan who used an autodialer to vote every few minutes (the editor says there isn't proof, but that he heard that it happened), the vote was 5,343 votes for Jason's death over 5,271 for his survival-a margin of just 72 votes. As a fan at the time it was a great story, and terrible aftermath, and it was years of angry sad Batman stories, basically until a very young Tim Drake showed up having figured out Batman's secret identity and became the the Robin.

Ok when it comes to killing Joker I always say people need to think who/what gives Batman the authority to murder someone else? If he killed Joker he’d be a murder, you could argue he did it as a form of self defence but it would make him in the strictest sense a killer putting him at the same level as the man who killed his parents. If Batman killed him should he not be judged for it? Batman is already a vigilante breaking multiple laws in order to do what he does which people already choose to overlook (if I broke into your office, looked through your things and took work product because I think your company is breaking the law then beat you into a body cast as I leave you’d call the police and have me arrested) if he killed someone rightly or wrongly you’d have no choice but to call him a criminal and given his skills and talents he’d be the kind of criminal another vigilante or hero would have to stop be the one to stop him. Batman is not the issue in Gotham it’s Gothams laws and judicial practices as they keep putting Joker in a clearly poorly run and maintained asylum rather than giving him the death penalty or finding other more permanent solutions to punish him for his crimes

Like he said in the movie, it would be too easy to end his life, and after taking just one, it would become easier to start killing the others. Batman would eventually rationalize it, and he will become the thing he hates. Batman killing the joker means at joker wind in the end.

the thing is, that Jason doesn't know, is that, in the comics, Bruce did go after the Joker after Jason's death. Two things stopped him from killing the clown. One was the fact that the Joker had somehow managed to become the Iranian ambassador to the UN, thus granting him diplomatic immunity. Bruce, however, doesn't care about starting an international incident, so he goes after the Joker anyway. Superman has to step in and tell Bruce that if he starts an international incident, the UN is gonna order him after Bruce. Bruce backs off, but warns Clark that WHEN the Joker steps out of line, he'll come for him. Joker, of course, steps out of line, Bruce comes after him, and comes very close to beating him to death, but Clark stops him, because he knows that Bruce would never forgive himself if he killed.

Everyone seems to have this conversation about the no kill rule and they always come to same conclusion based on their lack of experience. Once you do something you are vehemently against, the next time becomes that much easier to justify. Bruce knows himself enough to know, if he were to give into that, there would be probably no stopping, he would be able to justify merc'ing everyone, every villain, every obstacle. He has that much pent up rage, sadness and aggression, he doesnt know if once thats released if he could ever just stop. At the end of the day, he is still that sad little boy who lost his parents to violence, and he cares too much about people that he will even save villains that dont deserve it. We have seen an unhinged Batman several times, one of which was his father in flashpoint, actively just throwing people off of rooftops once they are not longer useful for information.

