Thank you for posting another excellent short video on one of the battles of the First World War. I've tried to watch them all, and I'm glad to see you back in action on the front. My grandfather's first cousin (my 1st cousin twice removed) was killed in action near Ypres in 1915 and is buried in the R.E. Farm cemetery, which I hope to visit one day. Your videos make the war come to life again.

This video has just been pointed out to me by a friend in Canada. I found it of great interest as in June of 2023 I attended the burial of my Great Uncle Sgt Richard Musgrave who was buried along with another two Canadian soldiers. All three were killed on August 15th 1917 in the Battle for Hill 70. They were among the many who were listed as missing with no known grave. In 2011 Cpl Howarth's remains were found and the remains of Sgt Musgrave and Private Harry Atherton were discovered in 2017. The three soldiers were buried on the 8th June, 2023, with full military honours in the British War Cemetery at Loos-en-Gohelle. Both Sgt Musgrave and Corporal Howarth were with the 7th Canadian Infantry Battalion and Private Atherton was with 10th Canadian Infantry Battalion.

An excellent short presentation on this subject. Your drone footage is an added dimension for viewers..... and is quite helpful as a way to visualize the tactical challenges involved in the efforts of the armies. The contrast between the current pastoral vistas and the hellish historical background helps establish a poignant aura. Thank you for your efforts. If I may suggest a series of additional Somme features..... I believe that this is a particularly worthy period to consider.

I just found the entire service record of my great-great-grandfather. VRC 24th Battalion, CEF. Sgt Richard Baxter of Montreal. First wounded by shrapnel in the knee at Kemmel in March 1916 and was shot through the shoulder, into his neck and out his jaw on the first day of Lens August 15, 1917. He survived and was returned to Canada in 1918 where he was discharged. Lived the rest of his life in the US.

This is just after the Canadians stunning victory at Vimy. Currie is now in charge of Cdn. Corp.. Meant to draw as many German divisions as possible away from Passchendaele. Two things I recall is Currie pre sighting all possible routes of German counter attacks with artillery, and have his front line troops set up past the previous German lines as there lines would have been pre sighted by German artillery. Almost 30,000 German casualties compared to 9,000 Cdn. Ty for the video..

It was interesting on this video to see the soil marks where the trenches used to be. Having visited the Somme on the ground recently, and having looked at many more battlefields on Google Maps, I'm struck by how few soil and crop marks are visible now, compared with what I think I remember from the 1980s when I first visited. Would be interested to hear your views on this.
