One of the hardest parts of selecting a fishing rod is understanding the difference between power and action and how that helps you make your selection. Pro's Pointer provided courtesy of KFYR TV Bismarck, ND

I just got to say that this is the best power versus action video I've seen on KZfaq. I watched five other videos before this video and each and everyone of them confuse me because the guy would talk about power in action and then throw Comments like "I like a moderate heavy rod as opposed to like a Jig rod" I'm not brand new to bass fishing but I'm brand new to advanced Bass fishing where Rod Weight And length matter. Thank you for making it short and sweet and simple!

I just got interested to start fishing and I’ve been watching countless videos. Kept hearing these light and medium terms. Fast and very fast and I’ve been soooo confused. This video clearly showed what these terms mean and I thank you for it. Still not sure what I want to get but I at least now know what these terms are clearly.

GREAT VIDEO, I GOT A BOTTOM FISHING ROD HANDED DOWN TO ME WITH ATCO ROLLER GUIDES HOWEVER IT SEEMS TO HAVE LOTS OF BEND FROM THE MIDDLE OF THE ROD TO THE TIP, NOT SURE NOW IF IT CAN BE USED TO BOTTOM FISH AS HOOKING THE HOOK MAY BE AN ISSUE. ANY ADVICE?
@JohnnieCandle6 жыл бұрын
Try a no stretch fishing line. Braided line with no stretch will aid with hook sets.

So, I'd like to explain because I have doubts as a new bee. the left shows that 3 rods with the same action that have the same bending points, and their lure weight are also different. So what can say about that? because the power and the lure weight are different. On the right side, it is the same power rod, but Johnnie did not explain too much. SO can anyone help?

Sir i purches uglystick gx2 medium power medium action 7 feet rod for spoon fishing and topwater pencil lure fishing both lures are around 20 gms. Line weight written on rod is 15 lb but i use 40 lb braided line because I target big fish. What is your opinion this rod is good for this purpose or not

can you please recommend me rod for saltwater - gulf sea , we dont have ocean like you i have daiwa primarine 2.7 meter i feel its hard doesnt bend easily and it doesnt cast so far, but it can handle shark i think :D i will use cut fish or calamari , no lure no jigging only real cut fish and others i feel i want rod less than 4m but im scared to buy something that bend so much on 10 cm fish :) but if i take hard one doesnt bend then it will not cast far
@stefanantohe91083 жыл бұрын
can an ultra light rod have fast action and heavy power? or the power is directly linked to the weight of the lure? can I fish an ultra light rod for large fish?
@JohnnieCandle3 жыл бұрын
An Ultra Light Rod is Ultra Light power. Yes they can have a fast action tip.

What rod is best for popping cork ?
@JohnnieCandle Жыл бұрын
When I am guiding for Red Fish in the Gulf of Mexico, I have my clients use a 7' Medium Power Fast Action rod and it seems to work very well. We use rather large popping corks and have no issues.
@lawrencemalki5734 жыл бұрын
Okey so what action and power rod can help me to cast further?
@JohnnieCandle4 жыл бұрын
The power of the rod you will want is dependent on the weight of the lure you will be casting so I cannot determine that for you. Moderate action rods, rods that have more of a parabolic bend. will cast the furthest.
@istaycatchingfish2552 Жыл бұрын
Just when you thought you knew something about fishing someone actually explains shit that matters well I stumbled across this video my fishing predicament I wanna fish larger heavier swimbaits for large mouth bass and maybe pike I currently don't have a dedicated swimbait rod as say a Dobyns 836 which is rated I believe 2-8ozs I do far only fish up to 1.5-2ozs baits at the most I really don't want to use a bait caster rod I'd rather use a spinning gear anyone have a clue what spinning rod I could get that could hold 2-8ozs? If I happen to go with a baitcaster what's a decent size and make to start with I plan on maybe using 20lb floro or braid any advice would be great thanks...
@JohnnieCandle Жыл бұрын
I cannot suggest a specific rod for you, but I can tell you what I would look for. For swim baits, fast to moderate fast action in heavy power. You are talking musky type lures and may want to look at some rods designed specifically for that. Best of luck to you.
@DK772016 жыл бұрын
@ 0:45, the 3 rods on the right side of your video are all with identical power. But shouldn't the the action be extra fast, fast and moderate from top to bottom?
@JohnnieCandle6 жыл бұрын
The more moderate a rod, the further toward the handle the rod bends. The faster a rod, the more towards the tip the rod bends.
@DK772016 жыл бұрын
That's right! You got it backwards in the video. Thanks for an otherwise fantastic video.
@JohnnieCandle6 жыл бұрын
Sorry, but I watched again and I have it correct. Slower taper or more moderate is on the top. Fastest rod is on the bottom.
@zachsousa43956 жыл бұрын
You are correct. The video has it backwards
@kiiroMADE3 жыл бұрын
@@DK77201 I'm no pro what so ever, but it seems from a logical standpoint that it's the reverse order for sure. The most bottom rod seem to start bending earlier than the most top one, making the order said in the video being in reverse order than what's actually the truth..
@DownTheRabbit-Hole6 жыл бұрын
Why do rod manufacturers label with for example, Okuma says ML Action when ML refers to power, medium light power and not “action”. They usually have no action rating as in fast, moderate, slow etc?
@JohnnieCandle6 жыл бұрын
It is very frustrating and something I have personally pointed out many times. You would think that manufacturers would know how to properly describe their own products. Many are coming around. St Croix, Fenwick, G Loomis are some of the better at marking their rods correctly.
@DyingSavior6 жыл бұрын
David M really right that’s why I picked the shimano tiralejo it’s straight to the point and accurate on the rating. 10’6 Medium Moderate action. 1-3’1/2
@DownTheRabbit-Hole6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply Johnnie. Great videos. My snarkiness is directed at manufacturers, not you. Maybe I should write this in Chinese. A few St Croix rods are available at Dick's Sporting Goods if anyone wants to check out the "almost" correct labeling that should be on every rod, from cheap rods to expensive. There is absolutely no reason that a manufacturer can't label like this: 1) The overall or physical weight of the rod, example 1lb 6oz, just like all fly rods have, Freekin put it on a scale OK, and label the weight on the dam rod. Manufacturers, this ain't rocket science, OK! 2) The line weight range, example 12lb-30lb etc. Most manu do this. 3) The lure weight range, example .5 oz - 3oz etc. most manu do this. 4) Separate "ACTION" rating into Extra Fast, Fast, Moderate (not to be confused with Medium Power), and Slow. ACTION rating is different than POWER rating.... OK Manufacturers. 5) A "POWER" rating as in Medium Light( ML), light (L), Medium (M), Heavy (H) or Extra Heavy (EH). 6) The length and pieces... 96-2 = 9'6" 2 pieces. 116-3 = 11'6" 3 pieces etc. or similar. 7) LIne weight if fly rod. 796-2 = 7 weight 9'6" 2 piece rod. 8) Finally label Glass, E-Glass, Graphite, Carbon Hybrid whatever....and Model name and Manu. GET RID OF THE PROPRIETARY STUPID HYROGLYPHICS LABELING THAT EVEN AN EXPERIENCED SALESMAN HAS TO GUESS AT. Example 8472-3-HL-3-222 HEAVY ACTION.... ETC ?? WTH? IF THE ROD SAYS "HEAVY ACTION" AND THAT IS IT...DON'T BUY IT. THIS IS MISLABELING. WHAT THIS ACTUALLY MEANS IS HEAVY POWER WITH NO ACTION RATING. SEND A MESSAGE TO SALESMEN AND MANUFACTURERS!!! THANKS
