For the last few years I have fished the Yanco Creek in NSW. Each time I have fished there I have caught yabbies and crayfish on my fishing rod. Crayfishing is banned in this area but yabbying is allowed, so this time I took some yabby nets with my to try and catch a feed of yabbies while I went bait fishing.

@@robbiefishing up here they can get to a fair size, we mostly get them around the 4 or 5 cm size but over the last couple of years I have managed to catch some that were almost double that, not counting the claws. There are two different species that we normally encounter here, first is the long arm shrimp and the other is the rifle shrimp.

Thanks Phil. I don't understand why they are there in winter but not in my area. Must be too cold here. I push the line through the sinker, and then tie something only the line, often a small stick. This is to stop the sinker running all the way to the hook. Then I just tie the hook on. Sometimes I use valve rubber and a match as the stopper. Haha

15:19 hi rob, you have a lot of problems with your red bait cages tangling your drop nets. If you know a welder, do what I did. I welded a thin steel rod across my bottom ring which also has half a chain link welded in the middle of the rod to hold the plastic bait cage using a small carabiner clip. I also screwed a lead weight in the bottom of my bait cage. If you can let me know how I can attach a photo to this comment section, I'll send you a few photos. Any cheers Dave

Hi Dave, that is an excellent idea. If I was a bit more of a handyman I would 100% do that. The bait bombs definitely work better in open top lift nets. They work OK in these nets provided there is no current. Ii usually put a couple of sinkers in to help.

Couple of things in nsw: you can actually, legally release carp. I had a heart attack when I read this. I’m not kidding. Reddies Im not 100% sure. Apparently you can but you can’t be in possession of live Reddies (in a Livewell). Got 8 Reddies and 20 crayfish (one was smack bang on 10cm male (used the gen pores to identify)) but since we only got one, decided to chuck back because doesn’t suffice the mess for one). Tell you what: all the Jen’s 🤣. One was nudging 16cm carapace length (easily my age). Basin crayfish numbers have really increased well. I might head back myself to the basin tomorrow again in the boat just for Reddies. Lots of small crays and most of the new ones were actually Jennie’s. Not in berry but the gen pore she has. Still a few males. Really interesting.
@robbiefishing
@robbiefishing 11 ай бұрын
Hey mate thanks for the report, and well done. You are 100% spot on about NSW. You are allowed to release carp AND redfin where you caught them, but are not allowed to be in possession of them if they're alive. Some people just can't bring themselves to kill something that they don't want to eat. For some, their religion forbids them from killing anything unless it is to be eaten or used. I doubt very much that anybody, anywhere in Australia would ever be charged with refusing to kill a living creature. The government can force people to kill anything, but they CAN prohibit people from relocating fish and establishing new populations of pest species.
