It’s not too bad as far as keeping them cool, I live in Mississippi and I’ve raised them by the hundreds in my tanks. I’ve raised them in every temp from around 60 to 82 and had them flourish. Get your tanks set up correctly from the start and let nature take its course. They love moss, wood and leaves. Dense floating plants have been one of my secrets but I never really chased PH or temperature. I have naturally really hard water here. You should go for it they are so rewarding in so many ways!

Richard, you did an awesome job with this video. I am retired and want to turn my aquarium hobby into a side gig selling shrimp and dwarf Mexican crayfish to local retailers here in Dallas. You have given me some great ideas for setting up a small breeding operation using simple plastic tubs. This one idea alone will greatly reduce my initial costs for setup. In addition, you answered many of the questions I had regarding water quality management. You made me realize I was initially trying to overengineer the expansion. Keep up the great work.

This video conveniently landed before me at a time where I am ready to take the plunge further with my house plants, aquariums and paludariums. Raising shrimp feels right up my alley and this video has helped to reinforced my decision. Thanks! I have one question, have you ever experimented with other aquatic plants, such as the bottom cover types? If it does not negatively impact the shrimp, some of the grasses seem to spread quickly and would be a great additional sale!
@FishKeepingAnswers
@FishKeepingAnswers 3 ай бұрын
I'm glad I could help! If you are looking for a good plant to grow along with the shrimp for great additional sales, I can't recommend anything more highly than Java Moss. When my wife and I bred shrimp commercially, we also grew Java Moss in the same breeding tubs. It has an almost symboitic relationship with shrimp.

Hi Richard. Thanks for video and info! I said a few weeks ago I had about 30+ baby shrimps from a black female and a blue male. All babies transparent in colour! Anyway the local fish shop has said they will take them off my hands. I want to empty the tank of the young completely and replace with a single colour so any new babies will have a colour to them But what is amazing is that 3 of the babies are berried! All seems so quick! I want to replace with new shrimp right away after a bit of a water change and light clean so my cycle doesn’t crash😜 So I am afraid I can’t wait till March to get my shrimp from you which I had wanted to do! Dubious to go elsewhere to get them online as there seems to be a lot of deaths out there! So hopefully the fish shop will have some in when I go next week to take these youngsters in. I only hope people will take them as they are clear as obviously people like coloured ones better!!! I won’t get paid for them so maybe the shop can give them away free to people who just want a clean-up crew!! I don’t want to start up a business as it sounds like a lot to have to package and post - but I don’t mind just giving excess to the local fish shop 😁😁 Then I have the joy of just watching them. H How is your breeding test batch going!,, All the best - Kay

Hi Richard, I've been recently following your videos and enjoying them quite a lot. Congrats on your very informative and straight to the point approach to your videos. Can I ask you if you run an established business (VAT number, taxes and all that) or do you sell only through personal contacts through your website, EBay, etc? Whatever the case, what would you consider to be the great advantages in each model? Thanks and wish you all the success.
@FishKeepingAnswers
@FishKeepingAnswers Жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for taking the time to comment. We sell through eBay primarily. eBay just makes the whole selling process so simple. We don’t pay VAT as our turnover is no where near the VAT threshold. We do however have to pay tax on the profits we make from selling shrimp. I am currently considering moving everything from eBay to a sales website, but I am not sure there is much to be gained. Hope that helps 👍🏻

So, I can probably answer that one here, but I’ll try and remember for the next video too. Essentially I run a single Eheim air pump which has 2 outlets. Each outlet runs to a four way gang valve, with each gang valve serving 4 airstones (well one technically serves 5 airstones thanks to a small t-piece in one of the pipes) 🦐👍🏻

I love your videos they are straight to the point and very informative. However I've been having lots of difficulty keeping and breeding ghost shrimp I get from the pet store. I set up a tank with gravel and a small sponge filter like you said and put in java moss. However, lots of waste buildup happens in gravel. Do you ever clean the gravel? My shrimp die and I can't figure out why. It tends to happen after like a 10-20% water change. The water is dechlorinated and left in the same room for at least a day to match temperature before it gets added to the tank. I'd rather top off water but the water gets dirty and debris can be seen floating. I want to give it more light for my floating plants to stop turning yellow/pale but algae immediately takes over the tank and suffocates the little java moss that I have. Lastly my shrimp tend to develop small white dots at the head or all over the body. Please help 🙏
@FishKeepingAnswers
@FishKeepingAnswers 11 ай бұрын
Hi. First question, what else do you have in the tank besides the ghost shrimp?
@heartsonchannel
@heartsonchannel 11 ай бұрын
@FishKeepingAnswers Thanks for replying! All I have in the setup: washed pea gravel from home depot, salvinia minima that's pale and barely alive, small amzom sponge filter, a catappa leaf, tiny bit of java moss that was glued to a rock (barely grew at all and now covered in green or blue-green algae). BTW the tap water we have here seems to have pretty high KH, GH, and pH.
@FishKeepingAnswers
@FishKeepingAnswers 11 ай бұрын
Ok. My next thought is could you be over feeding? If you just have Ghost Shrimp how is the water getting dirt with lots of debris? Do you own a gravel vac?
@heartsonchannel
@heartsonchannel 11 ай бұрын
@FishKeepingAnswers I did notice overfeeding and cut it down 2 weeks ago. I feed sunken tropical flakes and shrimp pellets. I thought they would eat the leftover flakes but they only eat fresh ones even when hungry. The only pregnant shrimp I had died today and is what prompted me to finally ask you for help 🥲. I don't have a gravel vac because I want to set it up and leave it if possible. Also, tank is small anyways so I don't like the idea of sucking so much water out. I think you've mentioned shrimp like stability. Due to those reasons I'd prefer to keep things easy. If that's possible. 🤷‍♂️

Do you let your tubs cycle first or do you daily dose with prime until cycled? Also how do you safely remove all of your baby shrimp without hurting them?
@FishKeepingAnswers
@FishKeepingAnswers Жыл бұрын
I just let the tubs run for a week or two with a small clump of Java Moss. Transferring the moss from a cycled tank brings in sufficient bacteria to kick start the cycle. I leave the baby shrimp in the tub until they are large enough to sell.

With all due respect to be selling 1000 cherry, 400 yellow, and 150 blues, you must have more than 6 x 25ltr tubs. I'm happy your wife sells with you. Mine, on the other hand, well, she says my amanos remind her of spiders so. I feel this video was more of a repeat to the other 300 videos I've watched, but you did offer an insight into something I didn't expect. I'm also from the UK. Wales to be exact. @FishKeepingAnswers I suspect that sand substrate will not have big enough holes in between particles for foodwaste to collect and rot. Goodmorning sir Richard. I've been keeping my yellow golden back shrimps for a few weeks now, and they seem to be not breeding at all. Maybe it is because I'm just hasty and I should give them some more time? How long is the process between the maturation of shrimps to be capable of breeding and how long does it take for the eggs to hatch? Thank you so much! 😊 Your e-book guide has been a very good source of info for my shrimpkeeping.

Hello. Sorry to hear you have not seen any babies yet. Shrimp can usually breed at about 4 to 6 months old. It takes around 30 days for the eggs to mature and hatch. The best I can recommend (unless you can find a breeder who will hand select one sex or the other for you) is to buy some shrimp and put them into a spare tank.
