Hey Steven, Im finally considering foiling. My Nexus 11m and 8m are ready. What do you recommend, buy a freeride foil and start learning myself, or take a lesson for the basics? I already wingfoiled, and this went surprisingly well. Keep up the nice video's what gives people the mood for more progression 🤙
@stevenakkersdijk
@stevenakkersdijk 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Nils, good choice! If you've been wingfoiling you'll be completely fine. Just get yourself a foil with a front wing size of ±1200cm and ±80cm mast. From there you can just start trying. Make sure to watch some tutorials on the start etc.

Hi again Steven, new summer season = back on the foil. You mention initiating the gybes from a cross or upwind course,vwhich is fine in some cases, but what if you are actually trying to cruise downwind? Do you really have to change course upwind , gybe, then bear downwind again or is there a way to gybe directly from, say, a 45deg port downwind course to a 45 deg starboard course, as you would on a sailboat or even TT?
@stevenakkersdijk
@stevenakkersdijk 2 жыл бұрын
Hey David It's for sure possible to gybe from 45 to 45 when you've already been riding on a downwind course. The important part is that you found a stable kite position on that downwind course (where it sits deeper in the wind window). From there you can initiate the gybe with the board and steer the kite in a downloop 1-2 seconds later. It will be important to do the downloop gybe as a normal gybe won't be easy.

Hey Steven, very nice video, again! They are just getting better and better :) where did you take this videos, the spot looks awesome! one more question, what would you recommend on a core SLC foil size (1000 ord 1250) if i already know how to go left and right easily and now a i want to practice gybes and tacks, etc.? cheers, domi
@stevenakkersdijk
@stevenakkersdijk Жыл бұрын
Hey Dominic, happy you like the video! It's filmed in Squamish, British columbia, Canada. The spot is mind blowing when you ride there. Personally I always ride the 1000cm, it's a bit faster and more reactive. I would make the choice depend on your weight and progression curve. < 75kg = 1000cm < 90kg and a good feel for sports = 1000cm >75 and slow learning in sports = 1250cm Hope this helps!

Well made and useful as usual. I managed the gybes and downloop gybes on my Double agent foil with a low aspect wing but not on my new foil with a high aspect wing. Could you cover the differences in technique with HA wings? Also I'd love a tutorial on optimizing downwind course and speed, I can go downwind roughly at the same angle as upwind (45 degrees or so) but am limited by loss of line tension and increasingly precarious balance as the kite is just drifting. Is it better to keep the kite high, low, to move it, to loop it? Etc...
@stevenakkersdijk
@stevenakkersdijk 2 жыл бұрын
Hey David. Thanks for your comment. I'm happy that you're managing to do the gybe on the low aspect wing. In general the low aspect wings are a bit slower / have more drag than the high aspect wings which makes the timing a bit less important. The downloop gybe should work better on the high aspect wings. I would love to cover all the technical parts on HA vs LA and how to optimize the downwind tack. But its low in my list on videos to make in the near future, there just isn't enough request for it atm. But ill see how these foil videos perform and I'll probably cover it somewhere next year. Going downwind is hard on the foil. And unless you create enough apparent wind like the racers you'll be stuck to riding downwind with a course similar to the upwind, or worse. I can't recommend looping, drift is probably your best bet

@movieman12341 2 жыл бұрын
Get a foil kite like Sonic 3. If you sheet the bar in almost all the way it backstalls the kite allowing WAY more drift than any inflatable will allow. You can go pretty much go straight downwind with line tension.
@movieman12341
@movieman12341 2 жыл бұрын
Also keep the kite low while going downwind. It will almost be touching the water.

About surf board: i do both variants of tack and jibes, foot switch. But this really didn't help me with any of mentioned maneuvers on foil, it just works really different.
@stevenakkersdijk
@stevenakkersdijk 11 ай бұрын
It does work very different indeed. But I do think it makes it slightly easier as you already understand the movement. (vs a twintip rider who has never done a tack like that)

dont turn / loop your Kite below 11 or 1 am. your lines will slack, it dosent matter how windy it is. My keylearing after one kite season alone on a lake
@stevenakkersdijk
@stevenakkersdijk 2 жыл бұрын
Mainly depends on your timing of the loop vs when you steer the board downwind. If you go downwind early enough you could loop ot from 45 degrees down no problem.
