Cut the bottom hook on a two hook fly. The fish tend to hit larger prey in the head section. IMHO

Love the streamer content, keep it coming! FYI Kelly recommends cutting the rear hook if needed, more often than not they eat prey headfirst so you tend to get better hookups with only the front hook vs. only the rear hook. Plus with articulated streamers if your line is tied to the front hook instead of through the articulation to the rear, it lowers the chance of the fish rolling the articulation and popping free. Again thanks for the reality check, we all have those same days, even here in Montana! People come here expecting a 40 to 50 fish day and get skunked forgetting to look at the beautiful scenery around them, and being on the water.🤷🏼♂️

Hi Alex, I’m a UK based (home for you?) fly angler. INSPIRATIONAL! One day back to NZ, I’d love to fish with you. I fish mainly still water, I’m pretty good but I learn something from watching you every time. I don’t fish lures much as we call them here but what I find is this. Nymphs, dries etc a few takes and high hook-up. Lures and streamers loads of hits but low hook-up. I see the fish get aggressive with the lure rather than want to eat it. My cure? Don’t strike at the hit (like you would on a nymph), pause, speed up and sometimes they hook themselves sometimes they give up but you catch more. Good luck!

Hi Alex, thank you for all the awesome content! I am by no means an expert but I’ve heard Kelly Galloup mention that the majority of hookups on articulated flies come on the front hook. As you can only fish one, you may want to try cutting the back hook and leaving the front. Have no idea if that’ll help the hook set percentage but figured I pass along. Thanks again for everything you do and keep up the great work!

I would agree, he said if you could only have one hook it should be the front one. Fish attack the head. when setting the hook on a streamer set down stream to the bank. love the vids. keep up the good work. puts a smile on my face every time.

In Alaska, we often fish black rabbit fur leeches with dumbbell eyes and a trailing hook for rainbows by letting the fly swing. Obviously, you need enough current to keep the fly off the bottom. The hookups are generally very aggressive and once on, you seldom lose the fish -- however, we do use barbed hooks. A fly that is being stripped moves at different speeds and if you strip just as the fish strikes you may be pulling it out of its mouth. With big flies, you never know where the fish hits on the fly, possibly not at the hook.

Firstly Alex beautiful video. Wee tip (from an angler like yourself and not just a willy nilly stupid comment) slow your retrieve down a tad. Reason you were getting a lot of takes but very few hook ups was your retrieve is slightly to fast, think of gears 1 - 6, you at first few fish on your streamer were pulling at gear 4 and a half, think gear 3, you will be amazed at the extra few fish netted and returned off course. To much excitement pumping through your veins, know the feeling.😁

Just back to the US from Argentina on a fishing trip. I was chucking streamers the entire time. If I heard you correctly, you were using Kelly Galloup's fly. I know Kelly. His is the first shop I stop at when arriving in Montana ( Slide Inn ). Kelly is known for his streamers. I did pretty well on them last Summer.

I'd love to fish that water with streamers. Although I love fishing all kinds and sizes of flies, my passion is streamers. I started tying at age12 around 1966. Been at it off and on ever since. One type streamer that I've not tied yet, are the articulated streamers, but I'm working toward getting the materials to take a shot at it. Dude! Really enjoying the tunes and subtle and creative editing tricks. As others have commented, wonder if cutting the trailer hook was the way to go. Here in BC Canada we can only fish single barbless too so I feel the struggle between cutting the front or back hook

Nice video Alex. Sometimes trout are more into chasing streamers away than eating them. On those days, like you observed, nymphing is more effective. However, some days fish will pounce on streamers and eat them aggressively. Those days are so much fun! How could that stream be low after all the rain the North Island has received?

Been watching for a few years and been pretty quiet. Been excited to see you enter spey and asking about streamer fishing. Biggest recommendation for streamer and spey, don't raise the rod until you feel the weight of the fish on the line. Play a bit of tug of war direct with your fly line and your rod tip at the fish. Once you feel the weight you can then raise the rod tip.

Hey mate, I notice you are fishing upstream quite a lot with your streamer, after the trout eats your fly it will still be somewhat moving towards you with the current. As others have said below, a more committed strip strike will likely help you in this scenario. Another change I would suggest is keeping your rod directly inline with your line, a lot of your striking effort is being absorbed by the tip of your rod bending.

We all know what it's like when you haven't been able for fish for long and all you want is to catch something and for whatever reason nothing works out and the pressure builds. HYPED AS F*CK FOR THE NEXT SOUTH ISLAND DIARIES!! 💥💥 PS: regarding streamers I know it's more fun to catch on big flies but smaller streamers catch big fish too and sometimes that's what's needed to get the fish confident in the take.

Hey I was seeing you we’re setting the hook with youre rod tip more than strip setting. you should practice strip sets for large fish. But I guide in Montana and when I do normal sized trout I tell my clients to feel the first head shake with there stripping hand hand then raise there tip. Also a stiffer fly line is better for streamers.

Alex, do you use a proper hook sharpener on stream? If your missing strikes give it a couple passes over the diamond grit and you'll be solid.

I didn’t get a great look at your streamer technique but… try killing the fly when you see the fish about to eat. Also agree with the guy who said cut the trailer hook. Lastly, you’re right.. it sometimes just goes that way with streamers..

I can recommend George Daniels book „Strip Set“ in case you want to bring your streamer fishing to the US-level. You will need to tear out the foreword though.

