A fast-living, cynical London music executive (Danny Mays) heads to a remote Cornish village on a stag weekend where he’s pranked by his boss (Noel Clarke) into trying to sign a group of shanty singing fishermen (led by James Purefoy). He becomes the ultimate ‘fish out of water’ as he struggles to gain the respect or enthusiasm of the unlikely boy band and their families (including Tuppence Middleton) who value friendship and community over fame and fortune. As he’s drawn deeper into the traditional way of life he’s forced to re-evaluate his own integrity and ultimately question what success really means.
Starring Daniel Mays, James Purefoy, Tuppence Middleton, David Hayman, Dave Johns, and Noel Clarke, FISHERMAN’S FRIENDS was shot on location in Cornwall and comes from director Chris Foggin (KIDS IN LOVE) with a screenplay by Nick Moorcroft (FINDING YOUR FEET), Meg Leonard (FINDING YOUR FEET) and Piers Ashworth (ST.

Saw this yesterday. It's just a gentle, escapist film - that takes your mind off your troubles for a couple of hours. It won't blow you away, but unless you've got a heart of stone, it should make you smile and maybe even cry. Some great lines - when the Londoners ask for four pints of lager in the village pub, the Cornish landlady replies 'There's no call for fizzy drinks at this time of year' ... which most of the audience missed but which made me laugh out loud and there were other comic gems in there too. Yes, it's a bit cliched, and yes the Cornish accents are a little OTT but having said that, on holiday in Cornwall in 2017, there really are pubs, villages and individuals like those in the film. It definitely captured the atmosphere of Cornwall, albeit a chocolate box version. Fabulous soundtrack too including one of my favourite bands of all time - The Waterboys!

So bein' Cornish an all, I'm so looking forward to this m'andsom 😁 for at least the decade that I know about, these guys have had such a good reputation around Cornwall. Just hope they don't overdo the Cornish accent. Lots of small Cornish business are involved in the filming of it which is great for the community too.

You mean some grubby looking fisherman and some vague harkening to olde music? Is that what heart means? It sounds like middle-class whimsical pity for 'the poor' - which bears no relation to reality and may as well be ignored now and ideally destroyed in a fiery blaze.

@@ruary3243 When the Romans came, the whole country was inhabited by Celts and, according to DNA testing, the arrival of the Anglo-Saxons only diluted that heritage a bit. This could have been a good movie if the writing wasn't so cliche and cartoonish and overly sentimental. I wanted to punch the main (record label guy) character in the face all through the movie. The romance subplot was ridiculous and unnecessary but the songs were good at least and there were some fun moments with the group of singers. But overall, contrary to the singing, the movie just felt tone-deaf.

Of course, and I'm sure it's probably a well made film. But my comment was about the industry - not the film. I haven't seen it, so how could I judge? But from the trailer there is easily enough footage to place this film into a very formulaic and cliched collection of past examples: Brassed Off, The Full Monty, Calendar Girls, Billy Elliot... Working class people coming together to do something quirky and defy the odds... It's unfortunate that this film is, as I understand it, based on a true story - as however real it may be, in filmic terms it is one giant cliche. It's all the more of a shame when you learn just how many talented British film makers there actually are - from set designers, riggers, carpenters, writers, all the way up to producers, directors and stars - all residing and working exclusively it seems, in Hollywood. For example, I wonder how the Harry Potter series of films would've worked out if the rights were not sold to Warner Bros. but sold to an independent British Studio. I guess that then raises the question of what makes a British film British - or a French film French? Is it the financing or the talent? :)

James Hughes so very well said! I personally feel that this is no British film. Being raised a Cornish maid through and through I may seem biased but Cornwall may be one of the few places in Britain that still have the real history and love of heart! This film is Cornish, Saving life’s, the adventure, the singing! It’s all so real and I have never related to a film more :)
