A step by step instruction on a simple DIY perfect paternoster rig which is low cost to make and very effective. Its a great rig for targeting a whole range of fish. Flathead Snapper Gummy Sharks and more species. We use them regularly in port Phillip Bay, Western Port but it would work great in any other water system as well.
This 2 bait rig allows you to suspend multiple baits and increase your catch rates. The materials used included
2 x hooks ( circle, long shank, bait keeper, or pre made flasher hooks )
1 x meter of fluorocarbon leader ( 20, 30 or 40 lbs )
1 barrel swivel ( 65 lb breaking strain )
2 x glow lumo beads
Enjoy the vid and do subscribe to the channel. You can follow our fishing adventures by kayak, boat, land & jet ski with lures & bait to catch saltwater, freshwater, and estuary fish species. The channel is fun, relatable, and features world class fishing action and tips.

Watched a few of your videos thank you. I set up this rig today and after several hours only caught two fish at jacobs well qld. Had worm and prawn on the hooks. Got fed up and thought I'll just throw one more in the drink and drift while I gut the whiting I caught. Cast it in put the rod down and turned to the whiting. All of a sudden this noise of commotion I turned back around and my rod was taken! So there is a big fish swimming around jacobs well still attached to my rod lol!

@@fishingmad I have just been tying this rig in 10lb mono and I am finding that the line is snapping at the dropper loops with minimal tension. Is this a rig that should only be used with a heavier leader such as 20lb fluorocarbon?

Alan another great video. I tried earlier making this rig and screwed it up a few times so stepped away for a few hours since I was frustrated haha. Now I've made 6 exactly right and don't need to watch this video now. Thanks mate.

This is well explained rig of ever come across it owes you how long the leader needs to be it also has to tell you how far the hooks that come off need to be and that is what I am inquiring about do you have any more videos explaining that type of details. As I've seen a lot of people showing how to build a rig and all this but I this certain length and there has to be this length they just go his this and you eye bullet.

Hello Allan . U have a twisted paternoster rig On your video thumbnail but your video is a representation of a standard double dropper loop ptnsta rig . U need to do a seperate video showing how to do the twisted ptnsta rig
@mattk9089
@mattk9089 3 жыл бұрын
One trick for putting the twists in the small circle you form is to use a match stick, put it through the circle and twist it around 4 times

Love your work. Quick tip if you have difficulty getting your twisted dropper loop through eye of smaller hook . E.g. whiting, garfish hook .Loop a smaller diameter line through the dropper & use this line as a tow to pull dropper through eye of hook . Did you use "hairy hooks "
@fishingmad
@fishingmad 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Al, that's actually a brilliant idea with the smaller diameter leader through the dropper loop. Yes I can also confirm they are hairy back hooks. I usually buy the 12 packs of hooks in different colours which costs about $7 I think. Cheers

Hey Alan - thanks for all the great content! I was just watching a few of your rig vids - is there a difference between this paternoster and the one you made for whiting? This one seems a bit simpler to make ahead/ change hooks based on conditions but I don't wanna make the wrong one. Land fishing thought we might set up a rod for pinkies just in case we get lucky :) thanks!
@fishingmad
@fishingmad 3 жыл бұрын
Your very welcome. You can certainly use this same rig for whiting and pinkies, I just go smaller on the hook sizes as whiting have small mouths, otherwise it works great. Probably also stronger than the other whiting rig as there isnt any real breaking points with this rig,
@dragginmedown

I just go with the over hand knot for the droppers. Landed an 8kg snapper with one of those knots. Too much stuffing around with the dropper loops your way i reckon. No dis, just what I think. Good video none the less mate
@fishingmad
@fishingmad 3 жыл бұрын
Its a very good point, those droppers are really fiddley. Especially when your on a boat or kayak trying to tie them.

Hi Alan, good instructional video. Do you think longer droppers work as effectively in victorian waters? Just inquiring for options to try. cheers
@fishingmad
@fishingmad 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I think longer droppers will be fine, just not to long. The longer the droppers the more prone to tangling I find they become.

That was very informative. I've never thought of using a paternoster rig for flathead. How would you fish it? Drifting... would it work trolled? Love to hear a bit more. Thank you.
@fishingmad
@fishingmad 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Warren, yeah we use this often for flathead either drifting or anchored up. I've never tried it trolling. This was one of our last sessions using it kzfaq.info/get/bejne/arGXYJegl9Xdg3k.html which you can see is very effective. Cheers

Uni knot to swivel or you can just do a double uni to tie the rig to the main line.

@fishingmad 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris, yes 100% i use this rig in freshwater all the time. It works remarkably well on redfin, trout, yellow belly and cod. If I'm targeting trout and redfin ill generally drop the hook sizes to something smaller like a 6/0 bait keeper. But this rig works great targeting a whole different range of fish species. Thanks