YESYESYES Funfact, not fun: Jason's mom sold Jason to Joker so the comic/canon story is wayyyyy worse. This movie works better for its adaptation of the Under the Red Hood comic book cuz Batman doesn't try to murdar Jay by throwing a batarang to his neck but it does skip a few things, for simplicity and time sake, from the iconic Death in the Family comicbook (although, thank god there is no UN Joker here). Jensen Ackles did cosplay Red Hood I'm going to keep adding info cuz this is one of my favorite movies and Red Hood is my fav character in DC. - Robin died thru a phone vote. This thing has been agreed to be incredibly fucking up that the writers even thought to do this and even carried it out. - The original story keeps going with Batman tracking Joker with the 100% intention to end him. Like Batman was going to kill him. Superman stops him, becuase poilitics and racism from writers. It gave us the line "He was the best of us" refering to Jason. - Jason was the happy Robin. Despite being from the streets and having a pretty effed childhood, kiddo loved school and literature. The trauma did caught up to him as he got older. - He beginnings as robin are weird... since DC wanted Nightwing but... Batman needs a robin. So Jason was a copy of Dick. Barely any differences. With time they came but slowly and they get twisted later on. - As to convince ppl Jason was violent and annoying, Death in the family has a benched Robin because in a previous story Batman and Jason work on a domestic violence case. The victim takes her life and they can't do much abt the perpetrator cuz politcs. Jason pays him a visit... The subject dies. Jason says he fell. It is heavily implied Jason didn't try too hard to save him from the fall. --- Batman believes Jason didn't push him but still benches Jason because he is starting to a see that the job and his past is catching up to him. - Jason was the first one to be an official son to Bruce Wayne. - Jason did manage to steal a few of the bat-mobiles' wheels. - As I said before, Jason was betrayed by his mom, who watched him get beat up while smoking a cigarette. - Winter Soldier and Red Hood made their debuts close too each other. Now this usually means Marvel or DC copied each other (bring back the dead sidekick from years ago) but the debut dates are so closed to each other that it is 99% originals ideas for both companies. - Jason's death was important in comics since he did stay dead. He was incredibly relevant to Batman's character moving forward. - Batman became incredibly violent after Jason's dead. And reckless. - Ra respects Bruce so much. He wants him as his replacement. - Ra is very regal and all that like on here and YJ but repeated exposure to the pit did start to warp his mind so... Villain. - The Lazarus pit cannot revive ppl. - Jason's revival was a result of a comic crisis story that altered reality. (edit: you guys read it so yeah... SB prime, who is basically a comic book fan depiction who threw a tantrum and punched reality which made a Jason that did survive the bomb switch with the one on the main universe who didn't) - Jason came back to live a few months after death. He broke out of his grave on a body broken and blown up. - A very alive but catatonic Jason was dunked on the green goo pit. - The Lazarus pit doesn't has lasting effects on the mind. - Jason had a plan to kill Batman that involved inching closer to the batmobile for hours to plant a bomb. He panicked and didn't follow thru. - Jason trained around the world to have his revenge. - This movie takes place along weeks, possibly a few months were the Red Hood basically became the new main crime boss successfully. - Jason tried to kill Tim Drake, the 3rd Robin. Well not tried... he could have but simply left a messege... with his blood. - This was his triumphant return to comics and he successfully challenged Batman philosophy. - After this... It is kinda hard to find good story with him. Continuities get mixed, his character and motivation do too. His past gets getting rewritten to make him the violent Robin. Other batfam continuity bs. They either make him a complete murderer or... His popularity made him more... gentle. Since he is villain, they can't write villains for some reason and now he is a antihero. - Jason is a magic user. He posses the All Blades. Mystical swords he can summon in front of pure evil. Pretty neat... None uses the all blades on his stories. - Lazarus Jason posses almost the same build as Bruce. He is a fucking beast. - Some depictions give him a white tuff on hair some don't. and that's all i got rn. feel free to add on or correct me.

Bruce understands just how much of a "slippery slope" it would be to bring himself to the point where he could justify murdering someone; and knows if he were to cross that line it would make it that much easier in the future to rationalize killing others and in effect acting like the judges from Judge Dredd pretty much. Batman would potentially become one of the world's most dangerous assassins if he were willing to cross that moral line, especially given the resources available to him along with his training and amazing strategic capabilities. Bruce could pretty much kill a great deal of metahumans if you were to remove his inhibitions towards the idea of committing murder.

Capital Punishment exists... But as a tool of the State. Batman as a private citizen, even a vigilante, if he kills, then he's just a murderer even with a cause. And he KNOWS he's on a razors edge and it SCARES him. Fear of himself is one thing that keeps him from turning into say... Frank Castle. And there's also the OTHER battle between Batman and Joker: Joker's whole philosophy is that everyone is one crappy day from being a monster. It justifies his existence. If Joker can do enough to push Batman to kill him, Joker wins. Everything Batman believes in is rubbish.

The thing to remember here, Batman is mentally unstable. He knows this better than anyone. He admits he thinks of killing Joker every time they fight. So this gives you a window into where he is mentally, which is always on the edge of an abyss. The final speech where he says "I'll never come back," he's admitting that the will be the straw that breaks the camels back. The moment he finally kills, is the moment he loses himself completely, and vould arguably become a bigger threat than the joker ever could. Secondly, the whole point of gotham is to have an absolute corrupt mess of a city trying to be better than all of its crime. Because of this, too many people, namely cops, get on high horses and do everything by the book. Instead of just taking an L and taking joker out. The people of gotham are just as much to blame for joker still being alive as well.