I huck streamers and 99 of the time i get them on the swing ....Rarely stripping my fly , but ot does happen just not that often . And after a few bites woth no fish in my net i have changed colors and that works for sure landing the same fish . Oh and it counts if the fish is in the net 👍.....thanks for the great video .....🎣

Nice to see you out enjoying you local rivers Alex. Ours have taken a hammering over the hill from the cyclone, it breaks ya heart to see the devastation on the river beds let alone peoples homes and lives. I hope the trout have found some safe refuge somewhere otherwise it will take a very long time for the fishery to recover. Cheers dude.

As noted by Nobby Nobbs, the strip strike works best with streamers. When fish hits keep rod pointed at fish and strike by stripping vigorously with the line hand straight back to set hook. Don't know the science, but it cured my misses. Well, cut them in half. It's a technique used by tarpon fishermen. Can't hurt to try. Great content!

Interesting. I just got back from a Dorado fishing trip in Argentina. I could only catch those fish using "strip set" Unfortunately, I lost a lot of opportunities by raising my rod tip ( trout set ).

Hey Alex, been watching your content for years and this was a great video as usual, loved it. But I gotta tell you when you said you cut the FRONT HOOK OFF, I knew you were going to miss more fish than you should. When you have to, always cut the back hook bud. The majority of trout target the head of other fish they intend to eat and leaving the front hook on will (or should) increase your hook ups. Good luck, take care and be safe.

So easy to miss a strike with the big streamers, I always try to concentrate on a proper strip strike, but when a big trout comes out of nowhere, instead of striking back with the line, up the tip of the rod goes, and Bye Bye fish 😭

No beats here. You pay for your licence and you can fish on any public water or where Fish and Game have negotiated access through private land. Or you can ask land owners if you can access rivers by crossing their land.

Hi Nick, to fish for trout you basically need only two licences, first the NZ licence to fish both the islands and you need a Taupo licence to fish the lake and waters flowing into that lake. The annual NZ licence is $145 and the annual Taupo on is $99. So for $245 bucks you can fish all over NZ! Must be the cheapest licence for so much water anywhere on earth and we have it in a place called Anglers Eldorado. Sure, foreigners like you will be charged more and for some back country waters you will need a permit so the search & rescue guys can find you and there are a few Maori lakes where you will have to pay access fees (Koha), but its a beautiful setting and well worthwhile the long trip, and think its just a day away from where you live now, on a fast jet! Cool stuff, as always, Alex. You are so right about the summer. I currently can’t access my fishing spots on the Manukau. Six access tracks closed and 10 major slips on the foreshore. War zone. Ugly. I’m no streamer junkie but I wonder if you cut off the wrong hook on the streamer? Maybe having a hook closer to the head of the fly is important? Time to experiment?

I’ve wanted to fish NZ for years, how long in advance are you booked up(she said!) i have a son working in Melbourne, it seems sensible to combine NZ with Aus when we visit next. I like the idea of heli-fishing, for the spectacular views as much as anything. Is that something available local to you and what are aprox all in day rates?

Hi Alex, I hope you survived the first two weeks of February without much damage. The weather was really crazy. I was right back in New Zealand when I saw your video. My son and I were fishing and hiking in and around Turangi the whole month of January. We were incredibly lucky because we had only one rainy day until the departure weekend. Also in the 3 days on the South Island on the west coast we had only sunshine. I am very curious about your next video.

I loved your camera set up for the brown refusals at 19:30 and the spook finish. Hindsight suggests a bit of drag maybe and not the best position to attack from? In real time how long does it take you to set up that situation. I’m thinking it’s a big commitment on a rare day of solo fishing where you have sacrificed a lot of opportunities. Cheers bro

Always found that l missed fish when l stripped, with an angled rod. Now, l always strip with my rod pointed directly at the fly. Miss substantially less fish

There’s a catch 22 with articulated streamers. If you’re going to break a hook off, I’d lean toward doing it to the rear hook. The rear hook is prone to fouling, by hooking on the line or wrapping around the head of the fly. However, it’s been my experience that rainbows tend to short-strike streamers, so you risk losing these fish if you break off the rear hook. So, do you want to risk having more fouling by breaking the front hook instead? To avoid this conundrum altogether, I prefer large single-hook streamers, like Doug McKnight’s Home Invader.

I didn't think you did anything wrong. I just think those articulated US streamers are too heavily dressed. Especially given that one set of hooks had to be removed. Try sparser dressings and I think you will turn those hits into landed fish.

I've been in a 'funk' with fishing before, once went 8 months ( no joke ) without even a tap on the line. I had great luck when I first started, then 3 yrs later I was skunked for that long, nothing. Still going 14yrs later! The frustration mounted as I tried a new technique called 'streamer fishing' and it was tough days! ( yeah yeah, the whole confidence in the fly thing too ) and I thought about hanging it up; but very glad I didn't. Streamer hits are big, sometimes shocking, but a lot of times the fish are sideswiping the fly out of the way, not necessarily eating it. Could be a territorial thing, could be because the Mrs. is in the redd, could be because that cool new Intruder just pisses them off. Try leaving them be for a while, move upstream and do the drift again. Try different strip rhythms. Let them almost swim away with that big-a$$ streamer then hit, a-la dry fly. Try jumping up and down and yelling to get the bad feeling out!! LOL. Look where you are, Alex. You are surrounded by some of the bucket list places for fly fishers around the world, and you are grumpy that those amazing fish, some of the spookiest ever aren't biting in low water? C'mon mate, it could be a lot worse. Slow down to speed up. And that's my lecture for today....lol. Don't worry, mate. It will come back. Keep on pressing on! Everyone is restless after the stupid Covid time warp. Look around and smile... the fish will surprise you again. Stripset!
