God, what an amazing channel I cant stop watching it! You should put a whole section dedicated for surf casting lines like the berkley x9 for example *which I already saw* against others in 30 lbs to see which one is the winner. in the range 50 to 130 usd line. 300 mts spools

8:19 You said it’s “a beautifully made line” but those initial shots right at the beginning showing vast differences in shape due to what might be line twist (which then you thought was not) belies that statement. It looked like impurities and bits of “stuff” caught up in the production process. For the price of $139/300m I think I’m better off spending $20 on 300m of AliExp’ 12 strand braid, some of which have performed quite ok.

I understand your point but there is a difference between a numbers based analysis of something and a real world experience. The line was super smooth, supple and generally top tier in user experience. Saying that, a close look under the microscope revealed some inconsistencies which almost every single line has when closely inspected. A slightly loose strand here and there or a bit of weave that isn't as tight really doesn't affect the user experience, something which is hard to quantify. I also mentioned I got a lot of wind knots, which may be due to how supple it is and possibly affected by wind more than an extremely stiff line. There are pros and cons to almost all lines, some excel in conditions where others fail. I try to offer a 100% honest option on everything. If I have used a line for long enough to have an opinion I will state as such. It was a similar situation with the Gosen 16. In the lab tests it was very average but people were were saying it was hands down the best line they had ever used.

I got 15 kg 16mm version of this line. It's very slippery line. When I tried connected to the swivel with uni, palomar and 10 different knots I got 40% of the strength. Not even half. Please run the test with the best knot for swivel connection or hook or ring. Thank you. BTW amazing test.
@thelinelaboratory
@thelinelaboratory 4 ай бұрын
I dare say the issue is that you are knotting the mainline of braid. It doesn't stand up to that very well and 40% sounds about right. The benefit of an FG Knot is that you never have to put a knot in the mainline, it can all be done on the tag end so keeps a lot more strength.

I love the knot test section. I want to know the real-world line breaking strain. In this case, around 20lb b.s. I wish that manufacturers would just state knot breaking strain.
@thelinelaboratory
@thelinelaboratory Ай бұрын
Too many variables to accurately quote a knot breaking strain. There are so many different knots and even more ways to tie them so it would be impossible to quote something with any accuracy.

Thankyou for the tests. Starting to see a trend with some brands with their claims and actual performance. Such a disappointment to see an expensive line only to perform sub par. Can you please do some tests with ultra light lines? The ones used for Aji fishing. Like 0.2-0.6 PE. Thanks
@thelinelaboratory
@thelinelaboratory 10 ай бұрын
It appears to be the law of diminishing returns, you can spend double the amount and its only marginally better. Saying that. this line is beautiful to use in the real world, super supple. The user experience is hard to test. I do have some of the ultra light lines, down to PE 0.3 which i will get to testing soon.

@@thelinelaboratory diminishing returns definitely still influences purchases. I feel like it’s all marketing in the end and most anglers have their bias/favoured brand. Personally have tried many brands and they all seem relatively similar in real world performance. As for lines being marketed with the Si2 coating to help with water repellency it’s definitely there but it disappears really quick and just goes back to regular braid. Tried Signlon ADV, Daiwa dura sensor Si2 and other variants. The coating doesn’t last long and when the coating wears out the braid becomes weaker to abrasion it seems.

The diameter of the braid lines are hugely different from the specification.. It would be nice to compare the fluoro & mono line's real diameter vs specifications...
@thelinelaboratory
@thelinelaboratory 10 ай бұрын
I have tested a few mono lines and the measured vs quoted diameter is much more accurate compared to braids.
@Seconds155
@Seconds155 10 ай бұрын
@@thelinelaboratory I was thinking about this result also, because it's much more easier to get the desired diameter in mono. After FG knot the braid gets weaker than quoted tensile test, maybe there is not so much tensile strength difference between a good 0.30mm mono and 0.12-0.15mm quoted braid because in the end they are most of the time are in same diameter and won't help for huge casting advantage?

Expensive PE line selling point is in its suppleness... It's required due to the repeated underhand casting even while doing jigging on the boat, Japan style party boat jigging trip... Stiff line simply inconvenient, hampers distance of casting jig, tiring, line sound, etc... 🤷‍♂️

Firstly love the channel, keep up the great work. One quick question I do have though is that in this review you say the stated diameter of the pe2 line is 0.180, where did you get this from? I’ve only seen them quote the pe for each line not the actual diameter, which for pe2 the diameter should be 0.235 shouldn’t it?
@thelinelaboratory
@thelinelaboratory 6 ай бұрын
Yes, I couldn't find anywhere that Daiwa listed the diameter but I did find it on a couple of other sites. www.tradeinn.com/waveinn/en/daiwa-saltiga-12-braid-ex-600-m/137002741/p and www.pechextreme.com/en/braids/3165-daiwa-saltiga-12-braid-ex.html where both had it at .180mm. This definitely seems like an underestimation but it was all I had to go on.
@nils7238
@nils7238 6 ай бұрын
Yep totally get that, only thing I would say is that those 0.180 are not Daiwa advertised and way too thin for a pe2 line. At the advertised PE2 diameter of 0.235 your measured values make more sense. Thanks for a great channel and keep up the great work. I’m just testing out 0.6 expedition, so far so good, thanks for that test too mate.

True, you can try Shimano Grappler, its around 53$AUD from Anaconda if you get them to Price Match. It seems to be working well for me. I also have Varivas Avani Casting PE and Varivas 8 I ordered from japan for ~45$ per 300m spool. I would have paid upwards of 90$ per spool here. We just get ripped off so hard over here as consumers on braid.

Man i have i reccomandation to you. Before testing the line, you shoud strech it a little bit going fishing a couple of times. It's useless to do this kind of work with a new braid...
@thelinelaboratory
@thelinelaboratory 10 ай бұрын
I understand your point but its not practical for many reasons. First, i have proven that line degrades with use, so do you standardize the number of casts to ensure the testing is equal? The number of catches? For me to respool a reel after (for example) 20 casts or whatever the criteria is just isn't realistic. I get a lot of line donated to me for testing, and that is about 15 meters. I cannot spool a reel with 15m of line, and i cannot ask for 150m be donated each time. Given the limitations of the real world, this is the best standardized testing i can do right now.

@@thelinelaboratory Ok, i understand your problem, atleast u should stretch the line at the half of is powerage after have it wet. I think it will be mo realistic then

@@dirklbjbraid doesn't stretch much and it's usually a lot stronger than the package says. It can be twice as strong as it's rated.
@teeanahera8949
@teeanahera8949 8 ай бұрын
There’s a logic and scientific problem with your idea. Lines are being tested against each other here, it is essential that each line be tested straight out of the box in order to reduce any variables that would bias the outcome of tests. Testing lines which have all had the same treatment gives the most accurate results. Stretching them, apart from being wildly impractical, treats each line differently as you cannot assume all stretch is identical, ie very unscientific as you’re introducing a new variable into the test. As long as all lines are treated the same then the test results have more validity.
