Fisher Investments’ Founder Explains How To Navigate the Current Bear Market

Fisher Investments’ founder, Executive Chairman and Co-Chief Investment Officer Ken Fisher discusses his thoughts on navigating the current bear market. Ken says it is normal to consider changing your portfolio positioning during downward market volatility. Making changes or staying put at this point, he says, should largely depend on how your portfolio holdings are positioned to capture the upside once a bull market resumes.
Ken explains how categories that suffer the most during bear markets tend to fare better during market recoveries. In today’s bear market, growth stocks consistently get hit hard on down days and perform better than the broad market on positive days. Ken says this is a sign that growth categories may be the best bet for the coming recovery. He also reminds us that bear markets tend to bottom relatively quickly after crossing the -20% threshold-the median timeline is about one month. Given this market’s drop below 20% on June 14, Ken says now may be the time to position your portfolio toward growth stocks to benefit from the impending rebound.

This is fantastic. Next to Buffett, Fisher has educated me the most on investing. He really enabled me to see the whole picture, to scale up to a Global Viewpoint, and also, to create a framework where I always study the data presented to me as only part of the picture and search out the remaining details.

Excellent commentary as always ! Yes ! Growth investments in tech and in consumer discretionary are really starting to look like attractive long term investments. I think I am gonna skinny up on every growth name I like that reports upbeat this earnings season. Any names you particularly like Ken ? Your Forbes columns always ended with a few names ☺️. So far we’ve had Taiwan Semi report upbeat. Also very importantly - the banks are all coming in saying that the consumer and business customer look about as strong as ever ! United Health beat also. There had been a legit scare that UNH was gonna miss on higher healthcare employee wages - but somehow they’re managing through all of those headwinds - how ? - with technology !

Great video as ever. But I would love to know your view: is this yet another over-sized correction (as with Covid-19) or is it in fact a bear? If this is a bear, then (as set out in the Only Three Questions) there is a substantial drop to the bottom. I'm thinking specifically of the two-thirds one-third rule. Why does that not apply now? Genuine question. If I were forced to call it I would say over-sized correction. That implies the 2009 Bull is still running and sentiment has reset mid-bull to final third.
