Hi Melissa, I have a Sheltie more reactive like Dakota your horse...I spoke with the vet and have him on Niacinamide (B3) based on weight dose in AM. It has taken the edge off his reacting..as I continue to train daily. Over the last couple years with supplement, CONSISTANCY with training and maturing...I am pleased with his progress. Please don't think I think the task is easy...I don't. In the midst had a year set back during covid when I was in NY for 3 leg surgeries. Many times I felt there was little progress and seemingly setbacks....today he is doing wonderfully! I was concerned someone else would not be as diligent with him ... I am so pleased I hung in there with consistent training...(watched a lot of videos!) He is quirky and I adore him....he is still on B3 same dose though he has grown. Kenji is so faithful! Enjoy all your animals!

For Koda, make him move his feet. His reward is when he gets to rest (which, lets be honest, is a horses sole goal in life to rest and eat, lol). So before the farrier comes, do work with him in the round pen making him move. Then let him rest and have him pick up a foot. If he moves or tries to run, make him move again (lunging left and right at a walk, trot and canter). He should pick up very soon that if he remains in one place, he is rewarded by not having to work. For a better explanation you can look up the Clinton Anderson natural horsemanship training method. You can do it. I trained my skittish horse this way and she ended up being a dream of a horse and a barn favorite. It sounds like he has just gotten rusty on his manners and he’s taking advantage of you. Love your family and love your videos. I should also add I have no background in wild mustang tendencies so maybe you’ve already tried these things and it’s not working for him.

It's been 40 years since I worked with horses, but your suggestion is what I was taught. Work the horse in the ring, then handle the feet. It's really about getting them used to their feet being handled.

i absolutely love it ! there could be a 5 hour panning video from left to right of those ranges- i would be glued watching the birds listening to all the noises and watching the clouds forming, going up and over and/or disappearing at the ridges- Love It ! :) ( and the family makes it all the easier too ! )

@@MM-tw6cm Yessss! Maybe they should think about doing some of those videos that you play for soothing & meditation with just their camera set up pointed at those beautiful snowcapped mountains! Maybe even do some in a time-lapse form & others in real time! I would FOR SURE watched. Every time I get a peak of them in their videos I think that just the view alone HAS to make their property worth SO MUCH MORE than surrounding property that doesn't have that view. I'd pay just to stay in a tent on their property for a couple of nights just to get the real life experience of looking at those mountains. They literally look like a fake backdrop in their videos because they're SO PERFECT! I wonder what it's like to hike those mountains. To breathe that air...we truly do have an amazing country. I could go on & on about that view as you can see but I see that others get the same feeling about them as I do. ♡

If Koda is slipping backwards in behavior it means his training is lacking, which I get during Winter. He should get lounged in the round pin until he's tired before every farrier visit. You might do the same before every saddling. He just needs to be retrained. You also might consider tying him up in the loafing shed head in on a cross-tie and have the farrier working on him in there. Out in the round pen gives him too much freedom to bolt. Just some ideas. Maybe down the line a covered small arena so you can train and exercise them during inclement weather. Great video!

This is so exciting! Many years ago I acquired a property that I constructed my own 2 car garage addition. I installed 3 windows and 2 doors plus wired the entire structure. I hired out the concrete flooring and garage door installation. I was in my early 30's at the time. I'm now in my late 60's and your series brings back fond memories of when I had ambitions such that you have now. I pray everyone is well and that the build goes smoothly. God Bless!

Koda was so calm and compliant when you first got him. From his training videos, it seems a lot of time was spent on him and maybe that's what he needs now: more time spent on him. I hope you don't have to give him up. I think that the less handling they have, horses will tend to become more skiddish and willful.

I never thought of horses being a prey animal, he’s lovely, but seems like a handful. I admire not only your tenacity in working with him but also your realistic view regarding your kids safety and how that comes first. Hard decisions come with parenting. Your back wall looks great! Glad the sun is shining on your work. Here in MN we had a blizzard last night, got 9+ inches last nite and that’s no April fools joke!!

