must admit thats how i used to clean a fish tank 100% water change , wash the gravel , ( its how my mum cleaned the goldfish as a child ), When i got my 1st big aquarium i gave up having fish because it was so much work doing that and expensive changing filter media every month . 20 years and much research later its so much easier.

Honestly same, used to scoop the fish out put them in a cup and dump all the water out, scrub the tank with a sponge (never used any chemicals) fill the tank back up with water, wash filter and put fish back in😂😭 I have a few guppy and shrimp tanks now though and have successfully bred them!😊

We all cleaned “tanks” this way. 😅 Unless you had parents well informed on fish care and aquarium maintenance , our fish were all victims of our ignorance at one point.

i work in a petstore and have my own aquarium corner, i always get really happy to help people who are new to the hobby. i always ask them to take pictures and everytime i can see the tanks grow and i can give feedback to their tanks.

I had to move a 20 gallon tank that I couldn’t breakdown at the time. Even only a quarter of the way full it took two people and a piece of plywood to brace the bottom with. Chris is fairly spot on with the assessment. I guess a 5 gallon is liftable while full, but the water alone is 40 pounds and then you have hardscape to think about too.

Picking up anything glass terrifies me. Although they may not be super heavy, I'm still horrified my hands might be wet and it might slip 😭

yeah! and not just that... the integrity of the tank itself (the resin and build holding it together) is only meant to be lifted a certain way when EMPTY. So when lifting full with water, the tank always has a higher chance of developing a leak or even shattering.

One of my bettas loves blanched cucumber. He literally jumped out of the tank to grab it and wouldn't let go ( not ivory who is a notorious jumper but ember the red betta)

I live in Australia. It's finally the midterm break so I can stay up late to watch FTR haha. My favourite livebearer would have to be the type of guppies that aren't fancy, just a bit colourful. I also love the blue endlers.

I gotta say my favorite livebearer is the belonesox livebearer/ pike livebearer. They are extremely predatory, with tons of teeth, but only 5-8 inches. They like slow moving blackwater habitat and are great center piece fish for a central American biotope aquarium. They aren't colorful but they have some good personality.

I saw the big tank and my 1st thought was giant swarm of corycats. Personally, if I had it I would probably want Discus. I advise against native sunfish as my first tank set up was Sunfish I pulled out a a local lake. It did not go well and my mother bought me goldfish instead.

I would probably fill that big tank with barbs. I recently did a 65 gallon species only neon tetra tank and I love the effect. Small fish in a big tank is definitely the way to go.

I have watched your videos for a few months now but usually end up falling asleep before being able to comment -.-. Anyways, I just want to say that I love your videos! The humor, your little friend on the mic, the information and relaxing voice here and there keeps making me wanting to come back and I just really appreciate your videos 🙂. Thank you! Btw, my dad taught me when I was a kid to wash the aquarium my fish were in every two weeks with soap and to pour boiling water onto the gravel and let it soak for a few hours XD. For the longest time I thought I was doomed to have fish because they always kept dying on me, no heater, no light and a thorough clean. I know much better nowadays :P!

I have small betta fish tanks but i use them for smaller fish and sometime i fill them with plants but no fish because its to small at that point i would never use a small betta tank to put a betta ( and i have a 10 gallon for a betta and 4 guppy's filled with Moneywort and duckweed )

Rice fish are actually egg scatters, the females will have a bundle of eggs outside the body, each morning and she will deposit the eggs on a moss or guppy grass and it sticks to it. Then it takes about 2 weeks to hatch out! Just an fyi not live bearers! Lol but I love my rice fish!!!

I'm a live bearer fan. I brought two very pregnant fish (Molly& guppy). I think now I have to many fish and had to buy 2 new 60 ltr tanks to house them. I now have a little Muppy or Gollie project which should be fruitful this year hopefully. The one big thing that you Chris taught me was to only feed live bearers once a day. Since I been doing that things just appear look so much better. I would show you my setups but literally don't know how to do it cus I'm new to all this stuff. Brilliant ftr as always. For the costume tank…first stock many dollars followed by fifty each: Cory of choice, neon tetra, white cloud, harlequin rasboras, hatchet fish of choice, amano. Twenty five each otos and mystery snails. Many plants a few rocks & wood of choice. Ponds snails are free.

I got a kit for free and grabbed some black skirts for my kids. I’ll admit I knew nothing about fish. So it’s been the fruity pebble tank with fake plants and toys and crap. But I’ve learned and I’ve been slowly transforming it adding plants and the fish are thriving!

I can hold 10-20 gallon fish tanks full of water. I also used to move 50lbs+ bags for work everyday, and it's still hard for me to life tanks that are 20 gallons. This is honestly a really good way to say it and definitely going to tell my family that.

