I’m a big Mercedes diesel fan here in Ireland. Great to see two 5 cylinders on the channel. The diesel coupes were very popular in California as Mercedes used them to help lower their fleet emissions to meet the air control laws of the 70’s and 80’s. Even though Europe was a huge diesel market, the diesel coupe was strangely a North America only car.

I'm new to the Mercedes crowd ,as I just got a nice 80 240d 4 speed from a little old dude who was a customer of mine. Coming from vws, at least I understand a little bit of German 😄 What a heck of a car, it handles really good even on those skinny little tires and stops great too. It's not really any slower in acceleration than my old diesel rabbits I drove for years. What a fanbase these cars have, I knew a little but since I'm immersed in it now,I really had no idea. From what I've read about ,it seems like it's a car that they almost made too good and can actually be repaired. And what a joy I had the other day working on it, I dropped a wrench in the engine compartment and it fell all the way to the ground! I haven't had that happen in years especially working on Mk4 or newer vws! This right here,is what I believe they are talking about when you hear about the German engineering. Edit: one car I have a bad itch for ,is a blacked out 91 560sec. I saw one years ago at a show ,and for sale at 11k. At the time ,not knowing anything about them I passed on it as I was afraid of the German money pit syndrome, but what a car it was. Someday I'll find one.

@@MrTheHillfolk I was basically bouncing between buying a car with the 1.9 PD TDI (probably a mk4 Golf PD130), or an old Mecerdes OM diesel. Ended up with a 1990 190D OM602, same engine as the wagon in this video, but naturally aspirated. I plan to drive it literally forever, running it on vegetable oil if diesel becomes unobtainable. I agree with you about the fanbase. I came from mostly Japanese stuff, having never had a German car at all, and the old Merc community is fantastic.

Bud of mine had to go to Euro for 1 year & had no place to store his 1978 Mercedes. I had a 2 car garage with my home in D.C. & offered to store it for him & no charge. He was thankful & only if I drove it every week. I had no issue with this. It was Diesel which I have no care for. I took it out 1st time & drove great & processed this agenda every week for a year. Down side, Mercedes leak Oil. Upside, I never got a Parking Ticket with it. Kept a check on the Oil & added over a year 6 qt. into the motor. Bud came back from Euro & was pleased his car was in great shape.

The 300CD was one of the greatest 'commuter cars' ever made. 40+ mpg, last a million miles (with care), low insurance rates, affordable service in general. It was truly that 'buy it and keep it a lifetime' kind of car, that you could show up at a business lunch in, or go shopping in, and be 'style-appropriate' regardless! I passed up buying one in the 1980's, and purchased a 420-SEL instead (V8 gas)...but 10 years later, I was still considering whether I went overkill or not. I'd kept up with the guy who DID buy it...and he was still loving the 300CD, at least as of 2007. One of your best videos!

That's actually incorrect about the starving of air. Diesel creates no vacuum, especially non-turbo examples. They rely on a diaphragm pump to run the brakes and other vacuum accessories. There's also no valve body or any plate restricting air entering the engine. That shut off cuts the fuel at the pump. Normally is vacuum operated but usually the rubber lines fall apart after the 40+ years.

I had one of those 220D 'taxis' in the early '80s.The seats were great, and it was reliable, except in Buffalo in the winter. You had to plug in the block heater and you had to keep it running when you went in a store, or else it wouldn't start. I clattered and fumed and puttered around town with it, but it was much happier on the open road. One day, a new highway opened up south of the city, in a remote area. It was brand-new white-as-snow concrete, and straight as an arrow for miles, with not one other car. So I floored it. Once it got over 80 mph, the engine went almost silent, vibrationless and the car seemed to rise up on rails. It was an amazing revelation.

As you were cleaning the inside, I could literally feel very texture as you scrubbed the doors cards and seats, and vacuumed the carpets. That thick carpeting and the semi hard feel of the artico vinyl, brought back memories. My dad had a W123 300 diesel sedan. 3 speed automatic, 5 cylinder non-turbo. I spent over ten years of my life cleaning the thing every weekend, until I left home to work. I was built like a tank, and it’s enamel-like paintwork was stupidly resistant to chips and scratches. It also at one stage had the diesel run-on problem, I was was accustomed to popping the hood and hitting the STOP lever on the odd occasion I drove it to university or to parties. It did nothing for my street cred, but I didn’t care. In 2003, a few years after the passing of my mom and over 19 years after it was first purchased, my dad finally sold it on. I still miss that thing. Best car ever made.

Nice job on the 300 CD. I've owned a few Mercedes Benz cars, but my favorite was the '82 300CD Turbo diesel. Was hard loaded with goodies, black/tan interior with a sunroof that never leaked. Drop dead gorgeous and no issues with the car in the 3 years I owned it, from new. My CD had Michelin X radials with a 1/2" whitewall. Handled and rode well with them and looked great! It lived in my garage, I was meticulous with cleaning and recommended maintenance. Detailed twice yearly. My wife said I loved the car more than her [she also said that about my Beech V35B]. I told her the car responded to TLC better than she did. Not one of my brightest comments...

The white wall or white striped/lettered tires were all the craze when I started detailing 30 years ago with my dad and eventually a car lot and on my own for a few years . They give a car or truck that much more to look at , class up the wheels if you will . You do some awesome work Larry , I detailed some pretty nasty cars back in the day so I truly appreciate your work .

Repent and follow Jesus my friend! Repenting doesn't mean confessing your sins to others, but to stop doing them altogether. Belief in Messiah alone is not enough to get you into heaven, you must become a new creation and be born again by responding to the Holy Spirit. - Matthew 7:21-23, Revelation 3:15-16 cf. Hebrews 10:26-29. Pay close attention to your thoughts and how you respond to your inner monologue because it has a greater impact than you think. Call on the name of Jesus and pray for Him to intervene in your life, and do all that you can to follow His ways.

17:22 A tip with the razor blade, use scotch or packing tape on the rest of the blade where you don't want it to make contact with anything to prevent yourself from accidentally gouging the paint. You can tape off both sides of the razor and just use a small little patch in the middle as if it were a tiny hand plane blade. It gives you a lot more control and peace of mind.

Back in 1994 my first car was a signal-red 1979 Mercedes 200D 4 speed manual sedan with creme interior - oh how much I hated how slow it was, but it was a great car after all. And by slow I mean really slow - 0-60 in 27sec - go figure that! I've then owned a 1978 280CE with a W116 engine from 1972 (which had the cool electronic fuel injection!) and a 1980(!) 300TD Turbodiesel station wagon. That one was special because it was a factory test car from MB which was handed to a former Austrian financial minister in 1980 for whatever reason. The VIN ended by 00000008. Though it was a bit of a PITA, the most fun car of these 3 was the coupe :) Great to see you got this 300CD back to beautiful Larry.
