those are mayflies. fish flies are different, and are actually in the same family as stone flies, and dobson flies. the fishfly shows traits of both. fish flies are often confused with dobson flies. but male fishflies just have the feathery attenae but no long pincer like mandibles... they are marginally smaller too.

I found this poor bug on my trampoline. It is brown it looks like a dragonfly it has 4 long wings like a dragonfly but it has small eyes, thick curled antenna, and its legs are fuzzy... it looks like it is paralyzed and it is shaking and I tried to look it up it says it is a 'Dysmicohermes disjunctus' species of fishfly like in this video here but I am not entirely sure what it is! To me it looks like some sort of moth/dragonfly hybrid lol. Please help! I feel bad for this thing.

I am reading a book that takes place in Michigan and it's during the, "Fishfly" season. The book is very descriptive, but I had to look up these creatures to see if they were real or if the author made them up. Thank you for the video, I now have a visual on these nasty things. They must be very hard to live with.

I have a question for people who live near the lake and have experienced the fishfly invasion in previous years......... Are the fishflys still turning up in the last few years? I have noticed a HUGE reduction in the variety and number of insects where I live in rural southeast West Virginia over the last 5 years. It has me very worried. I used to live in Michigan and recall the fishflys in such numbers that they actually made the freeway around Monroe slippery at times and caused accidents from the mass of crushed insects. The insects started disappearing here in S.E. West Virginia where I live at the same time that we started getting good cell phone coverage.....about 5 years ago, and has gotten worse every year since. No more swarms of varied insect species at night around outside lights. Hardly any at all! Also, this area is not a big crop production area with lots of insecticide in use . I have noticed the same lack of insects throughout the state and national park systems where I live and often hike. I am very concerned.

One; because they are an indicator of how the lake is doing. They feed on the algae so they do clean the lake in a way. Two; they feed the fish population. Having family that grew up on the lake; if people and stores would shut off their outside lights (NB used to do that in the 60's) and shine spotlights onto the water the Mayflies (which is what these are) would stay out over the water. I do that with my pond, change outdoor lights to yellow and they stay away from the house.

I live in Windsor (which is near Detroit) and especially during the summer, they're a problem! Every summer and late spring, they're all over the walls of my house, the sidewalk, the swings, everywhere you can imagine! I can't even imagine someone eating them like in this video! I've been in the area for around 4 years, and I can confirm that I still get scared of them to this very day! What's even more disgusting is when they're dead after like a day, they stay on the walls and ground, and if they're alive, they latch onto your legs and/or arms and you have to shake them to make them get off! Fortunately, they're harmless, but they're gross. So, that's my experience with fishflies as a Windsorite!

Exactly. I cant stand pest bugs like this either. And I like how some hoityy toity people say "Oh they're harmless!" I don't give a damn if they are harmless. They are still a creepy and annoying gross pest. In fact, for a bug population to reach apocalyptic levels is beyond just pestering: it's an invasion

Here's a little tidbit for ya-(I grew up in GPS on this lake) 1=FishFlys come from the bottom of the lake thus making the lake that year clean&great for fishing. And 2-they do NOT have mouths-they only live 24hr.-sheds it outer 'skin' then die-crawling right out of it's skin whole. They crackle&Snap when driving over piles of them under all our streetlights&DO smell like fish.Cats eat them-that's gross! Was this helpful or even a tad bit interesting for all of you KZfaqrs? Please Reply!

i'm from michigan. i know quite a few things about fish flies. there are over 600 types of mayfly species. the video says "fish flies". new baltimore has a "fish fly" festival. i've lived along lake st. clair or near it my entire life, where "fish flies" is the most common epithet used for this type of insect. do you live in michigan? obviously not.

OH DAMN. I probably should have stopped to see what I was talking about before I posted an ignorant youtube comment... I was under the impression that mayflies were an order of insects, and fishflies were a genus of a separate order of insects. Please look things up before you tell me I am a moron.

WHAT?!?! Who would eat them (aside from fish.. lol)??? I've been exposed to these lil' guys (and gals) my entire life. They're kinda gross- and bring a VERY fishy smell with them when they "take over". If you come to Michigan during their peak- I urge caution while driving... they CAN be more slippery than ice, if there's enough of them.

why does it have to be scientifically inaccurate? it's a nick name. it doesn't have to refer to the specie or the genus. it refers to how they come from the water, smell like fish, and are used for bait in fishing.

My daughter moved to Mt Clemens Michigan after being born & raised 18 years in Illinois... She has now experianced the fishfly population and know how she was w/one bug in the house? (EEEK) let alone a swarm of millions? I personally don't know how the locals put up w/that horror every year without moving? Those creatures would drive me out in a second! That's a hazard that the state should exterminate! why don't they?
