Chinese President Xi Jinping received a warm welcome in Serbia today (April 8, 2024). In the second leg of his European trip that has come after a break of five years, President Xi was welcomed by the Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, who termed him a "friend". Xi's visit to Serbia coincides with the 25th anniversary of NATO's bombing of the Chinese embassy in Belgrade. While remembering the incident, Xi said that "we must never forget this". Serbia and China have signed 29 deals today, and decided to implement a free trade pact - which could complicate Europe's efforts to "de-risk" from Chinese supply chains. Belgrade is a strong ally for Beijing, with the country even supporting China's claims on Taiwan. As Xi Jinping nears the end of his European tour, Palki Sharma explains how the Chinese president is exploiting the cracks within the European Union.

The reason for this Serbian welcome is due to the relationship between Serbia and China. After 1999, europe literally "turned their backs" to Serbia and Serbia became an outcast to europe. As a result, Serbia only had two powers to turn to: Russia and China. Russia was still recovering from the economic catastrophe of drunk boris and China was just beginning China's "economic takeoff". However, by the latter 2000s, China and Serbia began to develop strong economic ties and Chinese investment went from a trickle in the 2000s to multiple tens of billions of US dollars through the 2010s onward. In effect, China became the "economic ally" in the face of european economic blockade of Serbia. THAT is why the grand welcome of Xi by the Serbians.

The reason for this Serbian welcome is due to the relationship between Serbia and China. After 1999, europe literally "turned their backs" to Serbia and Serbia became an outcast to europe. As a result, Serbia only had two powers to turn to: Russia and China. Russia was still recovering from the economic catastrophe of drunk boris and China was just beginning China's "economic takeoff". However, by the latter 2000s, China and Serbia began to develop strong economic ties and Chinese investment went from a trickle in the 2000s to multiple tens of billions of US dollars through the 2010s onward. In effect, China became the "economic ally" in the face of european economic blockade of Serbia. THAT is why the grand welcome of Xi by the Serbians.

I'm an Indian by blood living in the United States for the last 32 years from childhood. I love my roots and often visit my village whenever possible. Let me tell you, Western governments may be against China, but not the people from the west. The reason is many of the Chinese products are far superior compared to locally made (?) and they are affordable. Chinese EVs are damn good. Tesla or any US car company is far behind China. Just my suggestion- India should settle the border and go along with south Asian countries especially China. It is difficult to take the country to the next level without the support of neighbors.