Stocking idea for that really huge tank. Put a big log in it and put amazon sword plants and val plants around it. Small cryps for the front. Then just a massive school of serpae tetras (The blood red ones. And a few t-bar cichlids as extra eyecatchers. also a school of cory cats and maybe another type of medium to small tetra that has a different colour as the serpaes (black skirt tetras would be good).

QOTW: Mollies for sure. I have sailfin mollies in my reef tank and they are simply invincible, stunning, healthy fish. Love them, so active and so many different varieties and colours. I have a black sailfin, a white sailfin, and a speckled orange and black sailfin with a lyretail. They're just fabulous fish, always pecking at algae and debris. They even ate my initial ugly phase diatoms for me! Wild.

maybe i'd try a whole school of minnows, some driftwood, and river rock. That tank is huge! Just went to Yosemite and the river concept for that tank seems like a great idea.

1:56 “They don’t care about beneficial bacteria or cycling” As a Petsmart employee, this is so true. Surprisingly though, if you sound authoritative enough, a lot of people will listen. I’ve never been able to educate and help more people before joining Petsmart (despite its obvious flaws, exactly why I try to help). Edit: I’m not perfect either. Sometimes it’s hard to pull customers aside before purchasing their fish without seeming rude/intrusive. I have full authority to decline sales though, so I’m working on my approach.

my favorite livebearers are guppies because they were my first fish. i learned alot from them but sadly, most of them are now dead since ive had them for almost 2 years and i didnt know the proper way to care for them at the start. i got them from a family friend

Lmao. The holding the full fishtank thing reminded me, I just recently put of my 40 breeder, got everything set up, went to plu in the filter, and the stand was too close to the wall... I tried to magically have feats of strength to move it, but no. It was a sad sad day.

Over here in the EU it's prohibited by law to keep any adult vertebrates in anything smaller than 30 liters (8 gallons). 8 gallon sets are actually advertised and sold as shrimp sets. I talked to a couple of local fish stores and they refused to sell small tanks for fish.

This 100% water made me chuckle embarrassingly, because I just did this (reluctantly) with a betta rescue. Yes, Chirs, it was a legitimate rescue. I found a betta at Petsmart with damaged fins and struggling to move. I bought her cuz I figured she wouldn't get proper care in the store. She's currently in a 1 gallon hospital tank with a sponge filter and heater. I wanted to put her into a bigger tank, but she's having trouble swimming with her damaged fins. She's getting salt and antibiotics and starting to move better. I have the sponge filter barely bubbling so she doesn't have to fight a strong current. I gave her a plastic Betta leaf hammock and she spent the first day or two laying on it. She'll get a 5 gallon once she recovers. But, I had to do the 100% water change because my cats were pushing off the lid and sticking their paws in the water. They really don't care about the fish. They just like to play in water. Anyway, the betta's lid is now secure and the cats have been instructed to "look, but don't touch!" Lol!

Ooooohhhh nooooooo.... I LOVE livebearers!! Especially guppies & Platies. Specifically, any kind of blue/green speckled Platys, (Green Lantern, Blue Galaxy, etc.) & Green Dragon guppies. Those yellow & black spade-tail Endlers look cool as hell, too!!

My favourite livebearer is I haven't got one lol overall I'm not a fan of their behaviour and aggression. The only ones I've kept are endlers and mine were pretty aggressive towards my pygmy cories so I rehomed all but one which is a yellow tiger endler who only stopped being aggressive when I added more schooling fish to his tank

At a local pet store the employee said that you can just put a better in a bowl with no heater or filter but got us to bye declorinator, I guess that's why she head declorinator in the first clip. BTW I didn't but that fish in a bowl, I put him in a 5.5g

I keep native sunfish in my "koi ponds" instead of goldfish. The Longear Sunfish Specifically and any species of Bullhead Catfish, Longears are the prettiest native fish in the USA (top 3 at least) they literally look like Discus. They have tons of personality, I usually will go out and catch a half dozen while fishing and keep them. The Bullhead is just a mini catfish that is like owning a dopey dog lol Have kept them for years at a time, they live outdoors through winter just fine although I sometime will lose a couple during a particularly harsh winter but that's just outdoor fish for you.

Was watching those eating mc Donald's I laughed so hard!!!! My fav live bearer would have to be a guppy! I had a freak accident and some how when rehoming all of my guppys. I came home to find a single guppy on the floor and I saved her AND SHE GAVE ME A SINGLE GUPPY FRY !!!! So small!!! I no love them!!!!

hi Chris, in this video you mentioned that you shouldn't rinse your filter media in tap water, but cory from aquarium co-op says it takes like 1 hr + for tap water to kill the bacteria so he says it's fine
