In this episode I go over over fishing reel maintenance for a Penn Spinfisher V. A extraordinarily common deep sea fishing and sport fishing reel used world wide. I show you how to take apart, service, and perform routine maintenance on a fishing reel. I also show you how to do some fishing reel repair on the bail and handle systems. So, if you've been having trouble or are looking for a DIY video on how to work on the Penn Spinfisher series reels, you've come to the right place.
Enjoy,
Tight lines & good vibes.

Word of thanks, first day of surf fishing and my rod fell over in the wave for a brief 15 seconds, sand grinding everywhere. This help me dismantle and clean and put back together. Truly appreciate it !

Heath thank you for yet another great video. I have a Penn Battle II 4000, figured it would be similar and it was. I couldn’t get the main gear to pop out like yours did, so i left it all in there. Cleaned it out as best i could and lubed it up, it bail really well as well. Even with a somewhat partial clean and lube, it works like new. Thank you.

Thanks a boat load for watching and sharing. Yes, the battles and spinfishers on the inside are all similar. And yes, that main gear can be a little tricky to get out. Regardless, glad to hear you got it all cleaned out, and back up and running. The cover that houses the bail trigger and spring, is going to need to be lubed up often, otherwise your bail will stick. I like to slam mine shut with the handle, if you don't keep that area clean and greased, you'll have to close the bail by hand.... salt deposits build up in there quickly because it's not water tight. Thanks again for your support of the channel. I truly and sincerely appreciate it. Tight lines & take care ;)

@@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing yes i cleaned and lubed the bail really good, that worked out great. I got in the habit of closing the bail with my left hand, probs due to poorly maintained reels lol. Thank you again for this channel

Hi Heath, Good educational video. Too many fishermen don't take the time to maintain their reels and rods. I rinse my rod and reel in warm water, in the shower when I'm done fishing. A simple trick; I put a drop of WD-40 on my bail hinges and the bail line roller before I go fishing. Q-Tips and an old tooth brush are good cleaning tools for reels and guns. Thanks, Mickey

how do you fix the clicker/spring for the drag? One time a boat came by and took all the line out of the reel, after that the drag dont make the sound anymore. thanks!
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks a million for watching and asking a great question. So, I've had this happen to other reels before, but not the Spinfisher. The problem definitely lies somewhere on the removable spool, which houses the spring, the dog and drag plate that allows line to be taken off the reel without the internal gears going in reverse. I'll have to take mine apart and reverse engineer the problem you're having and get back to you on how to fix it. I'm pretty sure the dog just got flipped when you got spooled. Sorry I couldn't be more help. When I figure it out I'll get back to. If you want, email me at southfloridasaltwaterfishing@gmail.com that way I can send you any attachments or schematics Penn may have to help solve your problem. Tight lines & take care ;)

On my 5500 you barley hear the drag. Sometimes if they have too much oil on them it can make drag sound disappear. Try opening it up and cleaning of some gunk from the click mechanism. Hope this is what you were referencing

Hi Sir the Penn reel you have is not the live liner reel & I have the new Penn 6500 VI live liner reel & the bail arm on these reels as the Penn 8500 Live Liner reel what my son has got are designed not to come over after you have opened the bail arm over to do the cast & when you wind the handle the bail arm will not come over as have to bring it over manually & that is a safety Feature as other fishing reels that I had in the past when I had the reel on a surf casting rod & I would open the bail arm to do the big cast & most times that I do the big cast the bloody handle would turn & slam the bail arm over & break the line & I had a 5 oz sinker & 50 lb shock Leader & 15 to 20 lb & I would lose my shock leader my 2 hooks & my 5 oz sinker not Bloody good & with the new Penn 6500 VI Live Liner reel I will not have that problem if happen to do any big casting on the Surf Casting Rod & now I have a 6.20 fiberglass boat with a Yamaha f150 four stroke outboard on the back of the boat & I won't need to do any surf casting but I do cast my line away from the boat & I will definitely will not have to worry about the bail arm coming over & snapping the line & my son when he first brought his Penn 8500 Live Liner reel & he thought it was Faulty as when he flicked the ball arm over to cast his line away from the boat & when he turned the handle the bail arm wouldn't come over & so he took the back to the shop where he brought the reel from & the guy at the counter said to my son it is Designed for the bail arm not to come over & you have to bring the bail arm manually over & that is the safety Feature on these fishing reels & you don't break your line when you are doing very hard casting to get longer distances when you are surf casting of a beach or rocks it is an Excellent Feature & that's another reason why I like the new Penn Live Liner reels & my Penn 760 Live Liner reel now & again my bail arm would come over but not often & I haven't broken my line as I'm not putting a hard casting from the boat but if I happen to put that Penn 760 Live Liner reel onto the Surf Casting Rod & I will most likely snap my line & lose my 2 hooks sinker & 50lb shock leader not nice & one time on the Penn rod & the Penn 760 Live Liner reel I caught a 19 1/2 lb Snapper & it is still a Brilliant reel & had guite a big fight on my hands with that big Snapoer & that Penn 760 Live Liner reel still works well to & have had this Penn 760 Live Liner reel for quite a few years now & still a quite a strong reel & the Live Liner drag system works really well & has the back of the reel has another live liner drag system as well by turning the knob Kind Regards Peter PS & Wishing You Sir All The Best For A Happy New Year For 2023

Why did you use oil on the drag when you wiped it cleanof Grease not oil
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks a million for watching and asking a great question. Personally, I like to grease the inner gears, and use the oil on all the exterior moving parts. Salt builds up and decomposes the grease, where oil acts as a water displacement formula and just naturally wears down and deters the salt. That's why I change that lubrication, from what the factory gives you. Hopes this helps. Thanks again for your support of the channel, I truly appreciate it. Tight lines & take care ;)
