with the surf being too rough, we decided to hit the south jetty for some rock fishing. it was my first time catching a lingcod from the rocks. he was dead on 22" so he was a keeper. I used a 7" bass worm for bait and a sinker weight of 1 to 1.5oz. this was during an incoming high tide.

Hey PK. I want to thank you for making such great videos. You've helped me into the world of ocean fishing, 100%. Saved me a lot of cash on gear, too! I love the videos PK! Got me and my dad into surf fishing 'bout a year ago and they're extremely helpful to newbies like me. Gotta say though I wasn't happy about you throwing that line down on the rocks at around the eight-minute mark. Super uncool! You have to set a good example when you post these videos online, and even if you didn't record you have to keep our waters and shore clean. It's the duty of every fisherman to clean up after themselves so the fish and ecosystem stay healthy. Otherwise it is a great video though! Keep it up

@@Bo-gi8zw we’ve all done our fair share of bad stuff and Im not refuting that, but it’s not unfair of me to point out when I see someone doing something wrong. Throwing plastic line right onto the rocks where it’ll eventually go into the ocean is pretty shitty.

I not a fan of jetty fishing why we can't have docks or.platforms to have better access to our ocean where it's less dangerous to fish the jetty's are not easy to walk on and not intended for public access Like make a pier with cement with rails instead of rocks...

Yeah, I've fished the same spot as you. Lots of hang ups and if you use bait the crabs are on it like crazy. Artificials are the way to go, you have taught me well "grasshopper". But I have always been really wanting to try the north jetty. From what I've seen it looks fairly dangerous. The rocks are bigger and wasnt planed for easy public access. But it isn't fished hardly at all. Have you ever tried to venture out on it? What's my chances for comeing back alive? We'll see what the weather is like in May. Buy you dinner. Sincerly, Lewis.

Hi again PK, great Lingcod, that must have been exciting. I'm planning on fishing the Oregon Coast at Gearhart and I was curious if you had ever fished there and how good it was for Surfperch. Out of curiosity how frequently do you catch surfperch at a beach like that on average, I know it varies. Also I know these could be odd questions but I'm new to surfperch fishing and I would really appreciate the feedback. Thanks!
@oregonlife
@oregonlife 7 жыл бұрын
yes, I've fished gearhart twice before. I did ok, just have to move around a lot to find them. I actually do significantly better at barview jetty than gearhart. but these guys move around a lot, it's just hard to say that one spot is better than the other. I know one friend who does extremely well there at gearhart. I always welcome the questions - good luck.

not on the newer ones, that did happen to me with my old stradic FJ where it scraped against my knuckles. pretty annoying. another shimano reel that does that to me is the sedona 1000. if the can make the bail wire a little more round, that would eliminate it. looking at my shimano reels more, I noticed they could've done a better job with the bail wires (or maybe these engineers have tiny ass hands and it doesn't affect them while testing it).

Cool video and nice fishing, but if a fish is on the edge of being legal it’s probably better to be on the safe side and throw them back. That’s how I try to fish at least if I’m keeping. Recently we got some cheap kayaks to keep on our sail boat in Southern California and so far I’ve gone out once with a friend and we mostly just caught mackerel but it was still really fun. Did hook up on my first spotted bay bass and my friend got his first sand bass so that was cool. Not really big into fishing yet so need to get some salt water gear and line. Defiantly need more then a trout pole with a different spinner reel with 14 pound line on it...

Something kinda long like a salmon rod works fine. Doesn't have to be massive. And some strong line like 50 lb. If you go light there you can still catch them but you will lose more bait than you catch fish. The rocks are sharp and so are there teeth .You can yank them right out the water that way and not lose all your tackle. Especially when just learning to jetty fish. Going there tomorrow. There is a pier and brewery next to it. So you can throw in a crab pot and grab a beer while you fish.

Just a thought if you only use light leads say 2 to 3 oz ,then try an English carp/pike rod with a 12 foot length with a 2 and 3/4 lb test curve or a 3 pound test curve matched with a decent fixed spool reel.I take a multi section ( not telescopic ) all over the world for use with float, bottom gear or artificials but remember that they are not meant for ultra light spinners ,unless you use lead with them .the beauty of these rods is that you can put them in a suitcase when taking them on a plane, but you can get these rods with in 12 foot rod with 2 or 3 sections and if you use them a lot I would pick the 2 piece If you check KZfaq you can see them being used from the beach ,with a float or artificials from piers or the rocks ( I say English but Diawa ,shimano or even Shakespeare make them )

Thanks PK. I'm PDX based so if you ever want a fishing partner, please let me know. I fished Saltwater Bays for 30 years in Texas, but not much in Oregon.

Maybe if you use a Carolina rig instead of a dropper loop, you would not loose so many rigs?

That’s the downside to using a bottom bouncer in rocks, they hang up all the time.

Morning PK. I know you use the high low setup. Ever use a Texas rig set up off the jetty?
@oregonlife
@oregonlife 2 жыл бұрын
Yes. I usually use a Texas rig when fishing from a boat too.

@@oregonlife Yeah, new to the coast and surf fishing. I’m an inland catfish guy that’s buying a place on the Oregon Coast. I’ll have to adjust my game 😆👍👍

You like to hold the line with your right index finger while waiting for a bite. Is that so you can feel a bite better?

PK. I'm down in Florence and I'm wondering is there is access to the jetty for those of us who are in their 70's.
@oregonlife
@oregonlife 6 жыл бұрын
The jetty is open to everyone. But just be extremely careful and it's pretty dangerous. Don't go when it's raining, the rocks are slippery. Going on them can be a precarious balancing act. I don't jetty fish much due to these safety concerns. Good luck, and be safe.

OK. At my age I will stay on the beach. I have noticed that your surf rig varies; sinker on the bottom and sinker above the bait. Is one more effective than the other?

Try a float and a bobber stopper and you wont loose ''any '' gear.You can slide the stop up up to the depth you want to fish and the line slips thru float and stops. If you need some floats give me a shout. I can show you how to make your own stoppers. I'm in the phone book. Do you live in Eugene?

Nice action PK. Love your channel. Could you possibly do a short but detailed vid about exactly how you tied up that rig??? I normally fly fish or use spinning tackled for trout on streams in Colorado and have tried fishing for trout in reservoirs using exactly your trout rigs for lakes and had success (Carolina rig)! I want to learn more rig setups though. Thanks again.
