I meet up with Justin & Nick for a sail around the North Shore of Oahu in search of fish for dinner. I learned a ton from these guys and we managed to catch some delicious fish. Great sailing, fishing and diving made for a fantastic day on the water. Check out their youtube channels for more great content.

My brother has a 37 Ft Sailboat. We fished a lot up on Lake Erie and Lake Huron with it. We trolled for Bass up around the Bass Islands on Lake Erie, and caught a bunch. We fished with a down rigger on Lake Huron. We caught a huge King Salmon, a nice large Lake Trout and a bunch of pink salmon at DeTour Pass on Lake Huron.

Trolling a lure eveywhere while under sail is easy unattended fishing. Fish that are not too small and not too big will come right up to your boat 10-20 meters behind, while larger problematic (like too large 30kg plus) fish will hang well back and take and destroy any lures, so keep lures in close and experiment with line-out length. Dragging hand lines around will get you snapped off every single time - you need a 15KG game rod and a 15KG lever drag reel with monofilament on it and learn to set the lever 'strike' setting at half the line breaking weight - now you get to fight everything you hook.. edit: set drag like this kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bLBxbLx6nNXRnYE.html

Totally agree with Steve. Invest in a rod and reel for trolling. Nothing as exciting on a sailing trip like the zzzzzzzzzzz sound of the reel when a fish is on!

@@svzigzag5898 Just by watching and listening to others. Fish are very curious and hungry and will check out anything at all for an easy feed, especially in deeper water. Smaller fish hide from predators under your hull while underway too - larger fish know this.. Imagine how surprised and grateful they are to find a lone rapala just back a bit from your yacht, yum yum!

HI Sam, cool you are getting started fishing, nice video. Now the hand lines are not a good set up, you can loose a really good fish. Try to a get a 6o , six OH , reel with 50 or sixty pound test line and rod so when you troll you can fight the fish with drag adjustment.You do not have to buy a round clamp on rod holders you can use straps with clips to the reel. More offshore is where the larger Mahis and Wahoo will be. Your first Wahoo will blow your mind, the fight and awesome amount of fish, will feed you a long time. So nice to see you getting started. Remember to get or make a gaff. bamboo, a steel gaff hook, line to wrap it and epoxy coat, or a store bought gaff. 40lb Wahoo and Mahi are waiting for you. Try fishing near the FADS fish attracting devices, bouys. Good luck. Cheering you on from 90274. More offshore, mo better bro.

@eagleviewhd
@eagleviewhd 4 жыл бұрын
Baba Yaga trolling speed is critical. Freshwater trolling should not be faster than 1-1/2 Knots, while saltwater trolling is best around 3-1/2 to 4 knots. You also have to vary your depth depending on what fish is in the area. Sometimes you need a down rigger to get the lure to the correct depth.

Seemed Justin had much longer flippers, for deeper free diving?, compared to yours which is why he went so deep?
@jgalt99
@jgalt99 4 жыл бұрын
It's not axiomatic that longer flippers = deeper free dives. Longer flippers give you more force per kick, but also are harder/use more energy per kick as well, requiring you to metabolize more oxygen. You'll get down to the bottom faster, but won't be able to spend as much time there. Everyone's physiology is different, some very fit people just can't hold their breath as long, although people with endurance sport backgrounds also tend to be better at diving.
@Mike__B
@Mike__B 4 жыл бұрын
@@jgalt99 Very interesting, I always assumed the flippers simply allowed you to use more of that force in a useful (propelling) way. When I swim without flippers I don't move very fast, with flippers I feel like I can zip through the ocean but don't feel like I spend more energy doing it. I mean I can swim a pool length and feel the burn from doing it, with flippers I can swim a pool length without even using my arms and I'm good to go again, and again and again. Maybe I just have poor swimming form.

Also watch out some fish have poisonous flesh (not many) and some fish have dangerously toxic spines (quite a few). Google ciguatera, LionFish, these are the two main ones I can think of, these two will put you in hospital. I'd like to chip in and buy Sam a reel when he's back on the water again.
