The cows depend on us for food during the winter and choosing when to start feeding can be a difficult decision, based on how much hay we have and how long it has to last. Today we give the cows their first feeding and have a little retrospective, a look at the year, the wins and the losses.

My biggest struggle has been fighting a depression aswell as a very long period of stress that left me wanting to do absolutely nothing. i seeked the help i needed, got out working with what i love, Cattle, which lead to me, last wednesday, having the greatest experience of my life, Helping a calf get safely to the world, and to make sure it had everything it needed to be able to survive for sure. This has definately been the best, and toughest things, that has helped me, move forward, and get new values in life. All of this, because of the inspiration your videos gave me back in March when i started watching your videos, and not a day has gone by without watching them ever since. Thank you for doing what you do Mike, And hopefully, i'll be able to visit your ranch someday, and actually thank you in person. -Mark.

Back when I was 15 I got slammed inside a cattle trailer that ended up breaking a blood vessel in my brain....., it killed the part of the brain that controls left side motor functions. I was in a coma for six days where the doctors figured I was brain dead and they were to pull the plug on me and than my organs would be donated. I came out of my coma a few hours before the doctor made the rounds to pull the plug. After that it was a long hard road to try to do the simplest of tasks let alone all the things that you need to do to maintain a cattle herd in Canada. After a year I had the ability to do everything I was doing before my accident one handed. But this accident has gave me some appreciation of the things in life most take for granted. Things that many cant Fathom being taken away I’ve learnt you best be grateful for because just like my left side can be gone tomorrow. It’s made me a smarter man I do believe for a lot of the time I find myself “thinking outside of the box” to be able to complete tasks one handed. And of course that than starts to bleed into other areas of management concerning a cattle ranch. All in all I don’t look at my accident as a necessarily evil any longer....., because if I’m honest it hasn’t stopped me from doing what I love...., and if I’m totally honest it may have made me better at the job.

Probably the biggest challenge in my life has been dealing with injuries, mental as well as physical, as a Vietnam Era disabled veteran. What has been transforming is learning to utilize an attitude of gratitude every single day. Feeling grateful for all my blessings gives me the strength to deal with the challenges in my life.

I don't comment much but wanted you guys to know how much I enjoy your videos. I'm 53 now and when I was a kid I basically grew up on my uncle's cattle farm here in east Tennessee and always dreamed of having my own farm. Other than 10 acres and few dozen Tennessee Fainting Goats ( It's true, google them ) that's as far as I made it with the farming life. I was one of these kids that played with farm sets and built my own barns for my plastic cows and pigs. I know it's a tough life, I watched my uncle struggle financially all the time but man it's a rewarding life. My wife works for the Natural Resources division of the USDA so she works with farmers every day doing cost share projects like water troughs, cross fencing, and hay storage buildings and I always look forward to the yearly picnics so I can visit with the farmers. People don't tell them enough but you guys are truly appreciated, without you ranchers and farmers, America doesn't eat. I'm a real estate broker and deal with a lot of farms and it's always nice when I sell a farm and see it remain a farm instead of 1/2 building lots. Anyways, just wanted to say hello and say thank you for sharing your interesting life with us. I wish you guys the best and pray you have an easy winter and a profitable 2019.

building the pole barn for our little 6 acre ranch has been my biggest lesson. learning to accept mistakes and accepting help has been tough but a valuable lesson to be learned. God has humbled me with patience as the setbacks with weather repeated itself continually. but seeing family and friends come and help when they can has been wonderful. and getting to know my wife better and seeing her strengths shine has been awesome!

@PatricAine.....Ouch. This comment hit too close. As a Widower for 28 years, let me tell ya 'brother', 2 years is NOT enough time to heal from THAT 'bitter pill'. Life DOES get better. It'll never hurt any less, but at least it hurts less often. If you'll allow the latitude of an 'internet stranger' to offer a caution and words of advice....Don't follow myself, (and others), down 'the bitterness stairway'. Stay involved in your family and community. Going DOWN is easy. The struggle back UP is a Bitch. Hope this helps.~Eli.

Lost my dad and business in the same week... was barely rescued by a last minute buy offer of my Utility Trenching business to help pay the medical Bills... Noticing I was in a deep state of depression I took what little money that was left over bought a backpack and traveled around Europe, Australia, and Southeast Asia for 2 years. A real eye opening experience I hope everyone gets to partake in... Now I'm back StateSide digging holes, and after seeing how the "other half" truly lives, I'll be digging them with a much larger smile on my face... although it seems hard at times, this truly is the land of opportunity.

