Thanks for lavishing so much attention on that beautiful old continental. Older cars need to be kept running and kept beautiful, because it only has the effect of keeping our highways beautiful. In a sea of amorphous blobs that are modern cars, this continental really stands out.

Totally agree, now we get a lump of plastic and computer's. The metal we get is recycled a million times and it's thinner. Plastic is the biggest scam in automotive industries, when they start using it for engine's parts.

And in the beginning of that decade, Lincoln set the standard for styling for the entire industry that was still stuck in post-'50s excess. They also changed a lot of mechanical practices that had been in use for half of ever.

Had to pause for a second to make a recommendation. I'm not sure how often you do paint decontamination, but the best investment you can make is called a Nanoskin Autoscrub sponge. It's a sponge with a synthetic rubber base that acts like a clay bar. Works just as well as actual clay, but can be cleaned, lasts longer and is WAAAAY faster. They are only about $10-$15 depending on what grade you go with. Bought one after reading some recommendations in a detailing forum and have never looked back. Just my .02, keep up the great work 👍

@Random12231
@Random12231 2 жыл бұрын
@@jd218 Absolutely. Nanoskin offers 3 grades depending on how bad your paint is. The Fine grade is perfect for newer vehicles / well kept paint. The biggest thing to remember is, just like with clay, be liberal with the detailing spray to keep the sponge lubricated. Also be sure to clean / rinse the sponge once per panel. Hope that helps 👍

1969 was the last year for unibody Continentals and first year for the Mark III. So that year was probably a high point in Lincoln quality, at least in terms of materials and craftsmanship. Later in the 1970s there was cost saving and those Lincolns were not as well made but were still quality vehicles.

Had the previous owner not parked it in the woods, this video could not have been made. Most of this vintage of cars, even Lincolns, would have been driven until the transmission or some other major part failed, and then junked a long time ago. Had he taken care of it, it would be far too expensive for most people to afford it, including Budget Buildz. Average price for these in just driveable condition is around $10,000.00, 20 times more than the $500.00 he paid for it. He is very lucky to have found this.

Amazing how that Mark III came to shining like that after 32 years. Its paint job held up much better than Frankenstein's. You will, however, need to replace that right taillight lens ASAP before taking her out on roads, especially if failing Recess in kindergarten is a qualification prerequisite for cops in your area. There are lots of source suppliers and even individual sellers that can hook you up, if your local graveyards don't have anything. A bit of advice, although it doesn't really apply to the theme of this video: You really need to focus deeply on the engine and transmission. If you can access the drain plugs that are in the block on either side, pull them out and see how the coolant looks when it comes out; if it doesn't come out at all, or in drips, you have severe crap clogging the block which can overheat and damage the engine (yes, it's a 460, easy to find replacements, but not the high-compression, high-performance version that this one is). If it's clogged, use your pressure washer to do a blast-flush of the block (and a magnetic probe to poke inside and get out the rusty scaling the pressure washer doesn't force out; you really need to clear those coolant passages. Plus, that engine was fitted with a nylon-lined timing gear, originally meant to run the engine quietly but with an invariable tendency to wear out and break up with age alone. You will need to replace the timing set with an all-steel set; I am certain that was never done before the car's 32-year dormancy. Don't doubt me. It should be easy enough, especially with a shop manual on hand. Also, while you're doing that, make sure that there is a steel plate directly behind the water pump; if there is, DON'T discard it, it's life insurance. If you don't have one, you need to get one, ASAP (again, by aforementioned suppliers and sellers). As for the transmission, it may not indicate anything now, but it will be in need of a rebuild. When it is, you need somebody who's aware of the inherent design flaw in the C-6 transmission and how to remedy that flaw: The clutch packs do not have fluid passages to them, meaning they're totally dependent on splash-lubrication from fluid being sloshed around by rough terrain. That is simply not adequate for a luxury car that spends nearly all its life on paved roads. I learned this from my last rebuilder, who cured the problem by drilling a hole inside the upper part of the casing, tapping it into a fluid passage, and thus creating a steady supply of lubricant for the clutch pack. While you have time, shop around for a transmission mechanic who knows about all of this.

Do you know what year Ford updated the C6 with the extra oil holes. I installed a 70 Lincoln 460 and C6 into my 68 Continental. Does the 70 have the same problem. By the way that 70 C6 shifts smoother than any C6 I ever had. The C6 has never been rebuilt.I did however install new rod and main bearings double roller timing set new main seals.Yes my 460 still had the original nylon timing set. I think engine has less than 100.000 miles on it. And mine has plate behind water pump.The timing covers have open holes in them on the 460.
@aloysiusbelisarius9992
@aloysiusbelisarius9992 2 жыл бұрын
@@mycontinental3611 Very good; glad to see that your engine still had its insurance plate on it. Yes, those holes were a casting flaw the Ford engineers couldn't fix quickly enough without grinding 460 production to a halt, so they came up with the steel plate to cover up the weak spot in the front cover to prevent coolant from dumping into the crankcase. Many 460s met their demise because clueless or unscrupulous mechanics would ditch them when replacing the water pump or doing some other frontal work on the engine. It's good the transmission still works well for you. I don't really know whether Ford ever addressed the design flaw in the C-6, although I would think they'd have had to, eventually. My car had that problem and the breakdown because of it, 8 years ago. It was the local transmission rebuilder I used who brought that flaw, and his remedy to it, to my attention. Wait...you installed a '70 transmission into a '68?? Did you have any trouble swapping out the old slip yoke for the '70-compatible one and mating it to the drive shaft? Or, did you mean a Mark-to-Mark swap?
@mycontinental3611
@mycontinental3611 2 жыл бұрын
@@aloysiusbelisarius9992 I did a 70 mark to 68 sedan engine and trans swap.The 70 mark had traditional out put spline .I had a drive shaft made for the Sedan.I still have the original driveshaft and yoke didn't use it.. I had to use a traditional rear trans mount in the rear.I also used 462 motor mounts slotted the holes and made a plate to sandwich to bolt to the 460. The car drives nice and smooth.I have a quick video on my channel. And I found the build sheet.The car is a 460 car .

You're definitely right about that nylon timing gear. I nearly lost the 400 in my '79. Car would barely run no matter what, thought the timing chain was just getting stretched out and when we tore into it we found that gear that was about to fall apart.
