I remember my first trail half marathon (after already completing a full road marathon). I thought I was going to smash it out at my normal road pace. I was so wrong. It has been my only race where I thought I might quit after 16 km. But I got to the end and loved it. Been running trail ultras ever since.

@@ultraboy99x compared with Sage not much, but I was training for a marathon. I ended up with a chondral defect which is a small hole on the cartledge surrounding the knee cap caused by bad form and not enough engagement in the quads. I've had physio for the last six months which has taught me good core engagement and I'm running a few kms at a time again!

Hi Sage, I’ve been doing a 30k long run once a week for over a year now in my training, this week I felt really good at 30k so I thought I’ll give my first 50k distance ago, I took half banana, hand fill of dates nuts & raisins, one gel, & just held a bottle of water in each hand, got to 43k & my Garmin watch started going flat, felt really good but, got put off when battery went flat, so I did 44k over 800m elevation, I was waiting for my legs to tier out but felt good all the way, it’s amazing how over time doing a regular 30k easy pace run, all of a sudden feels like my legs can handle a 50k distance, cool feeling, thanks Sage 😀👍🍀🌳🌲🏃🏼‍♂️✌️

Hey Coach, great vid's you have here, a real treasure trove on tips and advice! Many thanks for the help! I have a question, my trail shoe for the past couple of years has been the speed goat, but I'm finding that for me. the toe box is just not wide enough. My Road shoe, Bondi6, works very well for me, so My question is, which trail shoe has the same grip as at the speed goat will give me the same room as the Bondi6? Thanks Coach!

so its starting to turn into summer which means its really hot, and these past couple days i was running and my body just wants to shut down because im constantly getting beat down by the heat and the sun, so i was just wondering if theres any way to fix that because it is definitely demotivating me to run and i want to have fun so i can do great for cross country.

How do you calculate your pace? I have experience running road marathons and have a good idea of what is a sustainable pace for that distance but have never gone further than 30 miles in training. I want to run my first 100km race next summer. Can I just add a couple of minutes/mile to my marathon pace? Also, how far should my longest training run be leading up to the 100km race?

Hi Sage...thanks for a great video full of excellent advice. Please allow me to return the favor...have a look into your audio recording setup. Audio is very washed out with a lot of room reflections in the mid/high frequency ranges...not a big deal but a little attention to your audio will go a long way in improving the overall quality of your videos!
@Vo2maxProductions
@Vo2maxProductions 4 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks, really appreciate the tips! I will admit the audio was especially bad on this video because I had to use my old camera without a mic at all! (Sandi was out with the Rode external....which I usually just plug into my Canon Rebel T5 main camera). Noted on the room reflections. Thank you!

@@Vo2maxProductions No problem! Usually your audio is pretty good...I just felt like giving something back after all the good advice I've taken away from your channel and seeing as I can't give you any advice on running (I'm a novice ultra runner coming off of road marathons, doing my 1st mountain 50k in Oct if the virus permits) but audio design, editing and post-production is what I do for a living so at least I can give something there...hope you guys are staying safe & healthy! Cheers...

Perfect timing on the video, Sage! I'm currently training for a Bday Miles adventure trail run of (gulp) 33 miles, which will be my first ultra-distance run. I have just under 2 months left, and I felt great on my long run of 14.6 miles last Saturday. What do you think would be a reasonable peak long run distance before the actual 33 miler? The training plan I'm loosely following (from Trail Runner Mag) has me working up to 25 miles, but I wonder if that's a little short? Interested in your thoughts, maybe this isn't the most important element of training to consider and, for example, consistency is key here...

Around what age do most people start moving to ultras from the marathon
@Vo2maxProductions
@Vo2maxProductions 4 жыл бұрын
I'd recommend most teenagers wait until they are done growing a lot....so over 18 for both the marathoning ultras. I'd imagine a lot of kids 16 and under even, could do an ultra, but back at that age I was mainly running cross country and track up to 5km in distance races. I guess I did do a half marathon at age 16, but generally it is better to be patient at bit in "moving up in distance". Also it helps to have more "life time mileage " and consistent running mileage under your belt before you do a marathon or ultra.
