I was never the biggest fan of Mussels, but I had an idea that might make them better. Does the size of them matter? Mussels are one of the easiest types of shellfish that anyone with a fishing license can gather. They're found between the intertidal zone at nearly any rocky locations. Easy to harvest and each person in California is allowed to take home 10 pounds each, everyday. Only thing you have to watch out for is the closed months. ALWAYS call the biotoxin hotline before going out to gather Mussels, clams, scallops or any other type of shellfish.

I mean am·nee·zuhk 😂. Not the best weather for fishing lately. Sorry for the slow uploads. No chance to do the float tube video yet either. Still waiting for that along with the opportunity to do more camping videos. Going ice fishing for the first time in a couple weeks so something to look forward to. Happy new year!

One major hint for getting mussels without any sand or particles in them: put them in fresh water for 1/2 hour, then pour salt generously in that water , stir with a broom handle (large stick) then these mussels will spit out all the sand and cleanse themselves entirely. Then after 10 minutes, stir vigorously with a large stick to get the exterior particles off, drain the water, rinse once more, then ready to cook. Guaranteed that you won’t get any mussels with salt or grinding nasty flavors in them. Bon appétit

If you let them soak in salt water for an hour or so the sand should filter out naturally so when you do cook them it won't have all that sand and poop.

After harvesting mussels put them in a bucket of clean saltwater for 24 to 48 hrs. If there are sand in them it will then filter the sand out, you might want to change the water every 8 hrs or so, so they wont die from lack of oxygen, or use an airrator. Also if they dont open from cooking, dont eat them. Great vid thx. Danie from South Africa

Good one Matt!! Back in the early 70s when camping in Mexico we would forage and as a group bring in Abalone, Fish, Clams and Mussels. Great times and cleaner waters. This taste test was my lesson learned for today and I never gave any thought to cleaning them either. We had a big drum made up for the steaming but a small setup like you have would be nice too. Quick tip, if you get muscles from a sandy area, let them sit in a large container of water for 24 hours and they will excrete the sand, leaving them clean to eat. The same works for muscles found in areas with copious amounts of seaweed.