Try feeding him carrots throughout the trimming. We had a horse that was fine with trimming and then he changed and it was horrible to trim him. So being determined to help him through it we fed him small chunks of carrots the whole time and he was focused on carrots the whole time. After that we gave him one before and one after and he was good.we had a great farrier so we know he had not gotten hurt or had been mistreated, we also found he liked to be trimmed facing the woods with the barn at his back.

Great start on Gabby guys. Melissa try using a a horse lick for Coda. It will take two people at first. One to hold and use the lick when picking up the feet. Use a rope to bring the foot up to you. If he moves wrong take the lick away immediately. When he lifts the foot , immediately give the lick. Same with Saddling. Short periods daily and always end on a good note, Make the idea of lifting his feet or saddling his idea. Works every time. By the time The farrier comes again, he should be comfortable lifting his feet and enjoying a great treat. Watch " Steve Young Horsemanship" to better explain this procedure. Best of luck. Kingi looks great!

Melissa. You need to watch some of Steve Young Horsemanship. You can fix him very easily by some of Steve’s practices. His training is very easy and it all starts with the correct groundwork. I’ve watched him cure or train a wild horse in an afternoon. Really worth the watch and it’s good for the whole family to watch. Good luck with that young boy. He can be trained by yourself you just need the correct information to do it. 🎉🎉❤❤

Awesome, off too a good start. On those studs that fall on the anchor bolt/s you can also cut a inverted V notch and tack the stud in offset. The tap it into place once the bolt is tighten, and then toe nail it. Also if they pulled layout of the anchor bolts from left to right: then you would want to pull; layout right to left. Once you have the walls up use a string line, from end too end: hooked to nails; and use a small block from ½to ¾" as a spacer. Then go along the length of the wall: and use bracing; adjusting them in and out as needed. Leave them on until you have put the TJI's in place and secured them. 🙂👍 It saves a lot of little headaches down the road. 👍👍 Have a good palm Sunday tomorrow and God bless amen. See you at the next build date.😊👍👌✌️👋

Houses blow over from the wind by uplift. Like going over an airplane wing, fast air causes a partial vacuum that sucks the roof up. Nails only work on studs and top/plates because gravity pulls things downward. Uplift pulls it all apart. You need a continuous load path from the foundation to the roof. Add Simpson strong tie hurricane connectors and brace the corners laterally. Should resist earthquakes as well. PS screws beat nails; ring shank nails beat smooth shank nails.

Have followed you guys forever! Just watching the first five minutes of this episode, I thought I recalled that your next build was going to be a bigger barn for the horses. Did I miss some pertinent information or are you going to have two projects to juggle..... or am I just losing my memory?!!? Thanks guys!

@@lovechild6103 I agree. Grew up on a farm. I was just curious if I missed something that was changing plans or if i was just plain wrong with my memory!

You get more proficient with each build! It is also nice to see the kids brought into the projects in a more hands-on way; now that you are in a more relaxed build mode. Even if they feel it is "not their thing," they will be amazed when years pass, and they find themselves drawing from those skills learned.

I woke up brutally early this morning to help dig out of our latest blizzard. Afterward, sat down with a cup of tea and watched this video....not jealous at all to see you in shorts, bare feet and T shirts. Nope. Not jealous at all! LOL! Seriously, it was really fun to watch you back in building action. Looking forward to seeing "Gabby" being built. Love from MN!

You both are truly awesome and blessed with each other and immediate family. You are rare in todays America where divide seems to be the norm. Bless you from your neighbour to the north... yes a real canadian.

It is so nice having both older children helping you both now. Makes the tasks a little earlier. Hopefully you are going to put the same siding on as the house.

When I bought my OTTB in July 2021 he was so quiet and didn't seem to have a spook in him. I was shocked since he was fresh off the track! It wasn't until he settled in that he started to become more skittish and fresh. It can definitely be a safety concern or even just nerve-wracking to be around, especially for kids. I've noticed great improvement through consistent ground work and getting help & lessons from my coach and other equine professionals. I'm not sure if you have anyone near you that could come out to help you or if you'd have to send Koda away for training, but I would definitely recommend getting some professional help before selling him if it comes to it.