Mike. My greatest struggle happened just over a year ago when out of the blue I had two very significant seizures. I had never had anything like this happen before and the first one landed me in the hospital for several days. I could not function as a human being, father, or husband and for the first time in my adult life became completely dependent on someone else. Now enough of the pitty party as this was also the best thing that ever happened to me as it focused me on what is truly important in life and that is my family. We are stronger together and now realize we can overcome a lot as my income was the only income which was lost for several months as my brain recovered. It is the little things as you have said which are truly important. Playing with my kids, teaching my son how to drive and how to be a productive human. Thanks Mike I always love the videos. In an effort to help you feel a little better I have been feeding hay for about a month as we had no rain this summer and had no grass for fall grazing.

I’ve enjoyed each video that I’ve watched. Living vicariously through you the life I always dreamed of. I can’t pinpoint any one thing that I struggled with through my life, but as each chapter of my life unfolded, there were different struggles to overcome. Moving from the east to the west with two small babies and another born soon after when I was a young mother. Going through a divorce and working outside the home for the first time was a terrible financial struggle and very hard on my children. Now that I’m a widow and in my 70’s it’s the loneliness that I struggle with the most. But it is what it is and we live the best we can with what we have. Blessings to you, Mike and Erin.

Good Morning Mike, Erin and the kids from Charleston SC. I grew up in Texas with Grandparents who had a small 5 Acre Farm, it is one of the fondest memories of my childhood of going to their place on weekends and summers to help with the planting, harvesting and canning. As I left home for the Navy at 17 and now since retired from it, the one thing from my childhood that I took with me was the hard work determination I saw my Grandparents had with their farm and my fond memories of the hot summer times the ability of just walking up to the trees or strawberry/blackberry patches and grape vines and picking fruits and eating them. Grandma would get on to us but having that ability to do it is something I wish everyone could enjoy. The smell of Grandma making her Jelly's and Jam's is one of those things that will never go away. One item she made we called Chow Chow, it is relish made from peppers, onions, cabbage and whatever else she added, this relish we put on mostly our beans and it is awesome. It is one of those things I can't find in a lot of place. I have the upmost respect of you and your family and the choices that you have made and your dedication. For your water situation, have a question, have you thought of the possibility of using the fire truck or getting a large water tanks and set it up on trailer with a sprayer on the back of it to help water the fields for the years where the rain is light? Not sure if this would be less of a cost vs buying hay each year.

Keep up the good work, Mike! My biggest struggle has been the loss of my father. He passed from a heart attack while baling hay last year. I lived an hour from the farm working as a county extension agent. After months of running back and forth, my wife and I decided to move back here to the farm. I couldn't live with the idea of letting it go or selling out, especially knowing my father took his last breath tending the land. I'm so grateful for my wife's support with such a big move

I'd have to say my biggest struggle was moving away from home to go to college. I graduated high school this past May and moved to College Station to attend Texas A&M University to study entomology. I am very close to my family and we rely on each other a lot to make it through the hard times. My grandmother is in the late stages of Alzheimer's and it was very difficult for me to leave since I am one of the few people my grandfather trusts to watch her so he can take a break. We are a very tight knit family so it was hard to say goodbye. Even though I am only three hours from home, it is very hard for me to go home on the weekends due to the amount of studying I have to do to keep my grades up. Through all of this, I've learned to appreciate any time I get to spend with my family when I do get to come home but at the same time I learned that you can't try to be everywhere at once. I also learned how to be more independent (cooking, being self motivated to study, budgeting) which has been huge for me. It has been tough but if definitely one of the best things I've done for myself.

My Cattle fitting and showing business failed after 10 years, not because my work wasn’t good enough but because I chose to have fewer customers but do a more complete job of marketing, fitting and feeding. When two of those customers quit raising cattle and no longer needed a Cattle Service it was all it took to start the failure of my business. I learned a person needs to be more diversified and slightly less exclusive to make some things work. I also learned when someone asks you for your honest opinion...they do not alway want to really hear the truth. Every failure or crisis in my life has led somewhere else, often to success I didn’t expect in other areas. Your determination defines you. I do think we tend to learn more from tough times than we do from good, or at least we learn to appreciate life more. God Bless you and all around you on your wonderful Ranch.

You wonder what draws us to your channel? Well, I'm a city boy who has wanted to be a farmer as far back as I can remember. Helping my uncles mow, rake, bale, or haul hay in Oklahoma in the summer, or helping a cow or ewe give birth woke something deep inside of me. I've worked blue-collar and white-collar jobs all my life, but the yearning for the rural life has persisted. My fondest and most prominent memories are of that fleeting one or two weeks of vacation when I would get to help out on the farms. I found your channel while I was looking for reviews on haying equipment for compact tractors. I watched a few of your videos thinking "sure, leaving the city is fine, if you're rich". Of course, I think much different of you after watching and listening longer. Your apparent love of the land and community is inspiring. I am now living vicariously through you, for now. I'm hoping to leave the city for greener pastures (literally) within the next year. Thank you for the inspiration. - Jeff

If you want any details on what happened, you can look it up on the internet. It was called the Snowy Mountain/Placer Wildfire and burned through our range right to our back door. Even the small community by us was on evacuation notice. The flood was the worst since 1972 when I was 12 years old. This is what happens when you live in a valley just over a mile wide with a river going through it fed by 3 large snow pack areas. But nuff said, we are surviving and will go on. That's what ranching is.

