More like a growl than a shriek. Snakes are probably the only animals more misunderstood than fishers. And it sucks because they're both so important in their ecosystems.

It is really cool to see them making a steady come back to all their native regions, all the places they lived before "Man" drove them to near extinction in the lower 48. They really are steady strong animals not to be toyed with at all. I am very glad they are not the size of a wolverine... I don't care what any scientist says, keep your small dogs and cats inside, particularly if you live in Fischer or Coyote country.

I saw one of these up in Hayward, WI. I was hiking with my dog when I saw it hanging onto a tree about 10 ft. high, at the time I had no idea what I was looking at so I took a few pictures that didn't turn out to well, I tried to get a little closer but it ran off, I asked people on facebook what they thought it was and they replied with bear/mink etc. Too thin to be a bear and too thick be a mink. Amazing experience, I hope I get to see another one someday.

I saw one while running the horse trails in Millis. It climbed a tree that had it's top busted off from lightning or a microburst, so it started back down. I had it 'cornered' (had my arms waving above me) about 10 feet above me.... it stopped, look me straight in the face and essentially stared me down! I backed the fuck off, and it took of in the other direction. I was pretty shook for a couple of days, actually. It had NO FEAR!

Seriously, something is seriously wrong with some of you people. Wanting a species to become extinct simply for acting on their natural behaviour ? For pets owners, it's YOUR responsibility to watch your pets AT ALL TIMES. If a fisher kills your cat/dog, it's your problem. You let them out of your sight. The fisher only does what all animals do : it survives, and to do so, it hunts. Yes, it's sad when you loose your pet. I've been through that. But honestly, you have only yourself to blame. For poultry, you're responsible for protecting your animals too. Enclosures, guardian dogs, keeping a close watch on your coop are all options. Loosing part of your stock to wildlife is part of life. Invest on a way to keep them protected and you'll minimize your loss. Relocalizing an animal is always a better option than killing them. And yes, wild animals attack humans sometimes, but then, so do dogs.

Key Silver yes in some ways you are right our dogs are never loose, nor our chickens- but when they chew through your sunroom and burrow tt he other side where the chicken are-- chickens are always in at night. My daughter is furious, I am not. I am not happy either, but this is my home they apparently took over the woodchucks home too and he isn't small.I just want them safely removed as it is NOT my home, but I rent and I know the landlords son will kill it if I don't find something to do safely. He killed a snapping turtle head as big as two hands so must have been old. I was not impressed.especially when people don't eat what they kill. i think the noise scares most people sound so dreadful, It sounds like someone is being killed!! same with coydogs- people always wanna blame coydogs for killing when they allow dogs to run loose. It is life- people die of many things gunna try and kill the creator? cycle of life. I feel bad for my chickens and duck but they are gone-- nothing is bring them back in the heat of the moment people will wanna kill. especially if my dog is leashed. my main worry now as it is only 5-10 foot from my leash and the hole goes underneath and can reach the basement.where my dogs are when we arent home- so I am worried for both my dogs and the cat.I dont trust wildlife here as like with bears just shoot them. btw we have a bear too which was awesome, as I told him.her to go before someone saw them. we are in the hills so .. I so love wildlife.

I make bread of grains, fats, peanut butter, whatever is handy the woodpeckers seems to like. . Again, late one night, I remembered I didn't bring in those feeders and I caught what was cleaning them out, a fisher cat. I'm glad I turned the light on and looked before opening the outside door. I saw a fisher this morning in the woods behind my house (Monument Beach) while walking dogs. Unfortunately, I did not have a camera. It was probably no more than 40 feet away and would have been an excellent photo. It was in low scrub bushes and jumped about 4 feet off the ground grabbing a tree trunk much like a cat. It looked at me and then decided to move to another tree about 10 feet further away. Luckily it was not at dog eye level and while they may have smelled it they did not see it.

Funny how all these whiners are complaining about fishers killing their cats, when cats kill birds (and other animals) for no reason at all, they don't even eat them. Cats kill everything that moves. And then they don't eat what they've killed, unless they're mousers. I've rescued a lot of cats in my lifetime, I have two spoiled rotten rescues right now. But if they go out, it's at their own risk. I won't take action against any animal that kills them unless it's a domesticated animal that comes into our yard and kills them.

Like, it's different when a coyote or wolf goes after 'em, typically that's in cases of food shortage and/or climate change. Coyotes are mostly scavengers anyways, you'd be more apt to find them in your garbage than eating your pets. Fishers actively seek out cats, it's clearly documented, just look it up. They control porcupine populations, which in many areas, are devastating when unchecked. Coyotes and other Apex predators will opt for rodents, young deer, and other easy prey over porcupines, given the option. Fishers, however, prefer porcupines over any other food, and are such talented hunters that they can kill them quite efficiently.

"Fishers actively seek out cats, it's clearly documented, just look it up." Huh, I looked it up and every reliable source said fishers eating cats was a myth. Funny how that works?
