It always baffles me when people say we know more about space then our own planet’s ocean
@itsinugami

The only credit I will give those statements is: In the ocean, aquatic animals often adapt/evolve as needed in some situations -- As an example, we weren't aware that the Frill Shark and Coelocanth were still alive and well until we started seeing them often enough to be like, "Oh yeah, they're still alive n' kicking." Plus, we haven't explored alot of the ocean, but there is a reason -- Many of the areas within the ocean are just big ol empty spaces that life occasionally passes through -- So there is like, no reason to go there.

@Rafael Briti that is not quite correct. It gets squirrely and weird, but even an expanding universe can be infinite. That being said, the observable universe is determined by the speed of light and therefore finite. In fact, since the universe is expanding faster than the speed of light (again, squirrelly physics, don't ask, I suck at explaining, there's physics channels that explain it out there), our observable universe is actually shrinking. Or rather, the amount of things within the observable universe is shrinking. At some point in the distant, distant future, the milkyway will be the only galaxy left in our universe and no one born in the milkyway galaxy after that point will have any way of knowing, that there is a larger universe out there.

@Rafael Briti welcome to the world beyond the scope of the human mind. Reality is weird. Like really fucking weird. But we don't tend to notice in our every day lives, because it doesn't affect us that much if we don't think about it. I've long since abandoned trying to understand and decided to leave it to the people who actually enjoy breaking their brains.

This channel has helped me fully realize something that's bugged me for years - people talking about the ocean like it's a portal to another dimension full of unknowable demons instead of being an ecosystem. It almost kinda seems trendy to be irrationally frightened of the sea lately, kinda like how everyone made such a big fuss over scary clowns a few years ago.

Thanks for these reaction vids. I was a Fisheries Biologist in the Bering Sea and a Chondrichthyan Ecologist for years and I find myself echoing what you say in most of these videos, especially the extremely outlandish claims made in a lot of these videos. The Barreleye Fish is extremely interesting. I was on a hake vessel out of Seattle and was catching Spookfish (the group Barreleyes are in) as bycatch. So interesting to actually hold a specimen from that group. Also, barotrauma in deep-sea fish is very common, but not always occurs. Here in California, we see it all the time with Rockfish. Unfortunately, not many fishermen realize that it is their stomach and not their swim bladder, so they "vent" it incorrectly. Great videos!

I'd consider the colossal squid to be far less threatening than the giant squid. The colossal squid has a lot more mass, sure, but its tentacles are tiny in comparison to the giant squid. Thus the giant squid is better suited to attack you than the colossal squid. Neither are truly threatening for obvious reasons, but to say that the colossal squid is just stronger and superior to the giant squid in every way would be wrong.

Architeuthis dux) is a species of deep-ocean dwelling squid in the family Architeuthidae. It can grow to a tremendous size, offering an example of deep-sea gigantism: recent estimates put the maximum size at around 12-13 m (39-43 ft)[2][3][4][5] for females and 10 m (33 ft)[3] for males, from the posterior fins to the tip of the two long tentacles (longer than the colossal squid at an estimated 9-10 m (30-33 ft),[6] but substantially lighter, due to the tentacles making up most of the length (ripped straight from wikipedia btw)

Biggest sturgeon officially ever caught was a beluga sturgeon with 732 cm and 1571 kg. So the size would be accurate! It´s just the wrong location. The beluga sturgeon is known to live in the caspian and black sea. There are records from the river danube, where they were mass caught and hunted to the brink of extinction. I feel like this fish is not well known, although it is the third biggest extant bony fish in the world!

Not to mention the colossal has the hooks. Humbolt squid are also kinda scary given their aggressiveness. Not sure how aggressive the other two are.

The humboldt squid should’ve been on this list. Those things are terrifying.

There have actually existed a fish that was at least the size of the sturgeon in that fake photo, but thicker. I dont remember the name of it but they died millions of years ago.

I'm pretty sure Dumbo Squid and Vampire Squd are two different type of squid... I don't know if they belong to the same genus though.

I hate that bullying towards the squids, they're just floppy cutesy animals swimming around, doing their business. Much cuter than certain land animals lol

Do you know if it's currently possible for us to emulate deep sea pressure in a way thats inhabitable for deep sea fish here on the surface? Like in labs or whatever, for observation