These are the type info vids that people need in their lives. I appreciate the efforts you put into production and am amazed you have the dedication after a long day to edit these. I know there are many instances that are not seen that are the real ranch life , the stress the physical exhaustion, the disappointment. Wins are too far and few but when they happen it makes it all worth it. Work hard, work smart, work safe and keep agriculture relevant it's your calling.

I have learned that one sometimes needs a break for a few days when things are tough. Also reading books, motivational and self help ones have helped me. Having a plan of what to do also helps. And friends that can help out also. Thanks for growing our beef, and vegies, ie thanks for farming and to all farmers, thanks.

Like another here, depression/anxiety has been a problem for some time.Didn't seek help for the issue as have learned with my skin as it is painted drug user, something I've not done. Used to be very active outside, but when the neighbors got a dog that challenged me right out the front door and became an issue doing chores. Moved everything down the road and that helped, but the very strong desire to take my flock, pups and jersey to greener pastures hasn't happened yet. Some good things like the few fiber organizations that now work with and help getting my wool processed into yarn and roving and actually getting paid a decent amount for my time and effort. Opportunities to learn new skills are also happening, which helps during hours not in the barn. Even being able to afford someone to help with hoof trimming has been huge!

You guys are an inspiration to many. I grew up on the farm with helping my Grandfather with hiscow calf operation. I was hoping to take it over when he passed away but that didn't happen. One of the biggest struggles for me has been the loss of our daughter when she was born. She had Trisomy 18 that made some of her organs and body not develop correctly. We got 20 minutes with her and she was gone. Our Heavenly Father, families, and friends helped us get through this trial. We know we'll get to see her again and that's all that matters.

Mike, one of my largest struggles has been losing the farm. I didn't lose the farm in a traditional way like foreclosure. I lost it because grandpa was diagnosed with Parkinsons and Dementia. When that happened my grandmother took it upon her self to play favorites, she allowed my uncles to bully me off the farm. When I say bully I mean physically attacking me and damaging my machinery. I pulled my machinery out and was accused of stealing. Through all of this, finding people like you Mike, who are gracious enough to share you life with me through the internet. Watching others farm and ranch helps me when I'm still missing the animals, longing for the long hours on a tractor, or the joys of calves and piglets. Thank you Mike.

In those 15 years I couldn't hold down a job I have been now at my job for over 4 years. Monday or Tuesday of this next week I will find out if I get a new position at a hospital this would be a great opportunity for me and I'm hoping that I get this chance. In my addiction I did not care about anybody it was all about me. Was a great time in a bad time, but I learned and went on, as we always do. The folks down here (comments) had bigger problems and over came them, good job guys, that's the way to go, adapt and go on, there's alway tomorrow for a better try and outcome, give it a try. I'll keep reading and hopefully learning too. Take care

My struggle has been a life long bout of depression and learning to cope and live with this daily. Next on the agenda is my health I quit smoking after thirty five years about two years ago and have been on a diet and exercise routine to get in better shape. About the time I quit smoking I developed vertigo and have been dealing with this now for about 18 months, but I have pills to help with that but no longer drive right now because I don't won't to have an episode behind the wheel and end up hurting myself or someone else. But life overall is good I watch people such as yourself and see the struggles of others and realize it could be different. Enjoy what you and your wife do keep up the good work.

You weren't the only ones with hard times in 2018. During wheat harvest, our combine threw the main drive shaft to the separator and had to wait a couple weeks to get parts for it (we only had 30 acres and a test plot left, custom cutters had to come and finish it for us), and then all of our winter hay burned in July of this year. We do believe it was arson, but there is always one good for one bad, thank God for rain, and we have over double the hay we did before the fire. It is not a high quality as the wheat hay before the fire (sudangrass that had some rain on it in the windrow and was real stemmy), but we are hopefully going to make it through the winter.

Hi Mike , One of my biggest struggles is learning to live with bi polar disorder and learning to except it as being a part of me that will never be cured or disapear and not letting myself be consumed by self pitty or helplessness. I now embrace the positive out of the situation and instead of looking at the whole picture I break it down into baby steps which makes it easier to cope because I am not over whelmed by everything at once . I am very determined not to become a prisoner of my own limitations and push myself to except things beyond my control that I can not change and break my habit of rejecting things before I have even given myself a chance to try them. This is some of the major changes I have been working on in the past12 months and I will continue too for some rime into the future . I am glad that your mother in law is now doing much better now I have had Pneumonia myself and almost lost my life because of it so I can understand how relieved you all must be .
